Six More Particles, Infinite New Sentences
With は, が and を you can say who does what. This chapter adds the particles for where, when, with whom, whose, and "also" — the tags that turn skeleton sentences into real life: "I go to school at 8 by train with my friend." Six particles: に, で, へ, と, も, の. Let's go!
1. に — The Pinpoint Particle
に (ni) is a pin on the map (or the clock): it marks a precise point — a destination, a location of existence, a time, or a receiver.
Job 1: Destination — "to"
学校に行きます。(Gakkō ni ikimasu.) — I go to school.
うちに帰ります。(Uchi ni kaerimasu.) — I go home.
日本に来ました。(Nihon ni kimashita.) — I came to Japan.
Job 2: Location of existence — "in/at" (with あります・います)
かぎは机の上にあります。(Kagi wa tsukue no ue ni arimasu.) — The key is on the desk.
ねこは部屋の中にいます。(Neko wa heya no naka ni imasu.) — The cat is in the room.
Job 3: Specific time — "at/on"
7時に起きます。(Shichiji ni okimasu.) — I get up at 7:00.
日曜日に会います。(Nichiyōbi ni aimasu.) — We'll meet on Sunday.
Only clock-and-calendar times take に (7時, 日曜日, 三月…). Relative words like 今日, 明日, 毎朝 stand alone: 明日行きます — no particle.
Job 4: The receiver or target
友だちに会います。(Tomodachi ni aimasu.) — I meet a friend.
母にプレゼントをあげます。(Haha ni purezento o agemasu.) — I give my mother a present.
電車に乗ります。(Densha ni norimasu.) — I get on the train.
2. で — The Action-Zone & Tool Particle
で (de) marks the place where an action happens, or the means/tool used to do it.
Job 1: Place of action — "at/in"
図書館で勉強します。(Toshokan de benkyō shimasu.) — I study at the library.
レストランで晩ごはんを食べます。(Resutoran de bangohan o tabemasu.) — I eat dinner at a restaurant.
Job 2: Means, tool, or method — "by/with"
電車で行きます。(Densha de ikimasu.) — I go by train.
はしで食べます。(Hashi de tabemasu.) — I eat with chopsticks.
日本語で話します。(Nihongo de hanashimasu.) — We speak in Japanese.
The crucial contrast: に vs で for places
Both can translate as "at/in" — the difference is what the verb does:
| Particle | Verb type | Example |
|---|---|---|
| に | Being verbs — existing, staying: あります, います, 住みます | 東京に住んでいます — I live in Tokyo (a state of being there) |
| で | Doing verbs — actions performed at the place: 食べます, 買います, 働きます… | 東京で働きます — I work in Tokyo (an activity happening there) |
Memory hook: に = a pin (where something IS); で = a stage (where something HAPPENS). Compare: 部屋にいます (I'm in the room) vs 部屋で勉強します (I study in the room).
3. へ — The Direction Particle
へ (read "e" as a particle — the last spelling relic, completing the set with は and を!) marks direction of movement, "toward":
日本へ行きます。(Nihon e ikimasu.) — I'm going to Japan.
For destinations, に and へ are interchangeable in practice — に pinpoints the destination, へ emphasizes the journey toward it. Everyday speech leans に; you'll meet へ on signs (東京方面へ, "toward Tokyo") and in the letter-opening 田中さんへ ("Dear Tanaka"). Knowing both means never being confused; using に is never wrong.
4. と — "And" & "With"
Job 1: Connecting nouns — "and"
パンと卵を買います。(Pan to tamago o kaimasu.) — I buy bread and eggs.
父と母と姉がいます。(Chichi to haha to ane ga imasu.) — There's my father, mother, and older sister.
と lists things exhaustively — the complete list, nothing else. (It connects nouns only — connecting sentences uses different tools, coming at N5.)
Job 2: Companion — "with"
友だちと映画を見ます。(Tomodachi to eiga o mimasu.) — I watch a movie with a friend.
誰と行きますか。(Dare to ikimasu ka.) — Who are you going with?
Bonus solo word: 一人で (hitori de) — "alone, by myself": 一人で旅行します (I travel alone).
5. も — "Also / Too"
も (mo) means "also" — and here's the mechanical rule: も replaces は or が (it doesn't stack on them):
私は学生です。弟も学生です。(Watashi wa gakusei desu. Otōto mo gakusei desu.) — I'm a student. My little brother is also a student.
すしが好きです。ラーメンも好きです。— I like sushi. I also like ramen.
In negative sentences, も means "neither/not either": 時間もありません (There's no time either). And doubled it means "both": 父も母も元気です — "Both dad and mom are well."
6. の — The Connector: Possession & Description
の (no) links two nouns, with the first describing the second — possession, affiliation, or type. The pattern is always [owner/description] の [thing]:
| Flavor | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Possession | 私の本 (watashi no hon) | my book |
| Affiliation | 会社の人 (kaisha no hito) | a person from the company |
| Type/origin | 日本語の先生 (nihongo no sensei) | a Japanese-language teacher |
| Position (from the vocabulary section!) | 机の上 (tsukue no ue) | the top of the desk → on the desk |
の chains happily: 私の日本語の先生の車 (my Japanese teacher's car) — just read left to right, each の meaning "…'s". And when the thing is obvious, drop it: この傘は私のです (Kono kasa wa watashi no desu) — "This umbrella is mine."
Careful with order — it's the reverse of English "of": 日本の地図 = "map of Japan" (Japan's map), not "Japan of map"!
7. All Together Now
明日、私は友だちと電車で京都に行きます。京都で友だちの家族に会います。晩ごはんもいっしょに食べます。
(Ashita, watashi wa tomodachi to densha de Kyōto ni ikimasu. Kyōto de tomodachi no kazoku ni aimasu. Bangohan mo issho ni tabemasu.)
— Tomorrow I'm going to Kyoto with a friend by train. In Kyoto I'll meet my friend's family. We'll also have dinner together.
Count them: と (with), で (by means of), に (destination), で (place of action), の (possession), に (person met), も (also). Seven particle jobs in three sentences — and you understood every one!
8. Practice: Choose the Particle
| Sentence | Answer & why |
|---|---|
| 毎朝、6時( )起きます。 | に — clock time |
| カフェ( )コーヒーを飲みます。 | で — place of action |
| トイレはあそこ( )あります。 | に — location of existence |
| バス( )会社に行きます。 | で — means of transport |
| これは先生( )かばんです。 | の — possession |
| 母( )デパートに行きます。 | と — companion |
| 兄は医者です。姉( )医者です。 | も — "also" (replacing は) |
| 週末、大阪( )行きます。 | に or へ — destination (both correct!) |
Summary & Key Takeaways
- に = the pin: destination (学校に行きます), existence-place (机の上にあります), clock/calendar time (7時に), receiver (友だちに会います).
- で = the stage & the tool: place of action (図書館で勉強します), means (電車で, はしで, 日本語で).
- に is where something is; で is where something happens.
- へ (read "e") = direction "toward"; に can nearly always substitute.
- と = "and" for complete noun lists, and "with" for companions.
- も = "also/too" — it replaces は/が; doubled = "both"; in negatives = "neither".
- の = "…'s": possession, affiliation, type, and position phrases (机の上). Order is the reverse of English "of".
- Relative time words (今日, 毎朝…) take no particle. With these nine particles total, you can now express who, what, where, when, how, with whom, and whose — next we make the verbs dance: conjugation!
