In this chapter, we are going to look at two major ways humans change the face of the Earth: Mining and Urbanization. Whether we are digging deep into the ground to find the minerals for your smartphone or paving over a forest to build a new shopping mall, these activities have a massive impact on the environment. Don't worry if these terms sound a bit "industrial"—we'll break them down step-by-step!

Topic 5.9: Impacts of Mining

Mining is how we obtain the raw materials needed for modern life, like coal for electricity or lithium for batteries. However, getting these materials out of the ground isn't exactly "neat and tidy."

1. Surface vs. Subsurface Mining

There are two main ways to mine, and each has its own set of problems:

  • Surface Mining: This involves removing the "overburden" (the soil and rock on top of a mineral deposit) to get to the goods. It’s like peeling an orange to get to the fruit. While it's cheaper for companies, it completely destroys the local ecosystem and habitat.
  • Subsurface Mining: This involves digging deep tunnels underground. It’s less disruptive to the surface than a giant open pit, but it is much more dangerous for workers and can lead to subsidence (the ground above the mine sinking or collapsing).

2. Environmental Consequences

Mining doesn't just change the way the land looks; it changes the chemistry of the environment. Here is what you need to know for the exam:

Habitat Destruction and Fragmentation: To build a mine, you have to clear trees and move earth. This destroys the homes of animals and breaks up large habitats into small, isolated "islands," making it hard for species to find food or mates.

Dust and Air Pollution: Mining operations involve heavy machinery and blasting, which kick up huge amounts of particulate matter. This can lower air quality and cause respiratory issues for nearby communities.

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD): This is a "must-know" concept! When rocks containing sulfur are exposed to air and water during mining, they form sulfuric acid. This acid runs off into nearby streams, lowering the \( pH \) of the water. This can kill aquatic life and leach heavy metals like mercury or arsenic into the drinking water.

3. The "Leftovers": Tailings and Slag

After the desired mineral is extracted, what's left?
Tailings: These are the waste ores—the "scraps" left behind after the valuable minerals are removed. They are often stored in giant piles or ponds and can leak toxins into the soil.
Slag: This is the stony waste matter separated from metals during the smelting (melting) process.

Because mining is so destructive, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) is often used to help fund the cleanup of hazardous abandoned mine sites. Additionally, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) helps manage the disposal of solid waste created during the process.


Topic 5.10: Impacts of Urbanization

Urbanization is the shift of human populations from rural (countryside) areas to urban (city) areas. As more people move to cities, we "pave over" nature to build roads, houses, and businesses.

1. The "Concrete Jungle" Effect

When we build cities, we replace soil and plants with impermeable surfaces like asphalt, concrete, and roofing. These materials do not allow water to soak into the ground. This leads to several problems:

  • Increased Runoff: Instead of soaking into the ground to recharge aquifers (underground water), rainwater hits the pavement and rushes into storm drains. This water picks up oil, trash, and chemicals along the way, dumping them into local rivers. (We will cover how to reduce this in Topic 5.13!)
  • Flooding: Because the water has nowhere to go, urban areas are much more prone to flash flooding than natural forests or grasslands.

2. The Urban Heat Island Effect

Have you ever noticed that a parking lot feels much hotter than a park? This is the Urban Heat Island Effect.
Cities are significantly warmer than the surrounding rural areas because:
1. Dark surfaces (like asphalt) absorb more solar radiation.
2. There are fewer trees to provide shade and cool the air through evapotranspiration.
3. Waste heat from cars, air conditioners, and factories adds to the temperature.

3. Atmospheric and Water Impacts

Carbon Dioxide (\( CO_2 \)): Urbanization usually leads to an increase in burning fossil fuels for transportation and heating, which increases the amount of \( CO_2 \) in the atmosphere, contributing to the Greenhouse Effect (which we will see again in Unit 9).

Saltwater Intrusion: As cities near the coast pump out too much fresh groundwater for their large populations, the pressure drops, allowing salty ocean water to seep into the freshwater wells. This ruins the drinking water supply.
