Application software (often just called "apps" or "programs") is software designed to help users carry out specific tasks, such as writing an essay, editing a photo, or managing a bank account.

In the CCEA specification, application software is grouped into three main categories:

A. General-Purpose Software

This is "off-the-shelf" software that can be used for a wide variety of daily tasks.

Examples: Word processors (e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Docs), spreadsheet software (e.g., Microsoft Excel), presentation software (e.g., Microsoft PowerPoint), and database management systems (e.g., Microsoft Access).
Advantages: Relatively cheap, thoroughly tested, readily available, lots of user support and online tutorials available.

This is software designed to perform one single, specific task exceptionally well.

Examples: Payroll systems (calculates wages and tax), Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software used by architects, accountancy software, or photo-editing software.
Advantages: Tailored specifically for a particular job, saving time and improving accuracy for that task.
Disadvantages: Cannot easily be adapted for other general tasks.

C. Bespoke (Custom-Written) Software

This is software made-to-measure specifically for one customer or organisation from scratch.

Examples: Software used by the military for missile guidance, air traffic control systems, or a hospital's unique patient tracking system.
Advantages: Meets the user's exact requirements; can be modified and expanded as the business grows; gives a competitive edge over rivals.
Disadvantages: Very expensive to develop; takes months or years to create; may contain bugs and errors initially because it has not been tested by thousands of users.
