1. The Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation
To understand reproduction, we first look at the monthly cycle that prepares a woman's body for potential pregnancy.
• The Menstrual Cycle: A regular natural cycle that typically lasts 28 days (though it can vary from person to person).
• Ovulation: The release of a mature egg (also called an ovum) from one of the ovaries. In an average 28-day cycle, ovulation happens around Day 14.
• The Uterine Lining: During the cycle, the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) thickens with blood vessels to prepare a soft, nourishing bed in case an egg is fertilised.
Did you know? An egg survives for only about 12 to 24 hours after release, making the window around Day 14 the key time for fertilisation to take place.

2. The Journey of Conception: From Single Cell to Baby
Conception is a step-by-step journey that turns two single cells into a developing baby.
Step 1: Fertilisation
Fertilisation occurs when a male sex cell (sperm) joins together with a female sex cell (ovum / egg).
• Where it happens: Fertilisation takes place in the fallopian tube (also known as the oviduct).
• Exam Alert: A very common mistake is writing that fertilisation happens in the uterus. Remember, sperm meets egg in the fallopian tube, not the uterus!
Step 2: Implantation
Once fertilised, the new cell begins dividing as it travels down the fallopian tube toward the uterus. Once it arrives, it settles and embeds itself into the thickened, blood-rich lining of the uterus. This embedding process is called implantation.
The Three Stages of Development
The CCEA specification requires you to know the correct names for the baby at different stages:
• Zygote: The single cell formed the very moment fertilisation occurs.
• Embryo: The term used for the developing baby from implantation up to approximately 8 weeks.
• Foetus: The term used from 8 weeks until birth, by which time the major body organs have formed.
Memory Trick: Think of the alphabetical order of growth: Zygote \(\rightarrow\) Embryo \(\rightarrow\) Foetus (Z comes first at fertilisation, then E for early weeks, then F for the final stages up to birth).

3. Hormones in Reproduction

• Oestrogen: Responsible for the development of female secondary sexual characteristics and plays an essential role in thickening the lining of the uterus during the menstrual cycle.
• Progesterone: Known as the "pregnancy hormone." Its main job is to maintain the thick lining of the uterus. Progesterone levels stay high throughout pregnancy to prevent the lining from shedding (which would cause a period / menstruation).
• HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin): This hormone is produced by the developing pregnancy shortly after implantation. It is the specific hormone that is detected by home pregnancy tests in the mother's urine.

4. Genetics, Chromosomes and Inheritance
When conception happens, instructions for how the baby will grow and look are passed down from both parents.
Chromosomes and Gametes
• Body Cells: Every normal human body cell contains 46 chromosomes, arranged in 23 pairs.
• Gametes (Sex Cells): Sperm and egg cells are called gametes. Each gamete contains only 23 single chromosomes (half the normal amount).
• When the sperm (\(23\) chromosomes) unites with the egg (\(23\) chromosomes), the new zygote has the complete set of \(46\) chromosomes (\(23 + 23 = 46\)).
Inherited Characteristics
Genes located on these chromosomes carry the information for inherited characteristics. These are traits passed directly from parents to their child, such as natural eye colour, hair type, and facial features.
Sex Determination: Boy or Girl?
The 23rd pair of chromosomes determines the biological sex of the baby:
• Female sex chromosomes: XX
• Male sex chromosomes: XY
The mother's egg always carries an X chromosome. The father's sperm can carry either an X or a Y chromosome. Therefore, the father's sperm determines the sex of the baby:
• If an X-carrying sperm fertilises the egg: \(X + X = XX\) (Female baby)
• If a Y-carrying sperm fertilises the egg: \(X + Y = XY\) (Male baby)
Multiple Births (Twins)
• Identical Twins (Monozygotic): Occurs when one egg is fertilised by one sperm, and this single fertilised egg then splits into two separate embryos. They share identical genes, look alike, and are always the same sex.
• Non-identical / Fraternal Twins (Dizygotic): Occurs when two separate eggs are released and fertilised by two separate sperm. They are no more genetically alike than ordinary brothers and sisters and can be different sexes.
