N1 主張理解（長文）: The Editorial Summit
The claim-comprehension long text at N1 is a ~1,000-character 社説 (editorial) or 評論 — abstract, logically layered, written for readers who parse double negatives at speed. Four questions, crowned by the central-claim question. Every skill in this course converges here one last time; this chapter adds the final layer: N1's rhetorical arsenal and the discipline for abstract argument.
1. The N1 Rhetorical Arsenal (Decode on Sight)

果たしてそうだろうか deserves a reflex: whatever opinion directly precedes it has just been marked for demolition. Options quoting that opinion as the writer's view are pre-refuted.
2. The Architecture at Full Scale
A thousand characters ≈ 6-7 paragraphs; the N2 anatomy (hook → common view → concession → turn → case → claim) persists, with two N1 elaborations:
- The double turn: N1 editorials often pivot twice — しかし (against the common view), then もっとも／とはいえ (qualifying their own claim), landing on a REFINED position. The final claim is the refined one; options offering the pre-refinement claim are "80% right" — and wrong.
- The definitional spine: the argument may hang on redefining a word (「豊かさ」とは所有ではなく選択肢の多さである). Once redefined, ALL later statements use the new sense — and one question always tests whether you tracked the redefinition.
3. Worked Skeleton (Compressed)

Central-claim question: options will offer: ① AIで書く仕事は消える (the cited fear — refuted by 果たして), ② 定型文の需要は減る (the concession — true but not the claim), ③ AIを拒むべきだ (anti-もっとも — explicitly disarmed), ④ 書く力の本質は問いを立てる力・書く前の思考にある (the refined claim after the double turn) → ④. The skeleton IS the answer key: cited fear / concession / disarmed extreme / refined thesis — four zones, four options, every time.
4. The Other Three Questions
- Keyword questions (「問いを立てる力」とはどういうことか) → the definitional sentence + its example (会議の違和感に気づき言葉にする).
- Logic questions (筆者が〜と言うのはなぜか) → compress the paragraph between the turn and the example; the reason is the paragraph, not one clause.
- Attitude questions (筆者のAIに対する態度) → the もっとも-zone: not rejection, purposeful use — attitude lives in the qualification, not the thesis.
5. Time Command (the Real N1 Boss)
- Reading owns ~26 questions in the shared 110 minutes — the section most N1 failures die in. Contract: ≤55 minutes for vocab+grammar, leaving ~55 for reading. 主張理解 gets ~12.
- Read the 1,000 characters ONCE with joint-marking (3.5-4 min); never re-read whole paragraphs — jump by zones.
- If collapsing: final paragraph + both turn sentences → claim question → keyword question → salvage.
