Have you ever seen something happen and then realized later that your friend remembered it totally differently? In Criminological Psychology, this is a huge deal. An eye-witness identification can be the difference between a person going to jail or going home. In this chapter, we explore why our memories aren't like video cameras and what factors can make an eye-witness "unreliable."

1. Is Memory a Video Recording?

Before we dive in, remember from Unit 1 (Cognitive Psychology) that memory is reconstructive. We don't just "play back" events; we rebuild them using schemas (mental shortcuts). Because of this, our memories are easily influenced by things that happen after the event.

2. Factors Affecting Reliability

The Edexcel syllabus requires you to understand four specific factors that can "mess with" an eye-witness's memory. Let’s break them down:

A. Post-Event Information

This is information given to a witness after the event has happened. It can come from news reports, talking to other witnesses, or even the way a police officer asks a question.

  • Leading Questions: If a lawyer asks, "How fast was the car going when it smashed into the pole?" the word "smashed" suggests a high speed. This can actually change the witness's memory of the event!
  • The Classic Study Connection: In Loftus and Palmer (1974), students who heard the word "smashed" estimated higher speeds and were more likely to "remember" seeing broken glass that wasn't actually there.

Quick Tip: Think of post-event info like adding a filter to a photo. Once the filter is saved, it’s hard to remember what the original "raw" photo looked like!

B. Weapons Focus

If a criminal is holding a gun or a knife, where do you think the witness looks? Most likely, they look at the weapon, not the person’s face.

  • This is called "tunnel vision." The witness focuses so much on the threat (the weapon) that they fail to process other details, like the offender's eye color or height.
  • This makes identification much less reliable because the witness simply didn't "encode" the face properly.

C. 'Other Race' Effect (ORE)

Psychologists have found that people are generally better at recognizing faces of their own race than faces of other races.
Note: This isn't about prejudice; it's about familiarity.

  • If you grow up surrounded by people of your own race, your brain becomes an "expert" at spotting the tiny differences in those faces.
  • When looking at a different race, the brain might struggle to pick out the unique features needed for an accurate ID.

D. Stress and Trauma

Being a witness to a crime is scary. You might think "I'll never forget that face," but high levels of stress can actually impair memory.

  • The Inverted-U Hypothesis: A little bit of stress makes us alert and might help memory. But once stress becomes too high (trauma), our ability to take in information drops significantly.
  • The Contemporary Study Connection: Valentine and Mesout (2009) tested visitors to the London Dungeon. They found that those who were the most stressed (highest heart rate) were the least accurate at identifying an actor they had met in the labyrinth.

3. Researching Eye-Witness Memory

How do psychologists study this? They usually use Experiments. In your exam, you might be asked about the methods used in this area.

Laboratory Experiments

Most eye-witness research (like Loftus and Palmer) happens in a lab.
Strengths: High control over extraneous variables. We can be sure the "leading question" caused the memory change, not something else.
Weaknesses: Low ecological validity. Watching a video of a car crash in a classroom is much less stressful than seeing one in real life.

Field Experiments

Some studies happen in real-world settings (like Valentine and Mesout at the London Dungeon).
Strengths: Higher ecological validity because the stress and surroundings are real.
Weaknesses: Harder to control. Different witnesses might have been distracted by different things in the environment.

4. Evaluating Reliability (The "Big Picture")

When you are writing an 8-mark or 12-mark answer, you need to evaluate. Here is a simple "Checklist" for evaluating eye-witness identification:

  • Reliability: Can we trust it? Factors like weapons focus and stress suggest we should be very careful.
  • Application: How does this help society? This research led to the Cognitive Interview (which you will study in another chapter) to help police get better information.
  • Ethics: Is it okay to stress out participants in a study just to test their memory? Researchers must follow the BPS Code of Ethics.
