What Drives Us? The Different Faces of Motivation
To understand how motivation shapes behaviour, we first need to distinguish between where that "push" comes from. Motivation isn't a single "thing"—it's a complex interaction of needs and rewards.
1. Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation
This is the most common way psychologists categorise motivation:
- Intrinsic Motivation: This comes from within. You do something because it is naturally satisfying, interesting, or fun. Example: Playing a musical instrument because you love the sound and the challenge.
