Theme 1: Identity and Culture — Daily Life
Welcome to your study notes for Daily Life! In this chapter, we will explore three key everyday topics: customs and everyday life, food and drink, and shopping. These topics are central to all four Pearson Edexcel GCSE (9–1) Chinese (1CN0) papers: Paper 1 (Listening), Paper 2 (Speaking), Paper 3 (Reading), and Paper 4 (Writing).
Whether you are preparing for Foundation Tier or Higher Tier, or choosing between Simplified (简体字) and Traditional (繁體字) characters, mastering this vocabulary and grammar will give you the confidence to describe your daily routine, order food in a restaurant, and go shopping like a native speaker!
1. Customs & Everyday Life (日常生活与习惯 / 日常生活與習慣)
Describing your daily routine is one of the most common tasks in GCSE Speaking (Role Play, Picture Task, General Conversation) and Writing. Let's break down the essential vocabulary step-by-step.
A. Daily Routine Actions (From Morning to Night)
• 起床 (qǐchuáng) — to wake up / get out of bed
• 刷牙 (shuāyá) — to brush teeth
• 洗澡 (xǐzǎo) — to take a shower or bath
• 穿衣服 (chuān yīfu) — to get dressed / put on clothes
• 上学 / 上班 (shàngxué / shàngbān) — to go to school / to go to work
• 放学 / 下班 (fàngxué / xiàbān) — to finish school / to finish work
• 回家 (huíjiā) — to return home
• 睡觉 (shuìjiào) — to go to sleep
B. Sequencing and Frequency Words
To reach higher marks in speaking and writing, you should connect your daily actions using time markers and frequency words:
• 先……然后…… (xiān... ránhòu...) — first... then...
Example: 我先洗澡,然后吃早饭。(Wǒ xiān xǐzǎo, ránhòu chī zǎofàn. — I first take a shower, then eat breakfast.)
• 常常 / 经常 (chángcháng / jīngcháng) — often
• 有时候 (yǒushíhou) — sometimes
• 从来不 / 从来没 (cónglái bù / cónglái méi) — never (habitual) / have never
C. Helping Around the House (家务 / 家務)
• 做饭 (zuòfàn) — to cook
• 打扫 (dǎsǎo) — to clean
• 洗碗 (xǐwǎn) — to wash dishes
• 整理房间 (zhěnglǐ fángjiān) — to tidy the room
Key Takeaway for Everyday Life: Always use sequence words like 先……然后…… to link routine actions logically. This instantly makes your Chinese sound more natural!
2. Food & Drink (饮食 / 飲食)
Food is a massive part of Chinese culture. You will frequently hear and read about restaurant visits, traditional dishes, and dietary preferences.
A. Three Meals & Ordering Out
• 早饭 (zǎofàn) — breakfast
• 午饭 (wǔfàn) — lunch
• 晚饭 (wǎnfàn) — dinner
• 菜单 (càidān) — menu
• 点菜 (diǎncài) — to order food
• 买单 / 结账 (mǎidān / jiézhàng) — to pay the bill
B. Common Foods & Staples
• 米饭 (mǐfàn) — cooked rice
• 面条 (miàntiáo) — noodles
• 包子 (bāozi) — steamed stuffed buns
• 饺子 (jiǎozi) — dumplings
• 面包 (miànbāo) — bread
• 鸡蛋 (jīdàn) — eggs

C. Drinks & Flavours (味道 / 味道)
• Drinks: 水 (shuǐ - water), 茶 (chá - tea), 绿茶 (lǜchá - green tea), 红茶 (hóngchá - black tea), 果汁 (guǒzhī - fruit juice), 牛奶 (niúnǎi - milk), 咖啡 (kāfēi - coffee).
• Flavours: 甜 (tián - sweet), 辣 (là - spicy), 咸 (xián - salty), 酸 (suān - sour).
• Describing Taste: 好吃 (hǎochī - delicious to eat), 好喝 (hǎohē - delicious to drink).
D. Dietary Preferences & Health
• 吃素 / 素食 (chīsù / sùshí) — to eat vegetarian food / vegetarian diet
• 对……过敏 (duì... guòmǐn) — to be allergic to... (e.g. 我对花生过敏 — I am allergic to peanuts)
• 健康饮食 (jiànkāng yǐnshí) — healthy diet
Key Takeaway for Food & Drink: Distinguish between things you eat (好吃) and things you drink (好喝). In speaking tasks, examiners love to hear opinions on healthy eating!
3. Shopping & Money Matters (购物与消费 / 購物與消費)
Shopping scenarios often appear in Paper 2 Role Plays and Paper 1 Listening recordings.
A. Places to Shop & Items
• 商店 / 商场 (shāngdiàn / shāngchǎng) — shop / shopping mall
• 超市 (chāoshì) — supermarket
• 市场 (shìchǎng) — market
• 网上购物 / 网购 (wǎngshàng gòuwù / wǎnggòu) — online shopping

• 卖 (mài) — to sell (4th tone)
• 多少钱? (duōshao qián?) — How much does it cost?
• 贵 (guì) — expensive
• 便宜 (piányi) — cheap
• 打折 (dǎzhé) — discount / on sale
• 零用钱 (língyòngqián) — pocket money
• Currency Units: 块 / 元 (kuài / yuán — main unit), 毛 / 角 (máo / jiǎo — 1/10th of a yuan), 分 (fēn — cent/penny), 英镑 (yīngbàng — pound sterling £).
C. Sizing & Trying Items On
• 大小 (dàxiǎo) — size (literally: big-small)
• 合适 (héshì) — suitable / fitting well
• 试一试 (shì yi shì) — to try on / have a try
Key Takeaway for Shopping: Always listen or look out for price markers (块/元) and whether an item is described as 贵 (expensive) or 便宜 (cheap).
4. Essential Grammar & Syntactic Structures
A. The Golden Rule of Word Order (Time & Place)
In English, we say: "I eat breakfast at 7:00 am in the kitchen."
In Chinese, time and place must come BEFORE the action verb!
Formula: Subject + Time When + (Place) + Verb + Object
• Correct: 我早上七点在厨房吃早饭。(Wǒ zǎoshang qī diǎn zài chúfáng chī zǎofàn.)
• Incorrect: *我吃早饭在七点在厨房。
B. Measure Words (量词 / 量詞)
In Chinese, you must place a measure word between a number and a noun. Don't just use 个 (gè) for everything!
• 件 (jiàn) — for upper-body clothes/items: 一件衣服 (a piece of clothing), 一件衬衫 (a shirt)
• 条 (tiáo) — for long, flexible items: 一条裤子 (a pair of trousers), 一条鱼 (a fish)
• 双 (shuāng) — for pairs: 一双鞋子 (a pair of shoes), 一双筷子 (a pair of chopsticks)
• 杯 (bēi) — cup/glass: 一杯茶 (a cup of tea)
• 碗 (wǎn) — bowl: 一碗米饭 (a bowl of rice)
• 瓶 (píng) — bottle: 一瓶水 (a bottle of water)
C. Comparatives (比) and Superlatives (最)
To compare shopping methods or food choices:
• Comparative: A + 比 + B + Adjective
Example: 网上买衣服比在商店买便宜。(Wǎngshàng mǎi yīfu bǐ zài shāngdiàn mǎi piányi. — Buying clothes online is cheaper than buying in shops.)
• Superlative: 最 + Adjective / Verb
Example: 我最喜欢吃饺子。(Wǒ zuì xǐhuan chī jiǎozi. — I like eating dumplings the most.)
D. Timeframes and Aspect Markers
• Completed Action (Past): Use 了 (le) after the verb, or 过 (guo) for past experience.
Example: 昨天我买了一件新衣服。(Yesterday I bought a new piece of clothing.)
• Ongoing Action (Present Continuous): Use 正在 (zhèngzài) or 在 (zài).
Example: 我正在做饭。(I am currently cooking.)
• Future Plans: Use 打算 (dǎsuàn - plan to) or 想 / 要 (xiǎng / yào - want to).
Example: 明天我打算去超市。(Tomorrow I plan to go to the supermarket.)
E. Conjunctions for Higher-Tier Justifications
• 因为……所以…… (yīnwèi... suǒyǐ...) — because... therefore...
• 虽然……但是…… (suīrán... dànshì...) — although... but...
• 除了……以外,还 / 也…… (chúle... yǐwài, hái / yě...) — apart from..., also...
5. Common Pitfalls & Exam Traps
Watch out for these common errors highlighted in examiner reports:
1. Confusing 买 (mǎi) and 卖 (mài):
• 买 (mǎi, 3rd tone) = to buy.
• 卖 (mài, 4th tone) = to sell.
Memory Trick: 卖 has a "cross / plus sign" (十) on top — think of a shopkeeper putting extra items on top of the counter to sell them!
2. Negating Past Actions with 不 instead of 没:
• To say you didn't do something in the past, use 没 (没有), NOT 不.
Wrong: *我昨天不吃早饭。
Correct: 我昨天没吃早饭。(Wǒ zuótiān méi chī zǎofàn. — I didn't eat breakfast yesterday.)
3. The "吃" vs "吃饭" Trap:
• 吃饭 (chīfàn) means "to have a meal". The word 饭 is already the object.
Wrong: *我吃饭牛肉。
Correct: 我吃牛肉。(Wǒ chī niúròu. — I eat beef.) OR 我在吃饭。(Wǒ zài chīfàn. — I am eating a meal.)
4. Missing Justifications:
In the Writing (Paper 4) and Speaking (Paper 2) exams, simply listing what you bought or ate limits your score. Always add an opinion and a reason using 因为……所以…… (e.g. "I bought this shirt because it was very cheap.").
