Welcome to the World of "El Ciberespacio"!
Hola! Welcome to your study notes for one of the most relevant topics in your AQA AS Spanish course: El ciberespacio (Cyberspace). Because we use technology every single day, you already know the concepts—now we just need to give you the Spanish tools to talk about them like a pro. This vocabulary is essential for Paper 1 (Listening and Reading), Paper 2 (Translation), and especially your Paper 3 speaking cards.
In this chapter, we will break down the vocabulary into the three main areas required by your syllabus: the influence of the internet, the pros and cons of social media, and the role of smartphones.
1. La influencia de internet (The Influence of the Internet)
To discuss how the internet has changed our lives, you need the "nuts and bolts" of tech vocabulary. Don't worry if these seem like a lot; many Spanish tech terms are similar to English!
Key Nouns
- La red / El internet: The internet (la red literally means "the web").
- El internauta: The internet user (a very "exam-style" word to use instead of just persona).
- El sitio web / La página web: The website.
- El buscador: The search engine (like Google).
- El enlace / El vínculo: The link.
- La contraseña: The password.
- La herramienta: The tool.
Key Verbs
- Navegar por la red: To surf the web.
- Descargar: To download.
- Subir: To upload.
- Borrar: To delete.
- Hacer clic: To click.
- Ahorrar tiempo: To save time.
Quick Tip: Remember that subir also means "to go up" or "to get on a bus," and descargar comes from cargar (to load/charge). Think of "loading up" and "unloading" files!
2. Las redes sociales: beneficios y peligros (Social Media: Benefits and Dangers)
The AQA examiners love to ask you to weigh up the "pros and cons." You will need vocabulary for both the positive and negative sides of social media.
The Vocabulary of Socializing
- La cuenta: The account.
- El perfil: The profile.
- Los seguidores: Followers.
- Mandar / Enviar un mensaje: To send a message.
- Compartir: To share.
- Colgar una foto: To post/upload a photo (literally "to hang" a photo).
- Actualizar: To update.
Beneficios (The Good Stuff)
- Estar en contacto con: To be in touch with.
- Una manera de expresarse: A way to express oneself.
- Fomentar la comunicación: To encourage/promote communication.
- Entretenerse: To entertain oneself.
- Gratis / Gratuito: Free of charge.
Peligros (The Risks)
- El acoso cibernético (Ciberacoso): Cyberbullying.
- El robo de identidad: Identity theft.
- La pérdida de privacidad: Loss of privacy.
- Los desconocidos: Strangers.
- Los bulos / Las noticias falsas: Fake news.
- El fraude: Fraud.
Did you know? Spanish speakers often use the verb chatear. It comes directly from the English "to chat," but it is specifically used for chatting online or via apps!
3. Los móviles inteligentes en nuestra sociedad (Smartphones in Society)
The third part of the syllabus focuses on the devices themselves and how they affect our daily behavior.
Devices and Hardware
- El móvil / El celular: The mobile phone (celular is more common in Latin America).
- El móvil inteligente: The smartphone.
- La tableta: The tablet.
- La pantalla: The screen.
- El teclado: The keyboard.
- La batería: The battery.
Usage and Habits
- Estar enganchado/a: To be hooked/addicted (a very useful phrase for speaking exams!).
- Depender de: To depend on.
- Inalámbrico: Wireless.
- Aislado/a: Isolated.
- Desbloquear: To unlock.
Common Mistake to Avoid: Don't confuse la red (the network/web) with el red (which doesn't exist!). It is always feminine: la red social, las redes.
4. Functions: How to Use This Vocabulary
In your exam, you won't just list words; you’ll need to use them in sentences. Here are some structures that fit perfectly with this chapter:
Expressing Necessity (Using "Hay que")
To talk about internet safety, use hay que (one must/it is necessary to):
"Hay que proteger la privacidad en las redes sociales."
(One must protect privacy on social networks.)
Expressing Opinions
Since this chapter involves debate, use these phrases (and see the "Expressing and justifying opinions" chapter for more):
- Desde mi punto de vista... (From my point of view...)
- Lo bueno / malo es que... (The good/bad thing is that...)
- Me parece que... (It seems to me that...)
Using the Present Continuous
To describe what people are doing right now with technology:
"Muchos jóvenes están usando sus móviles durante la cena."
(Many young people are using their phones during dinner.)
Quick Review: Top 5 Must-Know Words
If you remember nothing else, remember these five terms:
- Las redes sociales (Social media)
- Los internautas (Internet users)
- Ciberacoso (Cyberbullying)
- Compartir (To share)
- Estar enganchado (To be hooked)
Don't worry if this seems tricky at first! You are already an expert on technology in English. You are simply learning the Spanish labels for things you already do every day. Keep practicing by switching your phone's language to Spanish—it’s the best way to see this vocabulary in action!
For more on how to debate these topics, check out the chapter on "Expressing and justifying opinions; agreeing and disagreeing."
