In Geography, it is easy to get caught up in the details of how a volcano erupts or how a city regenerates. However, the synoptic themes are what help you see the "big picture." Synoptic simply means "seeing everything together."
In your exams, especially for those 16-mark questions at the end of Paper 1 and Paper 2, you need to show how different parts of geography link up. You do this by looking through three special "lenses": Players, Attitudes and Actions, and Futures and Uncertainties. Let’s break these down so you can use them like a pro!
1. Players (P): The "Who" of Geography
Think of Players as the characters in a story. In any geographical issue—whether it is managing a tectonic disaster or regenerating a town—there are individuals, groups, and organisations involved. These players often have different amounts of power and different goals.
Types of Players You Need to Know:
- International Organisations (IGOs): Big global groups like the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Bank. They often set the "rules" for global trade and finance.
- National Governments: They make the laws, decide on infrastructure (like high-speed rail), and manage disaster responses.
- Local Governments: They focus on making their specific area attractive for investment or managing local sea defences.
- Transnational Corporations (TNCs): Private businesses that operate in many countries. Their main goal is usually profit, and they have massive influence over globalisation.
- Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Pressure Groups: Groups like charities or local activists who fight for social justice or the environment.
Why do some players have more influence?
Power isn't shared equally. A TNC might have more money than a small country’s government, giving them more "say" in how a place develops. This leads to inequality between different groups of people.
Quick Tip: When writing about a case study, ask yourself: "Who is winning here, and who is losing?" This identifies the players and their influence.
2. Attitudes and Actions (A): The "Why" and "How"
Why does one person want to build a factory while another wants to plant a forest? It all comes down to attitudes. These views influence the actions (the strategies) that people choose.
What shapes an attitude?
- Profit: TNCs and some governments prioritise economic growth and making money.
- Social Justice: NGOs often focus on whether a project is fair for everyone, especially the poor or vulnerable.
- Conservation vs. Exploitation: Should we protect a glaciated landscape (conservation) or use it for tourism and mining (exploitation)?
- Political and Religious views: These can dictate how a country responds to migration or climate change.
How attitudes turn into policy:
If a government’s attitude is "pro-business," they might use deregulation (removing rules) to encourage Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). If their attitude is "pro-environment," they might choose sustainable strategies like managed retreat at the coast instead of building big concrete walls.

- Political Uncertainty: A new government might completely scrap an old plan (like a new airport or railway).

- Causality: The relationship between cause and effect. (e.g., Globalisation causes a global shift in industry).
- Systems: A set of linked parts. (e.g., A glacier is a system with inputs like snow and outputs like meltwater).
- Thresholds: The "tipping point" where a small change causes a massive, irreversible shift in a system.
- Interdependence: How countries rely on each other (e.g., through globalisation and trade).
- Identity: How people feel about their local area, which can be affected by regeneration or migration.
- Risk: The probability of a hazard causing harmful consequences.
Common Mistake to Avoid: Don't just "drop" these words into your essay like a list. Use them to explain why something is happening. For example: "The interdependence created by TNCs means that an economic crash in one country has causality for workers in another."
