Welcome to Theme 3: My Studies (我的学习)
Welcome to your study guide for Topic 1: My studies (我的学习 - wǒ de xuéxí), part of Theme 3: Current and future study and employment in your AQA GCSE Chinese (Mandarin) 8673 course. Talking about your school life, the subjects you study, your teachers, and your opinions on homework is one of the most common topics across all four exam papers (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing).
Don't worry if Mandarin sentence patterns seem tricky at first! Chinese grammar is very logical once you learn the building blocks. In this guide, we will break down the essential vocabulary, master the sentence patterns step-by-step, and highlight common exam traps so you can score top marks with confidence.
Exam Snapshot:
• Paper 1 (Listening): 25% — Questions in English, testing understanding of school subjects, timetables, and teacher descriptions.
• Paper 2 (Speaking): 25% — Role-play (15 marks), Photo card (15 marks), and General conversation (30 marks). Theme 3 is a core feature in speaking tasks.
• Paper 3 (Reading): 25% — Comprehension questions in English and a translation from Chinese into English.
• Paper 4 (Writing): 25% — Structured writing, extended writing, and translation into Chinese characters (Foundation: 50 marks; Higher: 60 marks).
1. Essential Topic Vocabulary
Core School & Study Terms
Every student needs these foundation words at their fingertips:
• 老师 (lǎoshī) — Teacher
• 学生 (xuésheng) — Student
• 科目 (kēmù) — Subject
• 校长 (xiàozhǎng) — Headteacher / Principal
• 作业 (zuòyè) — Homework
• 课 (kè) — Lesson / class
• 聪明 (cōngming) — Clever / intelligent
• 教 (jiāo) — To teach
• 学 (xué) — To learn / study
School Subjects (Foundation & Higher)
Notice how many subject names end in 文 (wén, language/culture) or 学 (xué, study of):
Higher Tier Specific Subjects
If you are sitting the Higher Tier paper, you must also master these specific subject terms:
• 物理 (wùlǐ) — Physics
• 化学 (huàxué) — Chemistry
• 生物 (shēngwù) — Biology
• 经济 (jīngjì) — Economics
Key Takeaway: Grouping words by their shared character (such as 学 in 数学, 科学, 化学) makes memorising subject vocabulary much easier and faster!
2. Sentence Builders & Key Grammar Structures
A. Expressing Likes, Dislikes, and Interests
To reach higher grades in speaking and writing, move beyond basic phrases like 我喜欢 (I like) by using more varied structures:
• Favourite subject: 我最喜欢 + [Subject]
Example: 我最喜欢中文。 (Wǒ zuì xǐhuan zhōngwén. — My favourite subject is Chinese.)
• Being interested in a subject: 我对 + [Subject] + 有兴趣 / 感兴趣
Example: 我对历史很感兴趣。 (Wǒ duì lìshǐ hěn gǎn xìngqù. — I am very interested in history.)
B. Giving Reasons with 因为... 所以... (Because... Therefore...)
AQA examiners award marks for complex sentences linked with conjunctions. Always pair 因为 (yīnwèi, because) with 所以 (suǒyǐ, so/therefore):
• Formula: 因为 + Reason, 所以 + Result
Example: 因为老师很友好,所以我觉得数学很有意思。
(Yīnwèi lǎoshī hěn yǒuhǎo, suǒyǐ wǒ juéde shùxué hěn yǒu yìsi. — Because the teacher is very friendly, I think maths is very interesting.)
C. Comparing Subjects: The 比 (bǐ) and 和...一样 Structures
Comparatives are essential for achieving Grade 5 and above. Follow these exact mathematical formulas:
• Comparing two subjects (A is more [adjective] than B):
Formula: A + 比 + B + Adjective
Example: 中文比历史难。 (Zhōngwén bǐ lìshǐ nán. — Chinese is more difficult than history.)
Tip: If you want to say "even more", use 更 (gèng): 中文比历史更有意思。 (Chinese is even more interesting than history.)
• Stating equality (A is as [adjective] as B):
Formula: A + 和 / 跟 + B + 一样 (+ Adjective)
Example: 英语和数学一样重要。 (Yīngyǔ hé shùxué yīyàng zhòngyào. — English is as important as maths.)
D. Describing Difficulty, Workload, and Teachers
Use these rich evaluative expressions in your written descriptions and speaking answers:
• 有意思 / 有趣 (yǒu yìsi / yǒuqù) — Interesting / fun
• 没意思 / 无聊 (méi yìsi / wúliáo) — Boring / uninteresting
• 难 (nán) — Difficult vs 容易 (róngyì) — Easy
• 作业太多 / 太少 (zuòyè tài duō / tài shǎo) — Too much / too little homework
• 老师教得好 (lǎoshī jiāo de hǎo) — The teacher teaches well
• 老师很严格 (lǎoshī hěn yángé) — The teacher is very strict
E. Timetables, Routine, and Measure Words
When describing your school schedule, use the correct time-first order and measure words:
• Measure words:
- Use 节 (jié) for individual lesson periods: 两节课 (two lessons).
- Use 门 (mén) for broad school subjects: 五门科目 (five subjects).
• Schedule Formula: [Time / Day] + 有 + [Number] + 节 + [Subject] + 课
Example: 星期一上午我有两节科学课。
(Xīngqīyī shàngwǔ wǒ yǒu liǎng jié kēxué kè. — On Monday morning I have two science lessons.)
Key Takeaway: Always follow standard word order formulas for comparatives (A 比 B + Adj) and time/schedule statements (Time + Verb + Object) to ensure full accuracy marks.
3. Common Pitfalls & Examiner Warnings
AQA examiner reports consistently point out several recurring errors under the "My studies" topic. Learn these rules to protect your marks:
Trap 1: Confusing 教 (jiāo, to teach) and 学 (xué, to learn)
• Incorrect: *我教中文 (when you mean "I learn Chinese").
• Correct: 我学中文。 (I learn Chinese.)
• Incorrect: *老师学我。
• Correct: 老师教我。 (The teacher teaches me.)
Trap 2: Adding 是 (shì) Before Adjectives
In English we say "Maths is difficult", but in Mandarin, standard adjectives act directly as predicates with degree adverbs like 很 (hěn) or 非常 (fēicháng).
• Incorrect: *数学是很难。
• Correct: 数学很难。 or 数学非常难。
Trap 3: Incorrect Word Order for Time and Place
Never put time phrases or place phrases at the very end of your sentence like in English.
• Incorrect: *我学中文在上午。
• Correct: 我上午学中文。 (Subject + Time + Verb + Object) or 在学校我学中文。 (Place + Subject + Verb + Object).
Trap 4: Putting 很 (hěn) inside 比 (bǐ) Sentences
In a comparative sentence with 比, you must NOT include degree adverbs like 很 or 非常.
• Incorrect: *历史比地理很有意思。
• Correct: 历史比地理有意思。 (History is more interesting than geography.)
• Alternative: 历史比地理更有意思。 (History is even more interesting than geography.)
Trap 5: Over-memorised General Conversation Answers in Speaking (Paper 2)
Examiners report that candidates lose marks under "Spontaneity and Fluency" when they simply recite rigid, pre-learnt paragraphs without directly answering the examiner's actual question. Always listen carefully to the question word (e.g., 为什么, 什么, 谁) and adapt your response naturally.
4. Model Sentences for Exam Practice
Study these high-scoring model sentences across Foundation and Higher tiers:

(Wǒ xǐhuan tǐyù, yīnwèi tǐyù kè hěn yǒuqù. — I like PE because PE lessons are very fun.)
• 我的英语老师很聪明,也很有友好。
(Wǒ de yīngyǔ lǎoshī hěn cōngming, yě hěn yǒuhǎo. — My English teacher is clever and also very friendly.)
Higher Level Model Sentences:

(Suīrán wùlǐ bǐ huàxué nán, dànshì wùlǐ lǎoshī jiāo de fēicháng hǎo. — Although physics is more difficult than chemistry, the physics teacher teaches extremely well.)
• 我对经济和生物都很感兴趣,作业也不太多。
(Wǒ duì jīngjì hé shēngwù dōu hěn gǎn xìngqù, zuòyè yě bù tài duō. — I am very interested in both economics and biology, and the homework is not too much either.)
• 星期二下午我有两节艺术课,我觉得艺术和音乐一样重要。
(Xīngqī'èr xiàwǔ wǒ yǒu liǎng jié yìshù kè, wǒ juéde yìshù hé yīnyuè yīyàng zhòngyào. — On Tuesday afternoon I have two art lessons; I think art is as important as music.)
