Developing Skilled Performance: Factors Underpinning the Learning of Skills

By the end of these notes, you will understand how skills are classified, what makes an elite performer look so good, how our brains process sporting actions, and the best ways to practice.


1. Foundation Check: Skill vs. Ability

Before jumping into skill learning, let's clear up one of the most common mistakes students make in exams: confusing ability with skill.

Ability: These are innate, natural traits you are born with. They are largely genetic and provide the foundation for movement (for example: natural balance, reaction time, or coordination).
Skill: This is learned through practice, instruction, and experience. A skill is the learned ability to bring about predetermined results with maximum certainty (for example: taking a penalty kick in football or performing a gymnastics vault).

Memory Trick: You are born with an ability, but you build a skill through training!


2. Classification of Skills (The Three Continua)

In PE, skills are not simply "one thing or another." Instead, we place them on a continuum (a sliding scale from one extreme to another). Depending on the situation or drill, a skill might sit closer to the middle rather than right at the end.

A. The Open–Closed Continuum (Environmental Influence)

This continuum looks at how much the surrounding environment (opponents, teammates, weather, playing surface) affects the performance of the skill.

Open Skill: Performed in an unstable, unpredictable environment. The performer must constantly react and adapt to external factors.
Sporting Examples: Making a pass in football during open play, executing a tackle in rugby, or returning a smash in badminton.
Closed Skill: Performed in a stable, predictable environment. The performer is in full control of the timing and execution.
Sporting Examples: A gymnastics vault, a free throw in basketball, or a javelin throw.

Exam Tip: Avoid saying a skill is purely open or purely closed without explaining the environment. A pass against a live defender is open, but practicing the exact same pass against a static cone is more closed!

B. The Discrete–Serial–Continuous Continuum (Continuity of the Movement)

This continuum looks at whether the movement has a distinct start and finish.

Discrete Skill: Has a clear, distinct beginning and end. It is a single, brief movement.
Sporting Examples: A golf swing, a penalty kick in football, or a shot put throw.
Serial Skill: A sequence of discrete skills linked together in a specific order to create a larger, complex movement.
Sporting Examples: A gymnastics floor routine, a triple jump (hop, step, and jump), or a cricket bowling action.
Continuous Skill: Has no distinct beginning or end. The movement is cyclical, meaning the end of one movement cycle flows directly into the start of the next.
Sporting Examples: Running, swimming, or cycling.

C. The Gross–Fine Continuum (Muscular Involvement)

This continuum looks at the size of the muscle groups used and the level of precision required.

Gross Skill: Involves large muscle groups and total body movement. These skills are often powerful and dynamic.
Sporting Examples: Throwing a shot put, performing a high jump, or kicking a rugby ball.
Fine Skill: Involves small muscle groups and requires high levels of precision and hand-eye coordination.
Sporting Examples: Throwing a dart, putting in golf, or firing an arrow in archery.

3. Characteristics of a Skilled Performer

When you watch a world-class athlete, their movements look effortless compared to a beginner (novice). CCEA requires you to use specific technical terms to describe these qualities.

Use the memory aid "FACED" (or "CAFÉ-G") to remember the five key characteristics:

Fluency: Movements are smooth, well-coordinated, and flow naturally from one phase to the next without jerky stops or hesitations.
Aesthetic: The performance looks neat, technically correct, and pleasing to the eye.
Consistency: The performer can repeat the skill successfully at a high standard time after time.
Efficiency: There is no wasted energy. The performer achieves the desired result with minimal physical effort.
Goal-Directed: The performer is focused on a clear outcome. They know exactly what they want to achieve and adapt their play to succeed.

Common Mistake to Avoid: Never use everyday, vague words like "good," "fast," or "strong" in your exam answers. Always use the official terms: fluency, aesthetic, consistency, efficiency, and goal-directed.


4. The Information Processing Model

Every time you perform a skill in sport, your brain works like a computer system, taking in information, making a choice, performing the movement, and reviewing the outcome. This is known as the Information Processing Model (sometimes called the "Black Box" model).

The Four Key Stages:

1. Input: Information is gathered from the sporting environment using your senses (mainly sight and sound).
Example: A goalkeeper sees the striker preparing to shoot and hears their teammate calling out.

2. Decision Making: The brain processes the input, compares it with past experiences stored in memory, and selects the best motor response.
Example: The goalkeeper decides to dive to the bottom-right corner based on the striker's body shape.

3. Output: The nervous system sends messages to the muscles to physically execute the chosen movement.
Example: The goalkeeper dives across the goal line to block the ball.

4. Feedback: Information received about the performance during or after the movement. This can be internal (intrinsic), such as the physical feeling of making contact, or external (extrinsic), such as seeing the ball go wide or hearing the coach give praise.

Crucial Exam Detail: Always remember that Feedback loops back into Input for the next action! If the goalkeeper missed the ball, that feedback becomes new input for their next save attempt.


5. Types of Practice

How a coach designs training sessions depends on the type of skill being learned, the fitness of the athlete, and safety considerations.

A. Massed Practice

What it is: Continuous practice with very few or no rest breaks.
Best used for: Simple, discrete skills, or for experienced, highly motivated athletes.
Example: Practicing 50 basketball free throws in a row without stopping.

B. Distributed Practice

What it is: Practice sessions broken up with rest intervals, mental rehearsal, or different training activities.
Best used for: Complex skills, dangerous activities, or beginner performers who fatigue quickly.
Example: Practicing a gymnastics somersault three times, pausing to receive coach feedback and rest, and then repeating.

C. Variable Practice

What it is: Practicing a skill in a wide range of different situations, setups, and game-like scenarios.
Best used for: Open skills where the environment changes constantly.
Example: Practicing passing in football using 3v2, 4v3, and small-sided match drills with varying defender pressure.

D. Fixed Practice

What it is: Repeating the same skill over and over in the exact same stable environment (drill work).
Best used for: Closed skills where repetition helps groove the correct movement pattern.
Example: Repeatedly practicing a tennis serve from the same position on the court into a target zone.

Connecting Practice to Classification: Remember that Variable Practice = Open Skills (adapting to change), while Fixed Practice = Closed Skills (perfecting a set routine)!
