Introduction to UK Terrestrial Ecosystems

Welcome! In our previous lessons, we looked at massive global ecosystems like tropical rainforests and deserts. Now, it’s time to zoom in closer to home. We are going to explore the UK’s terrestrial ecosystems. "Terrestrial" simply means "on land."

Even though the UK is a relatively small island, it has a huge variety of landscapes. From the purple-covered hills of the Scottish Highlands to the marshy wetlands of East Anglia, our ecosystems are unique because of our climate and geology. Let's dive in!

Why does the UK look the way it does?

The type of ecosystem found in a specific part of the UK isn't random. It is decided by two main factors:

1. Climate: The UK has a temperate maritime climate. This means it is generally mild and wet. However, the West is usually wetter and the North is usually colder. This affects what can grow where.

2. Geology (Rocks and Soils): Some rocks, like limestone, create alkaline soils, while others, like granite, create acidic soils. Plants are very picky about the soil they grow in!

Did you know? Most of the UK used to be covered in a giant "wildwood" of oak and birch trees thousands of years ago. Most of what we see today has been shaped by human activity over centuries.

The Four Key UK Ecosystems

For your GCSE, you need to be familiar with the main types of distinctive ecosystems found across the UK. These are moorlands, heathlands, wetlands, and woodlands.

1. Moorlands (Upland Ecosystems)

Moorlands are found in high-altitude areas (uplands) where it is cold and rainy. You’ll find them in places like the Pennines, Dartmoor, and the Scottish Highlands.

  • Characteristics: The soil is usually acidic and "peaty" (waterlogged and low in oxygen).
  • Plants: Not many trees can survive the wind and cold. Instead, you see lots of heather, gorse, and bracken.
  • Animals: Look out for red grouse, buzzards, and deer.

2. Heathlands (Lowland Ecosystems)

These might look a bit like moorlands, but they are found in warmer, lower areas, mostly in the South of England (like the New Forest or Surrey Heaths).

  • Characteristics: They grow on sandy, free-draining soils that don't have many nutrients.
  • Plants: Heather and gorse are common here too, along with small shrubs.
  • Animals: Heathlands are vital for rare reptiles like sand lizards and smooth snakes.

3. Wetlands (Waterlogged Ecosystems)

Wetlands occur where the water table is at or near the surface of the land. Common types in the UK include fens and bogs. You can find them in places like the Somerset Levels or the Cambridgeshire Fens.

  • Characteristics: The ground is permanently saturated (soaked). This prevents dead plants from rotting properly, which creates peat.
  • Plants: Reeds, mosses (like Sphagnum moss), and water lilies.
  • Why they matter: Wetlands are amazing "carbon sinks." They store \(CO_{2}\) and help prevent global warming!

4. Woodlands

While we cover Deciduous Woodlands in more depth in another chapter, it’s important to know that woodlands cover about \(13\%\) of the UK land area today.

  • Deciduous: Trees like Oak and Beech that lose their leaves in winter. Found mostly in the lowlands.
  • Coniferous: Evergreen trees with needles (like Pine and Spruce). These are often found in colder, northern areas or in "plantations" where they are grown for timber.

How Humans Have Changed UK Ecosystems

It is very rare to find a "natural" ecosystem in the UK. Almost everything you see has been influenced by humans:

  • Agriculture: We have cleared forests to make room for crops and grazing animals (like sheep and cows).
  • Urbanisation: Building cities and roads has fragmented (broken up) many habitats.
  • Forestry: We plant large "monocultures" (one type of tree) of coniferous trees for wood, which can reduce biodiversity.
  • Drainage: Many wetlands were drained in the past to create flat, fertile farmland.

Common Mistake to Avoid: Don't confuse Moorlands and Heathlands! Remember that Moorlands are the rugged, chilly ones in the mountains/uplands, while Heathlands are the sandy, warmer ones in the lowlands.
