In the early days of psychology, scientists couldn't look inside a living brain. They had to wait for something to go wrong—like an injury—to see how it changed a person’s behavior.1. Moving from 'Whole Brain' to 'Specific Parts'
Originally, people weren't sure if different parts of the brain did different things. Over time, psychology has moved toward the idea of localisation of function. This is the idea that specific areas of the brain (like the frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes) have specific jobs. Example: We now know the occipital lobe is for vision and the cerebellum is for movement and balance. We didn't always have this "map" of the brain!2. The Evolution of Case Studies (The Phineas Gage Example)
One of the most famous examples of how psychology changed is the case of Phineas Gage.Then: In \(1848\), when an iron rod went through Gage's head, doctors could only observe his personality changes (he became rude and unreliable) and guess which part of his brain was damaged.
Now (The Change): Fast forward to Damasio et al. (1994). Using modern technology and computer modeling, researchers were able to look at Gage’s skull and reconstruct exactly where the damage was. They confirmed it was the pre-frontal cortex. This shows how psychology has changed from simple observation to using scientific evidence to explain behavior.
