The Core Issue: The Problem of Talking About God

Traditional theism defines God as infinite, timeless, incorporeal (without a physical body), and transcendent (beyond our physical universe). However, human language was invented to describe finite, physical objects within space and time (like chairs, trees, or weather).
This creates a massive philosophical dilemma: How can limited human words meaningfully describe an unlimited God?

1. Logical Positivism and the Verification Principle

In the 1920s and 1930s, a group of philosophers known as the Vienna Circle developed Logical Positivism. They wanted to rid philosophy of confusing metaphysical speculation and establish a strict standard for what makes a statement meaningful.

A.J. Ayer and the Verification Principle:
British philosopher A.J. Ayer popularized Logical Positivism in the English-speaking world. Ayer argued that a proposition is only cognitively meaningful (meaning it conveys a factual claim that can be true or false) if it meets one of two criteria:
• Analytic statements (Tautologies): Statements that are true by definition or logic alone (e.g., "All bachelors are unmarried men" or \(2 + 2 = 4\)).
• Synthetic statements (Empirically verifiable): Statements about the world that can be tested, confirmed, or shown to be probable through sensory observation (e.g., "Water boils at \(100^\circ\text{C}\) at sea level").

Strong vs. Weak Verification:
Ayer realized that defining verification was tricky, so he made an essential distinction:
• Strong Verification: A statement is meaningful only if its truth can be conclusively, conclusively proven by direct empirical observation right now. Philosopher Karl Popper suggested that science progresses not by trying to verify hypotheses, but by trying to falsify them (testing what evidence would prove them wrong). This led to the famous 1955 "University Debate" on religious language involving Antony Flew, R.M. Hare, and Basil Mitchell.

Antony Flew and the Parable of the Invisible Gardener

Antony Flew applied the Falsification Principle to religious claims. Flew argued that for any assertion to mean anything, the speaker must be able to specify what empirical state of affairs would disprove it. If a statement cannot be disproved by any conceivable evidence, it asserts nothing about reality.

Two explorers discover a clearing in the jungle filled with flowers and weeds.
Explorer A believes: "There must be a gardener who tends this plot."
Explorer B doubts this: "There is no gardener."

Yet Explorer A continues to insist: "There is a gardener, but he is invisible, intangible, silent, and leaves no scent!"
Explorer B asks: "How does an invisible, intangible, eternally elusive gardener differ from an imaginary gardener or no gardener at all?"

Flew’s Key Phrase:
Flew argued that religious believers constantly qualify their claims whenever confronted with contradictory evidence (e.g., when innocent children suffer, believers say "God's love is mysterious"). Flew stated that religious assertions suffer a "death by a thousand qualifications"—they are whittled away until they assert nothing.

R.M. Hare and "Bliks"

R.M. Hare responded to Flew by arguing that Flew fundamentally misunderstood the nature of religious language. Religious language is not an empirical hypothesis waiting to be tested; it is a blik—an unprovable, unfalsifiable, fundamental worldview or lens through which an individual interprets all experience.

Hare’s Parable of the Paranoid Student:
A university student is convinced that all university dons (professors) want to murder him. His friends introduce him to the kindest, gentlest dons, who greet him warmly. Afterwards, the student says: "See how cunning they are? They were only pretending to be nice so they can catch me off guard and kill me!"

Explanation:
No amount of positive behavior will ever convince the student otherwise because his paranoid assumption is his "blik." Hare argues that everyone has bliks (both believers and atheists). Our bliks determine how we live, feel, and make choices, meaning they are deeply meaningful even if they cannot be falsified.

Basil Mitchell and the Resistance Leader (The Stranger)

Basil Mitchell disagreed with both Flew and Hare. He argued that religious believers are not blind to counter-evidence (contra Flew), nor are they irrational or deluded (contra Hare). Believers know that evil and suffering count against God's love, but they maintain trust because of a prior relationship of faith.

Mitchell’s Parable:
In a war-torn country occupied by an enemy, a member of the partisan resistance meets an enigmatic Stranger. They spend a night talking, and the Stranger convinces the partisan to trust him completely as the supreme leader of the underground resistance.
Later, the partisan sees the Stranger acting ambivalently: sometimes helping the resistance, but at other times seen wearing enemy uniform and handing partisans over to the occupying forces.
The partisan's friends say the Stranger is a traitor, but the partisan maintains his trust, saying: "He has his reasons; he is working undercover."

Mitchell’s Conclusion:
The partisan's belief is not a baseless hypothesis, nor is it a mere "blik." It is an act of trust rooted in a genuine encounter. Mitchell categorizes religious statements not as provisional scientific hypotheses, but as significant articles of faith. The believer acknowledges the reality of pain and evil, but chooses to trust God through the trial.

1. Thomas Aquinas: The Doctrine of Analogy

Medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas rejected two extreme views of religious language:
• Univocal Language: Using words in the exact same sense for God and humans (e.g., "God is wise" meaning the exact same kind of brain-based wisdom as a human). Aquinas said this is false because God is transcendent and infinite; it reduces God to the level of a creature.
• Equivocal Language: Using words in a completely different sense (e.g., the word "bat" meaning a flying mammal versus a wooden sports stick). Aquinas said if language about God is equivocal, we can know nothing about Him, leading to total agnosticism.

Aquinas proposed a middle path: Analogical Language. Because God created the world, there is a causal relationship between God and His creation. We can speak meaningfully about God using two forms of analogy:

1. Analogy of Attribution:
Attributes or qualities belong primarily to God and are reflected secondarily in His creation.
Aquinas's Example: A physician examines a bull's urine and pronounces the bull "healthy." The urine itself does not possess organic health in the same way the living animal does, but the urine is an indicator and product of the bull's health.
Application: When we say "God is good," God is the primary source of goodness. Human goodness is a genuine, derived reflection of divine goodness.

2. Analogy of Proportion:
Qualities are understood in proportion to the nature of the being that possesses them.
Everyday Analogy: A "clever dog" can fetch a stick or open a gate; a "clever human" can solve differential calculus. The word "clever" is used in proportion to the nature of the dog or the human.
Application: When we say "God is loving," we mean God possesses love in proportion to His infinite, divine nature, just as humans possess love in proportion to our finite, human nature.

2. Paul Tillich: Religious Language as Symbol

Existentialist theologian Paul Tillich argued that religious language is non-literal and fundamentally symbolic. For Tillich, God is not a "being" among other beings, but "Being-itself" (the Ground of all Being).

Signs vs. Symbols:
• A Sign: Arbitrarily points to something else without sharing in its reality (e.g., a green traffic light means "go," but the green light has no intrinsic connection to driving).
• A Symbol: Participates in the reality and power of that to which it points (e.g., a national flag is not just a piece of dyed fabric; it embodies national identity, history, and loyalty; people salute it and will fight for it).

Features of Symbols:
1. They open up levels of reality that are otherwise closed to us (just like visual art or music unlocks hidden emotional depth).
2. They unlock internal dimensions of the human soul corresponding to those realities.
3. They cannot be produced intentionally; they grow out of the collective unconscious and can "die" when they lose cultural relevance.
Key Point: Religious words like "Creator," "Father," or "Lord" are symbolic expressions that participate in the ultimate reality of God.

3. Ludwig Wittgenstein: Language Games and "Forms of Life"

In his later work (Philosophical Investigations), Ludwig Wittgenstein completely moved away from verificationism. He argued that the meaning of a word is not found in an external object it points to, but in how it is used in a particular social context.

The Language Game Concept:
Wittgenstein compared language to a collection of different games (e.g., chess, football, tennis). Each game has its own internal rules, vocabulary, and standards of success.
In chess, the statement "The bishop moves diagonally" makes perfect sense.
If a football referee penalizes a player because the bishop moved diagonally, it makes no sense—because that rule belongs to a different game!

Forms of Life:
Language games are rooted in "forms of life" (shared human cultural practices, traditions, and communities).
• Science is one language game: its rules revolve around empirical measurement, physical cause-and-effect, and testable hypotheses.
• Religion is a distinct language game: its rules revolve around worship, commitment, prayer, and ethical living.
Wittgenstein's Conclusion: It is a fundamental philosophical mistake for scientists (like Logical Positivists) to judge the religious language game using the rules of the scientific language game. Religious statements are fully meaningful to the community participating in that religious form of life.
