Mastering Conjunctions and Paired Structures in GCSE Chinese (8673)
Welcome to one of the most rewarding areas of GCSE Mandarin grammar! Conjunctions are the "sentence glue" of Chinese. Learning to use paired structures will instantly boost your writing and speaking marks, moving your sentences from simple bullet points to fluent, natural-sounding paragraphs.
Don't worry if word order feels a bit unusual at first. Chinese follows very logical, consistent patterns. Once you memorize the blueprint for each pair, you will be able to construct complex sentences with confidence across all four exam papers (Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing).
---1. The Golden Rule of Chinese Paired Conjunctions
In English, we avoid using two conjunctions together in the same sentence. For example, we say: "Although it rained, we went out" (NOT "Although it rained, but we went out"). Similarly, we say: "Because I was tired, I slept" (NOT "Because I was tired, so I slept").
In Mandarin, the rule is the exact opposite!
Mandarin loves balance. Paired conjunctions almost always work as a team across two clauses. If you open with the first half, you must close with the second half.
2. Foundation Tier Paired Structures
These three structures are essential for both Foundation and Higher tier students. Mastering them guarantees that you can express contrast, reasons, and conditions clearly.
A. 虽然……但是…… (suīrán ... dànshì ...) — "Although ..., (but) still ..."
Function: Used to show a contrast or concession between two ideas.
Grammar Pattern:
虽然 + Clause 1, 但是 + Clause 2
or:
Subject 1 + 虽然 + Predicate 1, Subject 2 + 但是 + Predicate 2
Core Example:
虽然汉语很难,但是很有意思。
(suīrán hànyǔ hěn nán, dànshì hěn yǒu yìsi.)
"Although Chinese is difficult, it is very interesting."
Top Tip: Never drop 但是 (dànshì)! In GCSE writing, omitting 但是 after 虽然 is one of the most common mistakes caused by translating directly from English.
B. 因为……所以…… (yīnwèi ... suǒyǐ ...) — "Because ..., therefore / so ..."
Function: Used to connect a cause (reason) with an effect (result).
Grammar Pattern:
因为 + Reason Clause, 所以 + Result Clause
Core Example:
因为明天下雨,所以我们不去公园。
(yīnwèi míngtiān xià yǔ, suǒyǐ wǒmen bù qù gōngyuán.)
"Because it will rain tomorrow, we are not going to the park."
Step-by-Step Breakdown:
1. State the reason after 因为 (明天下雨 = it will rain tomorrow).
2. Place a comma.
3. State the consequence after 所以 (我们不去公园 = we are not going to the park).
C. 如果……就…… (rúguǒ ... jiù ...) — "If ..., then ..."
Function: Used to express a condition and its likely result. (Note: You may also see 要是……就…… yàoshi ... jiù ... in reading and listening tasks; it means the exact same thing!)
Grammar Pattern:
如果 + Condition Clause, Subject + 就 + Verb Phrase
Core Example:
如果明天下雪,我们就去滑雪。
(rúguǒ míngtiān xià xuě, wǒmen jiù qù huáxuě.)
"If it snows tomorrow, we will go skiing."
Word Order Alert for 就 (jiù):
就 is an adverb, which means it must sit after the subject and right before the verb in the second clause.
Correct: 如果下雨,我们就不去。
Incorrect: *如果下雨,就我们不去。
Quick Review: Foundation Conjunctions
• 虽然……但是…… = Although ..., but ... (Concession)
• 因为……所以…… = Because ..., so ... (Cause and Effect)
• 如果……就…… = If ..., then ... (Condition, with 就 placed before the verb)
3. Higher Tier Paired Structures
Using these structures in your speaking and extended writing tasks helps demonstrate the sentence variety and complexity needed for top grades.
A. 不但……而且…… (búdàn ... érqiě ...) — "Not only ..., but also ..."
Function: Used to add extra information or emphasize multiple qualities/actions.
Pattern 1: Same Subject (One person doing two things)
When one person or object does both things, put the Subject first, followed by 不但.
Subject + 不但 + Predicate 1, 而且 + Predicate 2
Example (Same Subject):
他不但会说汉语,而且会说法语。
(tā búdàn huì shuō hànyǔ, érqiě huì shuō fǎyǔ.)
"He not only can speak Chinese, but can also speak French."
Pattern 2: Different Subjects (Two different people doing something)
When there are two different subjects, put 不但 at the very beginning of the sentence.
不但 + Subject 1 + Predicate 1, 而且 + Subject 2 + Predicate 2
Example (Different Subjects):
不但我喜欢运动,而且我弟弟也喜欢运动。
(búdàn wǒ xǐhuan yùndòng, érqiě wǒ dìdi yě xǐhuan yùndòng.)
"Not only do I like sports, but my younger brother also likes sports."
B. 除了……以外…… (chúle ... yǐwài ...) — "Besides / Except ..."
Function: This versatile structure has two distinct meanings depending on which helper word appears in the second clause.
1. Inclusive Meaning: "In addition to / As well as..."
Pair with 也 (yě - also) or 还 (hái - in addition/still).
Pattern: 除了 + Noun/Phrase + 以外, Subject + 还 / 也 + Verb Phrase
Example (Inclusive):
除了英语以外,我还会说中文。
(chúle yīngyǔ yǐwài, wǒ hái huì shuō zhōngwén.)
"Besides English, I can also speak Chinese." (I speak both!)
2. Exclusive Meaning: "Except for..."
Pair with 都 (dōu - all).
Pattern: 除了 + Noun/Phrase + 以外, Subject + 都 + Verb Phrase
Example (Exclusive):
除了小明以外,大家都去了。
(chúle xiǎomíng yǐwài, dàjiā dōu qù le.)
"Except for Xiao Ming, everyone went." (Xiao Ming did not go!)
Memory Trick:
• 还 / 也 = Adding more to the list (Inclusion).
• 都 = Grouping everyone else together while leaving one out (Exclusion).
C. 越……越…… (yuè ... yuè ...) — Proportional & Progressive Change
Function: Used to express that one change leads to another, or that something is developing continuously over time.
Pattern A: "The more [A], the more [B]" (Correlative Change)
Subject + 越 + Verb/Adjective 1 + 越 + Verb/Adjective 2
Examples:
汉语越学越有意思。
(hànyǔ yuè xué yuè yǒu yìsi.)
"The more one studies Chinese, the more interesting it gets."
越快越好。
(yuè kuài yuè hǎo.)
"The faster, the better."
Pattern B: "More and more..." (Progressive Change over Time)
When combined into 越来越, it means something is increasing steadily.
Subject + 越来越 + Adjective / Emotion Verb
Example:
天气越来越冷。
(tiānqì yuè lái yuè lěng.)
"The weather is getting colder and colder."
Common Mistake Alert:
Never use intensifiers like 很 (hěn) or 非常 (fēicháng) directly after 越来越!
Correct: 天气越来越冷。
Incorrect: *天气越来越很冷。 (越来越 already contains the intensifying meaning).
Quick Review: Higher Conjunctions
• 不但……而且…… = Not only ..., but also ... (Pay attention to subject placement!)
• 除了……以外,……还/也…… = In addition to A, also B (Inclusion)
• 除了……以外,……都…… = Except for A, all B (Exclusion)
• 越……越…… = The more ..., the more ...
• 越来越 + Adj = More and more [adjective] (Do NOT add 很!)
4. Summary of Common Exam Pitfalls
Before you complete your writing or speaking assessment, run through this quick checklist:
1. Did you include both parts of the pair?
Always check that 虽然 has its 但是, and 因为 has its 所以.
2. Is 就 (jiù) in the right spot?
Remember: Subject + 就 + Verb (e.g. 我们就去, NOT *就我们去).
3. Where is the subject in 不但……而且……?
If it is the same person: Subject + 不但... 而且...
If they are different people: 不但 + Subject 1... 而且 + Subject 2...
4. Did you match 除了……以外 with the right partner?
Use 还 / 也 for "as well as", and use 都 for "except".
5. Is there an extra 很 after 越来越?
Always write 越来越 + Adjective (e.g. 越来越好), never add 很 or 非常.
