Steering the Editorial

The N1 cloze passage (5 items) is a compressed editorial or critical essay in full 硬い文体: である-register, nominalized argument, classical negatives, and blanks that test viewpoint and modality management — whose voice is speaking (the writer? the cited public? a hypothetical opponent?) and how firmly. Mechanics from N2 carry; this chapter adds the last layer of machinery.

1. The N1 Connector Register

SignalN1 formsNote
Cause/resultしたがって, ゆえに, それゆえ, 以上ゆえに = the logician's therefore
しかし = the editorial wave
Supplement/retreatもっとも, ただし, なおpartial retreat without surrender
Framingそもそも, いわば, 果たして, むしろそもそも re-opens first principles; いわば coins a metaphor

New precision pairs: そもそも (going back to fundamentals — often opens the writer's deeper claim) vs いわば (so to speak — flags a coined analogy, and the analogy is often quoted in a question); ひいては (small point → national consequence) belongs to argument escalation.

2. Voice Management: Whose Sentence Is This?

N1 passages weave three voices, and blanks test whether you can tell them apart:

  • The cited public: 〜と言われている, 〜とされる, 一般に〜と考えられている — received opinion, soon to be qualified.
  • The hypothetical opponent: 〜という反論もあろう, 〜と思う人もいるかもしれない — a voice raised to be answered (だが…).

Cloze blanks at voice boundaries want the marker of the NEXT voice: after presenting the public view, the blank often needs だが/しかし+the writer's か-clause; after the writer's claim, a blank may need もっとも to grant the opponent an inch. Label voices in the margin as you read — V1 (public), V2 (opponent), V3 (writer).

3. Classical Machinery in Running Text

  • 〜ぬ/〜ざる negatives mid-sentence: 少なからぬ影響 (no small influence), 絶えざる努力 (ceaseless effort) — read them as ない without blinking.
  • 〜まい in essays: 単純な問題ではあるまい (it is surely not simple) — conjectural negative, a claim in disguise.
  • んがため/べく purpose clauses: 生き残らんがための競争 — the classical infinitive of purpose.
  • Nominalized spine: 〜こと・〜の・〜ものだ chains — the editorial's subject is often a 40-character nominalized clause; find its head noun before judging the predicate blank.

4. Worked Passage (Compressed Simulation)

  1. Concession-completing ender: 見えるかもしれない — granting the surface rationality (V1's strongest case, stated fairly).
  2. The pivot into the writer's challenge: だが/しかし — followed by the rhetorical ものだろうか (a V3 claim disguised as a question).
  3. After conceding budget limits (認めざるを得ない — reluctant concession!), the blank turns concession into fuel: しかし/だが… stronger: だからこそ is already printed — so the blank wants a connector that ushers it: いや, むしろ? The clean fit: むしろ — "if anything, precisely because of that…"
  4. Basis contrast: 数字によってではなく/数字のみならず… the printed に即して afterward wants its contrasting partner: 数字ではなく (not by numbers but in line with residents' voices).

Note the density: every blank sat at a voice boundary or frame joint. That's N1 — the passage is a machine, and the blanks are its gears.

5. Strategy Checklist

  • Read whole passage; label voices (V1/V2/V3) and mark the wave joints
  • Ender blanks: match the voice — received views take とされる, writer's claims take ではあるまいか/べきだ.
  • Frame blanks: scan for printed halves (だからこそ, に即して) and supply the missing partner.
  • Register discipline is absolute: no です/ます intrusions, no colloquial forms (のなんのって) in である prose.
  • 5 items ≈ 8 minutes including the read.

Summary & Key Takeaways

  • N1 cloze = editorial steering: connector register (だが, ゆえに, ひいては, そもそも, いわば), classical negatives (ぬ/ざる/まい), nominalized spines.
  • Three voices — public (とされる), opponent (という反論もあろう), writer (ではあるまいか) — and blanks live at their boundaries.
  • Rhetorical questions (ものだろうか) are claims; reluctant concessions (認めざるを得ない) are setups for だからこそ.
  • Complete printed frames (AではなくBに即して); match register without mercy.
