What is a Statistical Investigative Question?

The Three Gold Pillars of a Good Question
To determine if a question is valid for a statistical investigation, check it against these three criteria:
- Answerable with Data: You must be able to collect information (data) to find the answer.
- Anticipates Variability: You expect the data you collect to be different from one individual to the next.

Why? To answer this, you need to collect data from many students. You anticipate variability because some students sleep 4 hours while others sleep 8. You are also looking for a "typical" value (like a mean \( \mu \) or median) for a specific population.

Categorical vs. Quantitative Questions

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

- The "Deterministic" Trap: Avoid questions that can be answered by looking up a definition or a fixed law of science (e.g., "At what temperature does water boil?").
