1. What is Climate Change?
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. While the Earth's climate has changed naturally over millions of years, the changes we see today are happening much faster because of human activities.
A. Trends in Temperature and Precipitation
- Global Warming: Scientists have observed a steady rise in the Earth's average temperature over the last century.
- Changing Rain Patterns: Some places are getting much more rain (leading to floods), while others are getting much less (leading to droughts).
B. The Greenhouse Effect: Our Earth's "Blanket"
To understand climate change, we first need to understand the Greenhouse Effect. Imagine a car parked in the sun with the windows rolled up. The sunlight gets in, but the heat can't get out. The car gets very hot! The Earth works in a similar way.
- The Earth is surrounded by Greenhouse Gases (like carbon dioxide).
- These gases act like a blanket, trapping heat from the sun to keep our planet warm enough for us to live.
- The Problem: By burning fuels and cutting down trees, humans are making this "blanket" too thick. Now, the Earth is trapping too much heat!

2. Why is it Happening? (Human Causes)

- Burning Fossil Fuels: When we burn coal, oil, and gas for electricity or transport, we release huge amounts of carbon dioxide.
- Deforestation: Trees are Carbon Sinks (they soak up carbon dioxide). When we cut them down, there are fewer "sponges" to clean the air.
- Industrial Activities: Factories and modern farming also release various greenhouse gases.
3. How Does Climate Change Affect the World?
Climate change is like a "threat multiplier"—it takes existing problems and makes them worse. Here are the major impacts:
A. Extreme Weather
We are seeing more frequent and severe extreme weather events. This includes stronger typhoons, record-breaking heatwaves, and "rain bombs" that cause sudden flooding.
B. Droughts and Floods
As precipitation patterns change, some regions experience severe droughts, making it hard to find water. Other areas face floods that destroy homes and infrastructure.
C. Sea-level Rise
As the world warms, ice on land (like glaciers) melts into the ocean. Also, warmer water takes up more space. This causes sea levels to rise, which threatens coastal cities and islands.
D. Food and Health
- Disruption of Crop Yields: Farmers find it harder to grow food when the weather is unpredictable. This affects our food supply.
- Spread of Disease: Warmer weather allows insects like mosquitoes to move into new areas, carrying diseases to more people.
- Ecosystem Changes: Plants and animals may lose their homes if they cannot adapt to the new temperatures quickly enough.
4. Taking Action: Mitigation and Adaptation
How do we deal with this? Geographers divide the "actions" into two types: Mitigation and Adaptation.
A. Mitigation (Attacking the Root Cause)
This means reducing the amount of greenhouse gases we put into the air. We want to stop the problem from getting worse.
- National Level (Examples):
- China: Investing heavily in renewable energy (like wind and solar) and New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) to reduce carbon emissions.
- Sweden: Using carbon taxes and moving towards a "fossil-free" society.
- Individual Level: You can help by saving electricity, using public transport, and practicing the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).
B. Adaptation (Living with the Changes)
Since the climate is already changing, we must learn to live with it.
- Building sea walls to protect against rising sea levels.
- Developing drought-resistant crops.
- Improving early warning systems for typhoons and floods.
