The Language of Comparison
To compare data well, we need to use the right "math words." These words help us explain the differences between groups of things.
More and Greater Than
We use the words more or greater than when one group has a larger number of items than another.
Example: If Group A has \( 8 \) stickers and Group B has \( 5 \) stickers, Group A has more. We can say \( 8 \) is greater than \( 5 \).
Fewer and Less Than
We use the word fewer when we are talking about things we can count (like books or apples) and one group has a smaller number. Less than is used to show that one number is smaller than another.
Example: If there are \( 3 \) dogs and \( 10 \) cats, there are fewer dogs. We say \( 3 \) is less than \( 10 \).

4. Find the difference: Sometimes we want to know how many more one group has. To do this, we take the larger number and subtract the smaller number.
Example: If \( 10 \) students like blue and \( 7 \) students like red, we calculate \( 10 - 7 = 3 \). There are \( 3 \) more students who like blue than red.
