1. Why Do We Test Fitness?

2. The Official Fitness Tests
For your Edexcel GCSE PE exam, there is a "closed list" of tests. This means these are the only tests you need to know for the written paper. Each test measures a specific component of fitness.
Cardiovascular Fitness (Aerobic Endurance)
Test 1: Cooper 12-minute tests (Run or Swim)
The Protocol: You run or swim as far as you can in exactly \(12\) minutes. The distance is then recorded.

Power
Test: Vertical Jump Test
The Protocol: Stand sideways to a wall, reach up, and mark your standing height. Then, jump as high as you can and mark the wall at the peak of your jump. The distance between the two marks is your score.

Flexibility
Test: Sit and Reach Test
The Protocol: Sit with your legs straight and feet against a sit-and-reach box. Reach forward as far as possible and hold for two seconds.

4. Normative Data: How Do You Compare?
Once you have your score (e.g., "I ran \(2400m\) in the Cooper Test"), what does it actually mean? To find out, we use Normative Data Tables.
Normative Data is a set of results collected from a large group of people. It allows you to compare your score against the "norm" for your age and gender. Ratings usually range from:
- Excellent
- Above Average
- Average
- Below Average
- Poor
Analysing the Data:
When you look at a table, you are interpreting the data. If a \(16\)-year-old boy runs \(30m\) in \(4.2\) seconds and the "Excellent" threshold is \(4.0\) seconds, he can evaluate that his speed is "Above Average" but not yet "Excellent."
Did you know? Normative data tables are different for males and females because of physiological differences (like muscle mass and lung capacity). Always make sure you are looking at the right table!
