Note: This module is part of the "Management and Responses" section, so we will focus a lot on how we handle these events!
1. What is a Natural Hazard?
A natural hazard is a natural event (like a storm or an earthquake) that has the potential to cause harm to people, damage property, or disrupt our daily lives. If a giant storm hits an empty desert where no one lives, it is just a "natural event." If it hits a big city like Hong Kong, it becomes a natural hazard.
2. Typhoons: The Powerful Storms
In Asia, we call these strong tropical cyclones "typhoons." In other parts of the world, they might be called hurricanes or cyclones.
Where do they happen and why?
Typhoons are usually found in tropical oceans. They need specific conditions to form:
- Warm Sea Water: The sea temperature must be at least \(26.5^{\circ}C\) to provide energy.
- Moist Air: To create clouds and rain.
- Low Pressure: A place where air rises quickly.
What happens during a typhoon?
Typhoons bring weather conditions like:
1. Strong Winds: Can blow down trees and signs.
2. Heavy Rain: Can lead to secondary disasters like floods and landslides.
3. Storm Surges: The wind pushes sea water onto the land, causing coastal flooding.

Typhoons cause negative effects such as:
