A. Age Structure

We usually divide the population into three groups:
1. Young dependents (ages 0–14).
2. Economically active or "Working population" (ages 15–64).

- Stage 2 (Early Expanding): Death rates drop (better food/medicine), but birth rates stay high. Population grows rapidly. Shape: Classic wide-based pyramid.
- Stage 3 (Late Expanding): Birth rates start to fall (contraception, education). Population growth slows down. Shape: Sides become straighter.
- Stage 4 (Low Fluctuating): Low birth and death rates. Population is high and stable. Shape: "Beehive" or column shape.

- Economic Impacts: High cost of pensions; smaller workforce means lower tax revenue; the "grey economy" (growth in products for older people).
- Potential Benefit: Older people often volunteer or provide childcare for grandchildren, supporting the economy indirectly.

5. Government Management of Natural Increase

Governments often try to manage their population through Population Policies. You need to know two contrasting examples.

Pro-natalist Policies (Encouraging Births)

Usually found in countries with an ageing population or low birth rates (e.g., France, Singapore, or Japan).
- Strategies: Subsidized childcare, long paid parental leave, "baby bonuses" (cash payments), and tax breaks for larger families.
- Success: Generally difficult to achieve; it is very expensive and birth rates often remain low due to high living costs.

Anti-natalist Policies (Discouraging Births)

Found in countries where population growth is outstripping resources.

- Success: Can be very effective at lowering birth rates but can lead to gender imbalances (preference for boys) and a rapidly ageing population in the future.
