N2 概要理解: Gist at Lecture Length
The gist question (5 items at N2) keeps its N3 mechanics — monologue, nothing printed, question revealed AFTER — but the monologues mature into mini-lectures, radio essays, voicemails and business explanations, and a new question flavor joins: 話のテーマは何ですか alongside 一番言いたいことは何ですか. Your running one-sentence summary remains the entire strategy; this chapter trains it against N2 material.
1. The N2 Monologue Types

Voicemails are the sleeper: the question asks 何のために電話しましたか, and the caller buries the purpose behind context (事情説明→本題). The 実は… sentence marks the pivot to purpose.
2. The Two Question Flavors, Separated
- テーマ (topic): the umbrella over EVERYTHING said. Kill options that cover only the example or only the intro. Test: does every paragraph fit under this option?
- 一番言いたいこと (main point): the claim/recommendation after the turn, usually restated at the end. Kill the setup-view and the hardened example (the N3 rules, still golden).
Same monologue, different answers! A talk ABOUT sleep habits (テーマ) may CLAIM that naps improve afternoon work (主張). Hold both in your summary: "topic: ___ / point: ___" — two slots, five words each.
3. Worked Monologue (Compressed)
会社の研修で、講師が話しています。
講師：みなさん、メモを取るとき、聞いたことを全部書こうとしていませんか。実は、それでは大事な話を聞き逃してしまうんです。メモの目的は記録ではなく、あとで思い出すための「鍵」を残すことです。ですから、書くのはキーワードと数字だけで構いません。例えば、日付、金額、固有名詞。それ以外は、相手の目を見て聞くことに集中してください。

Q2: 講師が一番言いたいことは何ですか。→ 全部書かず、キーワードだけをメモして聞くことに集中すべきだ
Architecture check: common practice (全部書く) → 実は turn → point (鍵を残す/キーワードだけ) → example (日付・金額) → restated instruction (集中してください). The echo trap will offer 「日付や金額を書くことが大切」 — the example, hardened. Your own-words summary ("write less, listen more") walks past it untouched.
4. N2-Specific Listening Muscle
- Formal framing verbs mark structure: 〜と言われています (setup), 〜と考えられます (received view), 実は／ところが (turn), つまり／要するに (compression), ぜひ〜てください (recommendation).
- Rhetorical questions (〜のではないでしょうか) assert — count them as claim-sentences.
- Number fog: lectures cite figures; unless the question is about them (it isn't, in 概要理解), let numbers pass and guard the claim slot.
- Options are spoken only — score ○△✗ per option against your two-slot summary as they play.
5. Training Routine
- Daily: one minute of any Japanese podcast/news commentary → pause → say the two slots aloud (テーマ／主張). N2 pace needs ~30 days of this to feel slow.
- Weekly: one voicemail-style drill — have a friend/app leave a rambling message; extract the ONE requested action.
