Three texts of ~500 characters — now 評論 (critical essays) and 解説 (expert explanations) — with three questions each. The N2 zone-reading method holds completely; the N1 additions are abstraction (arguments about concepts, not episodes) and voice-weaving (cited views vs the writer's). This chapter drills both through a worked critical text.
1. Reading Abstraction Without Drowning
- Ground every abstraction in its example. N1 essays state a thesis abstractly, then give one concrete case. When the thesis sentence resists you, read the example FIRST, then return — the example is the thesis in costume.
- Track the concept-word. Each essay coins or borrows a keyword (「距離感」「当事者意識」…) and the questions orbit it. Its definition is always in the text — usually right after its first appearance, flagged by とは/つまり/いわば.
Questions about 筆者の考え must not be paid with cited views (the N1 distractor factory's best seller).
2. Worked Text (Exam Simulation)
Question 1 — meaning of the underlined
Walkthrough: the window sentences: The lost thing = the analytical view → ②. ① literalizes the metaphor — N1's oldest trick.
Question 2 — referent
→ 共感と分析 (stated three words earlier — backward search remains unbeatable). Distractors pair 共感 with plausible neighbors (同情, 感情) that the text never coordinated.
Question 3 — writer's claim
Walkthrough: the last paragraph disarms both extremes explicitly (否定するのではない) and crowns the combination with こそ… ①② are the halves the writer refused to choose — N1 essays love the BOTH-AND resolution, and the wrong options are always the single halves.
3. The N1 Distractor Refinements
| Refinement | Looks like | Antidote |
|---|---|---|
| Literalized metaphor | 見えなくなる → eyesight | metaphors resolve to the example's logic |
| Half of a both-and | "only analysis matters" | 否定するのではない flags a synthesis coming |
| Cited view as writer's | 「良い聞き手の条件だと言われる」quoted as claim | voice-check every claim option |
4. Pace
- ~7 minutes per text. Nine points — the reading section's engine room at N1 too.
- If an abstract paragraph stalls you twice, skip to its example and return. Never re-read abstractions cold — always through their examples.
Summary & Key Takeaways
- N1 中文 = critical essays; ground abstractions in their examples, track the coined keyword, separate voices.
- Both-and resolutions rule N1 essays; single-half options are decoys, and 否定するのではない announces the synthesis.
- Literalized metaphors, cited-as-claim, and degree inflation are the refined distractor set.
- Zone-reading + evidence discipline, unchanged since N4, still pays every point.
