Hello! Welcome to your study notes on Bias. In the IB Psychology course, Bias is one of the six fundamental Concepts that act like a lens through which we view everything else. Whether we are looking at how the brain works or how we behave in relationships, bias is always lurking in the background. Understanding it is key to becoming "psychologically literate," which is the main goal of your DP journey!

Don't worry if this seems tricky at first! Many people think bias just means "being unfair," but in psychology, it's a bit more scientific than that. Let’s break it down together.

What is Bias?

In the simplest terms, Bias is a systematic distortion or inclination that influences our understanding, our research, or our behavior. It happens when our "mental settings" or our research methods are tilted in one direction, preventing us from seeing the full, objective truth.

Psychologists look at bias in two main ways:
1. Cognitive Bias: How our own thinking patterns can lead to errors in judgment.
2. Research Bias: How the way we design or carry out a study can "taint" the results.

1. Bias in Research Methodology

Since you will be designing your own Research Proposal and evaluating unseen studies in Paper 2, you need to know these common types of research bias like the back of your hand.

A. Researcher Bias

This happens when the person conducting the study unintentionally influences the results to fit their own expectations.
Example: If a researcher believes a certain drug helps with Health and Well-being, they might accidentally smile more at the patients taking the drug, making those patients feel better regardless of the medicine!

B. Participant Bias

This occurs when the people being studied change their behavior because they know they are being watched.
Social Desirability Bias: Participants act in a way they think makes them look "good" or "normal." For instance, in a survey about Human Relationships, someone might lie and say they never argue with their partner because they want to seem like a perfect spouse.

C. Sampling Bias

This happens when the group of people chosen for a study (the sample) doesn't represent the wider population of interest.
Example: If you only study university students to explain Human Development across the entire lifespan, your results are biased because they don't include children or the elderly.

If a study has high bias, it has low credibility. Credibility is the "trustworthiness" of the findings. To fix this, researchers use "blind" procedures where neither the researcher nor the participant knows who is in which group.

2. Bias as a Cognitive Concept

In the Cognitive Approach, we study how the brain processes information. Because the world is so complex, our brains use "heuristics" (mental shortcuts). These shortcuts often lead to Cognitive Biases.

Confirmation Bias: This is a big one! It is the tendency to look for, favor, and remember information that supports what we already believe, while ignoring information that contradicts it.
Analogy: It’s like wearing "belief-colored glasses." If you believe all teenagers are lazy, you will notice every sleeping teen you see but walk right past the one working three jobs.

Did you know? Bias can even affect our memory. In the context of Learning and Cognition, our past experiences can bias how we "reconstruct" a memory, leading us to remember things that didn't actually happen!

3. Bias Across the Four Contexts

You need to be able to apply the concept of bias to the four contexts of the curriculum. Here are some brief examples of how bias shows up in each:

  • Health and Well-being: Doctors might have a "gender bias" where they take pain less seriously in women than in men, affecting diagnosis and treatment.
  • Human Development: Researchers might have a "Western bias," assuming that all children develop at the same speed as children in the US or Europe.
  • Human Relationships: "In-group bias" makes us naturally favor people who are like us (our "tribe") and be biased against those we see as outsiders.
  • Learning and Cognition: Our prior knowledge creates a bias in how we learn new things—we often "filter" new information to make it fit what we already know.

4. How to Use Bias in Your Exams

The IB examiners want to see you "think like a psychologist." Here is how you use Bias in different papers:

Paper 1, Section C (Extended Response)

You might get a question like: "Discuss the concept of bias in relation to the study of human relationships." You would then explain a theory (like Social Identity Theory) and show how bias (like in-group favoritism) plays a role in it.

Paper 2, Section B (Evaluation)

You will be given a description of a study you've never seen before. You must evaluate it using concepts.
Step-by-Step Check:
1. Check the sample: Is there Sampling Bias? (e.g., \( n = 5 \) is a very small sample!)
2. Check the method: Could the researcher’s presence have caused Participant Bias?
3. Check the findings: Is the researcher interpreting the data in a way that suggests Confirmation Bias?

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Saying "The study is biased" and stopping there.
The Fix: Always explain why and how it affects the results. Does it make the results less credible? Does it mean we can't apply the findings to other people?

Mistake 2: Confusing Bias with Perspective.
The Fix: Perspective (another concept) is a point of view or a theoretical approach (like the Biological Approach). Bias is a distortion or a "lean" that might hinder objectivity. (See the "Perspective" chapter for more on this!)
