N5 Grammar Course, Part 2: The Verb-Form Engine

Part A gave you particles and sentence frames. Part B is the engine room: almost every remaining N5 grammar point is built on one of four verb forms — て-form, ない-form, た-form, and the plain (dictionary) form. Learn the four conversions once, and ~40 grammar points snap on like attachments. This chapter also trains 問題2(文の組み立て)— the famous "star" scramble question — with a reliable 3-step method.

1. The て-Form: One Conversion, Ten Grammar Points

The て-form is Japanese's connector form. The conversion rules (memorize with the classic rhythm):

GroupEndingRuleExamples
Group 1 (u-verbs)う・つ・る→ って買う→買って, 待つ→待って, 乗る→乗って
ぬ・ぶ・む→ んで死ぬ→死んで, 遊ぶ→遊んで, 飲む→飲んで
く/ぐ→ いて/いで書く→書いて, 泳ぐ→泳いで(例外: 行く→行って!)
→ して話す→話して
Group 2 (ru-verbs)→ て食べる→食べて, 見る→見て, 起きる→起きて
Irregularmemorizeする→して, 来る→来て(きて)

The て-family (all tested at N5)

PatternMeaningExample
~てくださいplease do ~ここに名前を書いてください。
~てもいい(ですか)may ~ / may I ~?ここで写真を撮ってもいいですか。
~てはいけませんmust not ~ここに車を止めてはいけません。
~ちゃいけない/じゃいけないmust not (spoken contraction)ここで遊んじゃいけないよ。
~ていますis doing; state; habit今、雨が降っています。/結婚しています。/銀行で働いています。
~てありますhas been done (state left by someone)壁に絵がかけてあります。
~てからafter doing ~手を洗ってから、食べます。
て、て、…listing actions in order朝起きて、シャワーをあびて、学校へ行きます。

ています has three faces — the exam tests all of them: action now (降っています), resulting state (結婚しています — is married, not "is marrying"!), habit (毎朝走っています). And まだ+〜ていません = "haven't ~ yet": 昼ごはんはまだ食べていません — pairing with もう+〜ました (already did) in the classic polarity trap.

2. The ない-Form: Duty and Prohibition

Formation: Group 1 — final u → a + ない (書く→書かない; 買う→買ない!); Group 2 — る→ない (食べない); する→しない, 来る→来ない(こない).

PatternMeaningExample
~ないでくださいplease don't ~ここでタバコを吸わないでください。
~ないで(+action)do B without doing A朝ごはんを食べないで学校へ来ました。
~なくてもいいですdon't have to ~あしたは来なくてもいいです。
~なくてはいけませんmust ~毎日薬を飲まなくてはいけません。
~なくてはなりませんmust ~ (more formal/written)今晩レポートを書かなくてはなりません。
~ないといけませんmust ~ (common spoken)もう帰らないといけません。
~なくちゃgotta ~ (casual contraction)もう行かなくちゃ。
~な(dictionary form+な)don't! (blunt prohibition — signs, angry speech)ここに入るな。

The "must" quartet (なくてはいけない/なくてはならない/ないといけない/なくちゃ) all mean the same duty — the exam checks you can form them, not distinguish them. Build from the ない-form: 飲まない → 飲まなくては → 飲まなくてはいけません. And keep the logic map straight: てもいい = allowed, なくてもいい = not required, てはいけない = forbidden, なくてはいけない = required. Two axes, four corners — draw it once and never confuse them again.

3. The た-Form: Experience and Sampling

Formation: identical to the て-form with te→ta (買って→買った, 飲んで→飲んだ, 食べて→食べた).

PatternMeaningExample
~たことがありますhave (ever) done — experience富士山に登ったことがあります。
~たり~たりしますdo things like A and B (sampling)休みの日は本を読んだり、音楽を聞いたりします。
~たほうがいいですhad better ~ (advice)早く寝たほうがいいですよ。

Contrast the pair the exam loves: 日本へ行きました (I went — a fact in the past) vs 日本へ行ったことがあります (I have been — life experience). And たり…たり implies "among other things" — unlike て、て which lists a complete sequence in order.

4. The Plain Form: Foundation for Bigger Grammar

Plain forms (dictionary form 行く, ない-form 行かない, た-form 行った, plain negative past 行かなかった) power these N5 patterns:

PatternMeaningExample
dictionary form+前にbefore doing ~寝る前に歯をみがきます。
plain form+ときwhen ~子どものとき、大阪に住んでいました。/出かけるとき、電気を消します。
dictionary form+つもりですintend to ~夏休みに国へ帰るつもりです。
~でしょう/だろうprobably (forecast tone)あしたは晴れるでしょう。
dictionary form+の+が好き/上手/下手like / good at / bad at doing音楽を聞くのが好きです。/歌うのが下手です。
stem+に行きますgo (somewhere) to do ~デパートへかばんを買いに行きます。

Note the nominalizer の: it turns a verb phrase into a noun so が好き can grab it — the N5 seed of a huge N4-N1 grammar family. And 買い行く uses the ます-stem: 買います→買い+に行く, 見ます→見に行く, 食べます→食べに行く.

5. Clause Connectors

PatternMeaningExample
~からbecause (speaker's reason)暑いですから、窓を開けてください。
~のでbecause (softer, objective)雨が降っているので、家にいます。
~がbut (polite clause joiner)すみませんが、もう一度おねがいします。
~けど/けれどもbut, although (casual / softer)高いけど、おいしいです。

Sentence-initial connectors (そして, それから, でも, しかし, では…) belong to text-level grammar — they star in the 文章の文法 chapter next.

6. 問題2 文の組み立て: The Star Question Method

Format: a sentence with 4 blanks —__ __ _★_ __— and 4 scrambled fragments. You must mentally assemble the correct sentence and answer which fragment lands on the ★ (usually the third blank). 4 items. The 3-step method:

  1. Find the grammar frame. Scan the fragments for pieces that must connect: a て-form begs its ください/もいい; a dictionary form begs 前に/つもり; のほうが begs より. Frames assemble 2-3 fragments instantly.
  2. Chunk by particles. Particles glue leftward: [友だちと], [映画を], [見に]. Build the chunks, then order them by the natural skeleton [topic][time][place][object][verb].
  3. Read the whole sentence silently, then pick the ★ fragment — not the fragment you placed first! Careless test-takers assemble correctly and still answer the wrong blank. Mark the ★ position before moving on.

Worked example

私は __ __ _★_ __ ことがあります。
fragments: ① 日本の ② 映画を ③ 見た ④ 友だちと

Frame-spot: ことがあります wants a た-form right before it (experience!) — so 見た(③) sits in the last blank. Chunk by particles: [友だちと] [日本の] [映画を]. Assemble: 友だちと(④) 日本の(①) 映画を(②) 見た(③) ことがあります — "I have watched Japanese movies with friends." The ★ is the third blank → ② 映画を. Assemble first, then read the star — the answer is a position, not a feeling.

7. How 問題1 Tests Part B — Worked Examples

ここでたばこを( )ください。
① すって ② すわないで ③ すいながら ④ すった → : "please don't smoke here" — ないで+ください.

日本のりょうりを( )ことがありますか。
① 作る ② 作った ③ 作り ④ 作って → : experience = た-form+ことがある.

もう昼ごはんを食べましたか。— いいえ、( )。
① もう食べました ② まだ食べていません ③ まだ食べました ④ もう食べていません → : the もう/まだ polarity pair.

Summary & Key Takeaways

  • Four conversions power ~40 grammar points: (って/んで/いて/して rules, 行って exception), ない (u→a+ない, 買わない), (=て with a), plain form.
  • て-family: ください, てもいい, てはいけない, ています (3 faces: now/state/habit), てある, てから. Permission compass: てもいい/なくてもいい/てはいけない/なくてはいけない.
  • た-family: たことがある (experience), たり~たり (sampling), たほうがいい (advice).
  • Plain-form family: 前に, とき, つもり, でしょう, のが好き/上手/下手; stem+に行く for purpose.
  • から (subjective) vs ので (objective) both give reasons; が/けど join contrasts.
  • 問題2 method: find the frame → chunk by particles → assemble fully → answer the ★ position, not your first placement.
