Theme 3: School — School Activities: Trips, Events, and Exchanges
Welcome to your complete revision guide for School Activities! Whether you are preparing for Paper 1 (Listening), Paper 2 (Speaking), Paper 3 (Reading), or Paper 4 (Writing), talking about what happens outside the regular classroom is a core part of your Pearson Edexcel GCSE (9–1) Chinese course.
In this chapter, you will master the language needed to describe exciting school outings, memorable events like sports days and concerts, and life-changing exchange trips to China. Do not worry if memorising Chinese characters feels daunting at first; we will break down the vocabulary, grammar patterns, and common pitfalls into clear, manageable steps.
Note: In your Edexcel exam papers, texts are provided in both Simplified and Traditional characters side by side. You may write your answers in either script, but remember to stay consistent throughout your work!
---1. Core Thematic Vocabulary
To score high marks, you need a strong bank of topic-specific vocabulary. Let us divide these into three key areas: School Trips, School Events, and Student Exchanges.
A. School Trips and Outings (学校旅行 / 學校旅行)
• School trip / excursion: 学校旅行 / 學校旅行 (xuéxiào lǚxíng) or 郊游 / 郊遊 (jiāoyóu)
• To visit / tour a place: 参观 / 參觀 (cānguān)
• To visit / call on someone: 访问 / 訪問 (fǎngwèn)
• Museum: 博物馆 / 博物館 (bówùguǎn)
• Art gallery: 美术馆 / 美術館 (měishùguǎn)

B. School Events and Celebrations (学校活动 / 學校活動)
• Sports day: 运动会 / 運動會 (yùndònghuì)
• School concert / musical performance: 音乐会 / 音樂會 (yīnyuèhuì) or 演出 (yǎnchū)

• To experience: 体验 / 體驗 (tǐyàn)
• To understand Chinese culture: 了解中国文化 / 瞭解中國文化 (liǎojiě zhōngguó wénhuà)
• To practise Chinese: 练习中文 / 練習中文 (liànxí zhōngwén)
• To improve Chinese level: 提高汉语水平 / 提高漢語水平 (tígāo hànyǔ shuǐpíng)
Quick Review & Takeaway: When talking about trips, pair the right verb with the right destination. You cānguān (参观) a museum, but you cānjiā (参加) an event like a sports day!
---2. Grammar & Sentence Structures: Mastering Time Frames
Under the Edexcel mark scheme for Speaking (Paper 2) and Writing (Paper 4), to reach the top marks bands you must refer to three time frames: past, present/habitual, and future. Here is how to construct each with confidence.
A. Talking About the Past (Past Actions & Completed Trips)
Use time markers like 去年 (qùnián - last year) or 上个星期 (shàng gè xīngqī - last week), combined with the aspect particle 了 (le) for completed action or 过 / 過 (guò) for past experience.
• Example: 去年我们去了北京,参观了故宫。
• Traditional: 去年我們去了北京,參觀了故宮。
• Pinyin: Qùnián wǒmen qù le Běijīng, cānguān le Gùgōng.
• Meaning: Last year we went to Beijing and visited the Forbidden City.
B. Talking About the Present or Habitual Routines
Use phrases like 每年 (měinián - every year) and 常常 (chángcháng - often) combined with 都 (dōu - all/both).
• Example: 每年我们学校都举办运动会。
• Traditional: 每年我們學校都舉辦運動會。
• Pinyin: Měinián wǒmen xuéxiào dōu jǔbàn yùndònghuì.
• Meaning: Every year our school holds a sports day.
C. Talking About the Future (Upcoming Trips & Exchanges)
Signal future intention clearly using 打算 (dǎsuàn - plan to), 计划 / 計劃 (jìhuà - plan), 将来 / 將來 (jiānglái - in the future), or 下个月 / 下個月 (xià gè yuè - next month).
• Example: 明年我打算参加去中国的交换学生项目。
• Traditional: 明年我打算參加去中國的交換學生項目。
• Pinyin: Míngnián wǒ dǎsuàn cānjiā qù Zhōngguó de jiāohuàn xuésheng xiàngmù.
• Meaning: Next year I plan to take part in the exchange student project to China.
3. Word Order Rule: How to Avoid "English Transfer"
One of the most frequent examiner-reported errors is copying English word order. In Chinese, details such as method of transport and location must come BEFORE the main action verb!
The Word Order Formula:
[Subject] + [Time] + [Transport: 坐...] + [Location: 在...] + [Action Verb]
• Incorrect English transfer: *我们参观了博物馆在伦敦 (*Wǒmen cānguān le bówùguǎn zài Lúndūn)
• Correct Mandarin: 我们在伦敦参观了博物馆。 / 我們在倫敦參觀了博物館。 (Wǒmen zài Lúndūn cānguān le bówùguǎn.)
• Incorrect English transfer: *我去北京坐飞机 (*Wǒ qù Běijīng zuò fēijī)
• Correct Mandarin: 我坐飞机去北京。 / 我坐飛機去北京。 (Wǒ zuò fēijī qù Běijīng.)
Memory Trick: Think of it as "Set the scene first, then do the action!" Get on the plane first, then arrive in Beijing. Be in London first, then visit the museum.
---4. Expressing Opinions and Complex Justifications
Examiners note that weaker candidates only use basic adjectives like 好 (hǎo - good) or 很好玩 (hěn hǎowán - fun). To reach the higher mark bands, you must justify your opinions using varied, evaluative vocabulary and complex conjunctions.
A. Giving Opinions
• I think / feel: 我觉得 / 我覺得 (wǒ juéde) or 我认为 / 我認爲 (wǒ rènwéi)
B. Positive Justifications
• Interesting / meaningful: 有意思 (yǒu yìsi)
• Broaden one's horizons: 开阔眼界 / 開闊眼界 (kāikuò yǎnjiè)
• Make new friends: 交新朋友 (jiāo xīn péngyou)
• Learn a lot of things: 学到很多东西 / 學到很多東西 (xuédào hěnduō dōngxi)
C. Negative Justifications
• Tiring: 累 (lèi)
• Boring: 无聊 / 無聊 (wúliáo)
• Troublesome / inconvenient: 麻烦 / 麻煩 (máfan)
• A waste of time: 浪费时间 / 浪費時間 (làngfèi shíjiān)
D. Higher-Tier Complex Connectives
• Cause & Effect: 因为……所以…… / 因爲……所以…… (yīnwèi... suǒyǐ... — Because... therefore...)
Example: 因为我想提高汉语水平,所以我参加了中国交流活动。 (Because I want to improve my Chinese level, I took part in the China exchange activity.)
• Contrast: 虽然……但是…… / 雖然……但是…… (suīrán... dànshì... — Although... but...)
Example: 虽然旅行很累,但是开阔了我的眼界。 (Although the trip was tiring, it broadened my horizons.)
• Progression: 不但……而且…… (búdàn... érqiě... — Not only... but also...)
Example: 参加学校音乐会不但很有意思,而且能交新朋友。 (Participating in the school concert is not only interesting, but also allows you to make new friends.)
• In Addition / Apart From: 除了……以外…… (chúle... yǐwài... — Apart from / besides...)
Example: 除了参观历史古迹以外,我们还吃了北京烤鸭。 (Apart from visiting historical sites, we also ate Peking duck.)
5. Watch Out! Pitfalls and Common Exam Traps
Pitfall 1: Confusing 参加, 参观, and 访问
• 参加 / 參加 (cānjiā): To participate/take part in an event, activity, or competition (e.g., 参加运动会 / 参加比赛).
• 参观 / 參觀 (cānguān): To visit/tour a place or attraction (e.g., 参观博物馆 / 参观学校).
• 访问 / 訪問 (fǎngwèn): To pay an official visit to a person, organisation, or sister school (e.g., 访问姐妹学校).
Pitfall 2: Character Confusion (Lookalike Characters)
Pay close attention to stroke accuracy so you do not confuse these common characters:
• 练 / 練 (liàn in 练习 - practice) vs 栋 / 棟 (dòng - measure word for buildings)
• 赛 / 賽 (sài in 比赛 - competition) vs 寒 (hán in 寒假 - winter holiday)
• 游 / 遊 (yóu in 郊游 / 旅游 - outing / tour) vs 旗 (qí - flag)
6. Summary & Exam Checklist
Before sitting your exam, make sure you can tick off each of these core skills for the School Activities topic:
1. Vocabulary: Can you name at least three school events (e.g., 运动会, 音乐会, 开放日) and three trip destinations (e.g., 博物馆, 动物园, 历史古迹)?
2. Three Time Frames: Can you write or speak about a trip you went on (using 了 / 去年), an event your school usually holds (using 每年 / 举办), and a future trip you plan to take (using 打算 / 计划)?
3. Word Order: Did you place the method of transport (坐校车) and the location (在伦敦) before the main action verb?
4. High-Level Opinions: Can you give balanced views using connectives like 虽然……但是…… and justifications like 开阔眼界 or 提高汉语水平?
