Mastering Prepositions (Co-verbs) and Location in Mandarin

Welcome to one of the most rewarding parts of AQA GCSE Chinese grammar! If you have ever wanted to tell someone where you are, how you travel, who you are buying a gift for, or how far your house is from school, this chapter is your ultimate toolkit.

In English, we call words like "at", "from", "to", "with", and "for" prepositions. In Chinese grammar, they are often called co-verbs (介词, jiècí) because they act like helper verbs that work alongside the main action verb. Once you master their fixed sentence patterns, you will instantly unlock the ability to write longer, higher-scoring sentences in all four GCSE papers (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing).

Note for exams: Both Simplified characters (e.g. 从, 给, 离) and Traditional characters (e.g. 從, 給, 離) are fully accepted in your GCSE assessments.

1. The Golden Rule of Co-verb Word Order

In English, we usually put details like location or tools at the very end of a sentence:
• English: "I read books in the library."
• English: "I eat noodles with chopsticks."

In Mandarin, the rule is the exact opposite! Think of it as the "Preparation Before Action" rule: you must set the scene (where, with what, or by what transport) before you perform the main action.

The Core Formula:
\(\text{Subject} + [\text{Co-verb} + \text{Noun Phrase}] + \text{Main Verb} + \text{Object}\)

---

2. The Essential Co-verbs (Prepositions)

A. 在 (zài) — "At / In / On" (Locative Co-verb)

Use to show the location where an action happens.

Formula:
\(\text{Subject} + \text{在} + \text{Place} + \text{Action Verb} + \text{Object}\)

Examples:
• 我图书馆看书。 (Wǒ zài túshūguǎn kàn shū. — I read books in the library.)
• 弟弟家做作业。 (Dìdi zài jiā zuò zuòyè. — Younger brother does homework at home.)

B. 从 / 從 (cóng) and 到 (dào) — "From ... To ..." (Origin & Destination)

Use for starting points (origin) and for ending points (destination). You can use them individually or pair them together to talk about both space (places) and time.

Formula (Starting Point Only):
\(\text{Subject} + \text{从} + \text{Point A} + \text{Verb}\)
• 我英国来。 (Wǒ cóng Yīngguó lái. — I come from the UK.)

Formula (From Point A to Point B):
\(\text{从} + \text{Point A} + \text{到} + \text{Point B}\)
星期一星期五 (Cóng xīngqīyī dào xīngqīwǔ — From Monday to Friday)
学校我家 (Cóng xuéxiào dào wǒ jiā — From school to my home)

C. 用 (yòng) — "With / Using" (Instrumental Co-verb)

Use when you are using an instrument, tool, or language to complete an action.

Formula:
\(\text{Subject} + \text{用} + \text{Tool/Instrument} + \text{Verb} + \text{Object}\)

Examples:
• 我筷子吃饭。 (Wǒ yòng kuàizi chī fàn. — I eat with chopsticks.)
• 我们中文写信。 (Wǒmen yòng Zhōngwén xiě xìn. — We write letters in Chinese.)

D. 坐 (zuò) — "By / Taking [Transport]" (Transport Co-verb)

Literally meaning "to sit", is used as a co-verb to express travelling by a seated mode of transport (train, bus, plane, car, etc.).

Formula:
\(\text{Subject} + \text{坐} + \text{Vehicle} + \text{Directional Verb (去/来)} + \text{Destination}\)

Examples:
• 我们火车去北京。 (Wǒmen zuò huǒchē qù Běijīng. — We go to Beijing by train.)
• 妈妈公共汽车去工作。 (Māma zuò gōnggòng qìchē qù gōngzuò. — Mum takes the bus to go to work.)

E. 给 / 給 (gěi) — "To / For" (Benefactive / Dative Co-verb — Higher Tier)

Use when an action is directed towards or done for the benefit of someone else.

Formula:
\(\text{Subject} + \text{给} + \text{Recipient} + \text{Verb} + (\text{Object})\)

Examples:
• 爸爸我打电话。 (Bàba gěi wǒ dǎ diànhuà. — Dad makes a phone call to me / calls me.)
• 妈妈我买了一件衣服。 (Māma gěi wǒ mǎi le yí jiàn yīfu. — Mum bought a piece of clothing for me.)

Key Takeaway for Co-verbs: Always ask yourself: "What is the main action?" Place the co-verb phrase (who with, where at, how by) directly in front of that main action!

3. Expressing Location and Position

A. Core Position Words (Localisers / 方位词)

To state exactly where something is in relation to an object, attach these direction words right after the noun:

(shàng) / 上面 (shàngmian) — on / above
(xià) / 下面 (xiàmian) — under / below
左边 (zuǒbian) — left side
右边 (yòubian) — right side
前面 (qiánmian) — in front
后面 (hòumian) — behind
里边 / 内 (lǐbian / nèi) — inside
外边 (wàibian) — outside
旁边 (pángbiān) — next to / beside
对面 (duìmiàn) — opposite

B. Describing Location Using 在 (zài)

When stating where a specific person or item is located, use as the main verb.

Formula:
\(\text{Subject/Entity} + \text{在} + \text{Reference Point} + \text{Position Word}\)

Examples:
• 猫桌子上面。 (Māo zài zhuōzi shàngmian. — The cat is on top of the table.)
• 老师教室里边。 (Lǎoshī zài jiàoshì lǐbian. — The teacher is inside the classroom.)
• 电影院银行对面。 (Diànyǐngyuàn zài yínháng duìmiàn. — The cinema is opposite the bank.)

C. Positional Phrases with 的 (de)

You can use to turn a location into a descriptive modifier for another noun, or to describe what is located in a certain direction.

Formula 1: Defining an area
\(\text{Reference Noun} + \text{的} + \text{Position Word} + \text{有 / 是} + \text{Object}\)
• 学校的旁边有一家书店。 (Xuéxiào de pángbiān yǒu yì jiā shūdiàn. — Beside the school there is a bookstore.)

Formula 2: Describing a specific item/person
\(\text{Position Word} + \text{的} + \text{Noun}\)
左边的人是我的老师。 (Zuǒbian de rén shì wǒ de lǎoshī. — The person on the left is my teacher.)

D. Giving Definitive Location Using 是 (shì)

When identifying what exclusively occupies or defines a specific space, use instead of 有.

Formula:
\(\text{Place / Position Phrase} + \text{是} + \text{Specific Noun}\)

Example:
• 图书馆前面运动场。 (Túshūguǎn qiánmian shì yùndòngchǎng. — In front of the library is the sports ground.)

Quick Comparison: 在 vs. 有 vs. 是

Don't worry if these three feel similar at first! Here is a simple way to remember their different jobs:
1. 在 (Where is it?): Starts with the item \(\implies\) 书桌子上 (The book is on the table.)
2. 有 (What exists there?): Starts with the place \(\implies\) 桌子上有一本书 (There is a book on the table.)
3. 是 (What defines that place?): Starts with the place \(\implies\) 图书馆对面是公园 (Opposite the library is the park.)

E. Stating Distance Using 离 / 離 (lí) — Higher Tier

To state the distance or proximity between two fixed locations, Mandarin uses the special structure word (literally "distanced from").

Formula:
\(\text{Place A} + \text{离} + \text{Place B} + \begin{cases} \text{很近} & (\text{very close}) \\ \text{很远} & (\text{very far}) \\ \text{不远} & (\text{not far}) \\ \text{Specific Distance (e.g. 五公里)} & \end{cases}\)

Examples:
• 我家学校很近。 (Wǒ jiā lí xuéxiào hěn jìn. — My home is very close to school.)
• 商店这里不远。 (Shāngdiàn lí zhèlǐ bù yuǎn. — The shop is not far from here.)
• 机场市中心有二十公里。 (Jīchǎng lí shì zhōngxīn yǒu èrshí gōnglǐ. — The airport is 20 kilometres away from the city centre.)

Asking "How far?":
\(\text{Place A} + \text{离} + \text{Place B} + \text{多远?}\)
• 你家学校多远? (Nǐ jiā lí xuéxiào duō yuǎn? — How far is your home from school?)

4. Common Pitfalls and Examiner Traps to Avoid

Examiner reports frequently highlight a few classic mistakes. Keep an eye out for these in your exam prep:

Trap 1: English Word Order Transfer
Incorrect: *我学中文在学校。 (Translating directly from "I study Chinese at school")
Correct: 我在学校学中文。 (Put the location phrase \(\text{在学校}\) before the verb \(\text{学}\).)

Trap 2: Using 从 instead of 离 for Static Distance
Incorrect: *我家从学校很远。
Correct: 我家离学校很远。
Memory tip: is for motion or starting journeys (e.g. "I walk from home"), while is strictly for measuring static distance between two spots!

Trap 3: Adding Extra Unnecessary Verbs with 坐
Incorrect: *我去坐火车去北京。
Correct: 我们坐火车去北京。 (The phrase \(\text{坐火车}\) is already your helper phrase explaining how you go.)

Trap 4: Forgetting the Position Word (Localiser)
Incorrect: *猫在桌子。
Correct: 猫在桌子上。 (In Chinese, ordinary objects need an exact direction word like 上, 下, or 里.)
