Mastering 文の文法2(文の組み立て): Sentence Composition

In the JLPT N4 Language Knowledge (Grammar) section, 問題2 文の文法2(文の組み立て) tests your ability to construct syntactically correct and meaningful Japanese sentences. Rather than simply picking an isolated conjugation, you are given a sentence frame with four blanks and four scrambled fragments. Your task is to order the fragments correctly and identify which fragment lands on the star (★) position.

1. The 4-Step Sentence Assembly Strategy

Attempting to guess the full order at once often causes confusion. Use this systematic assembly method:

  • Step 1: Anchor the ends. Look at what is already fixed before the first blank (the topic, subject, or context) and after the fourth blank (the final predicate or sentence-ender).
  • Step 2: Build micro-chunks. Connect fragments that grammatically require each other. Look for particle demands (e.g. を requires a transitive verb), auxiliary combinations (e.g. 〜て requires おく or みる), and stem connectors (e.g. stem + ながら or やすい).
  • Step 3: Bridge the clauses. Arrange your pairs/chunks between the opening anchor and the final predicate. Check that the sentence flows logically.
  • Step 4: Check the ★ position. Read the complete sentence to verify its meaning and grammar, then identify the number of the option located at the ★ mark on your answer sheet.

2. Key Grammatical Building Blocks for Assembly

Sentence composition items frequently rely on high-frequency structural rules to determine fragment order:

Structural FeatureConnection RuleAssembly Clue
Auxiliary て-formsVerb て-form + auxiliary verb〜ておく (in advance), 〜てみる (try doing), 〜てしまう (completion/regret), 〜てある (resulting state). A fragment ending in て must connect directly to the auxiliary fragment.
Evidence & HearsayStem or plain form + auxiliaryStem + そうだ (looks like/about to) vs Plain form + そうだ (hearsay). 〜ようだ, 〜らしい, and 〜かもしれない attach to plain forms.
Time & SequenceConjugated form + time word〜ながら requires verb stem; 〜ところ connects to dictionary, ている, or た form; 〜前に requires dictionary form/noun+の; 〜後で requires た-form/noun+の.
Noun ModificationPlain form predicate + NounVerbs modifying a noun (e.g. 昨日買った本) must precede the noun. Look for a plain verb followed by a noun fragment.
Giving & Receivingて-form + あげる / もらう / くれるAction chains like 〜てくれた or 〜てもらった require the person receiving or giving marked by に or が.
Paired CorrelativesFixed co-occurrencesしか pairs with a negative verb (〜ない); なぜなら pairs with 〜からだ; まだ pairs with 〜ていない.

3. Common Traps in 文の組み立て

  • The First-Blank Trap: Candidates often find the first fragment correctly and impulsively bubble that number. Remember: you are scored purely on which fragment lands on the ★ (frequently the 3rd blank). Always write out the sequence (e.g., 2-1-4-3) before bubbling.
  • Particle Placement: In Japanese, particles follow nouns or clauses—they never precede them. A fragment beginning with a particle like を, に, or で must attach immediately to a noun or nominalized clause before it.
  • Nominalizers (の / こと): Verbs cannot take case particles directly (e.g. *泳ぐが好き). Look for nominalizers to form chunks: [泳ぐ] [こと] [が] [好きです].
  • Background vs. Main Action: In simultaneous action patterns with ながら, the secondary/background action takes ながら, while the primary action serves as the closing predicate.

4. Worked Examples: Step-by-Step Problem Solving

Example 1: Time and Action Framing
弟は __ __ _★_ __ います。
① 聞き ② 音楽を ③ 勉強して ④ ながら

Analysis:
1. Fixed anchors: Starts with 弟は (topic); ends with auxiliary います (requires a て-form verb immediately preceding it).
2. Micro-chunks: 音楽を (②) needs a transitive verb: 聞き (①) fits → [音楽を 聞き]. The suffix ながら (④) requires a verb stem: 聞き (①) fits → [聞き ながら]. Together: ② → ① → ④.
3. Connecting to anchor: The remaining verb 勉強して (③) attaches directly to the final います → [勉強して います].
4. Assembly: 弟は [音楽を(②)] [聞き(①)] [ながら(④)] [勉強して(③)] います。
Star position (3rd slot): ④ (ながら).

Example 2: Evidence and Preparation
雨が __ __ _★_ __ 出かけました。
① 傘を ② 降りそう ③ だったので ④ 持って

Analysis:
1. Fixed anchors: Starts with 雨が; ends with 出かけました.
2. Micro-chunks: 雨が connects to 降りそう (②). The appearance pattern 降りそう is a な-adjective base, which takes だった before reason marker ので → [降りそう だったので] (② → ③). 傘を (①) is the object of 持って (④) → [傘を 持って] (① → ④).
3. Connecting to anchor: The reason clause precedes the main action: 雨が [降りそう(②)] [だったので(③)]、[傘を(①)] [持って(④)] 出かけました。
4. Assembly sequence: ② → ③ → ① → ④.
Star position (3rd slot): ① (傘を).

Example 3: Relative Clause (Noun Modification)
これは __ __ _★_ __ 写真です。
① 母が ② 撮った ③ 旅行の ④ ときに

Analysis:
1. Fixed anchors: Starts with これは; ends with 写真です (noun modifier slot before 写真).
2. Micro-chunks: 旅行 (noun) takes の before ときに → [旅行の ときに] (③ → ④). The verb 撮った (②) requires a subject: 母が (①) → [母が 撮った].
3. Connecting to anchor: The time frame modifies when the photo was taken: [旅行の ときに] [母が 撮った 写真です] or [母が] [旅行の ときに] [撮った 写真です]. In natural syntax, the subject of the modifying clause leads: 母が(①) 旅行の(③) ときに(④) 撮った(②) 写真です。
4. Assembly sequence: ① → ③ → ④ → ②.
Star position (3rd slot): ④ (ときに).

Example 4: Giving and Receiving
誕生日に __ __ _★_ __ 時計をなくしてしまいました。
① もらった ② 友達に ③ 大切な ④ プレゼントで

Analysis:
1. Fixed anchors: Starts with 誕生日に; ends with 時計をなくしてしまいました.
2. Micro-chunks: もらった (①) takes the giver marked with に: [友達に もらった] (② → ①). プレゼントで (④) modifies how it was received: [プレゼントで もらった] (④ → ①). 大切な (③) is a な-adjective modifying the noun 時計 directly before the closing frame.
3. Assembly: 誕生日に [友達に(②)] [プレゼントで(④)] [もらった(①)] [大切な(③)] 時計をなくしてしまいました。
4. Assembly sequence: ② → ④ → ① → ③.
Star position (3rd slot): ① (もらった).

Summary & Test-Day Checklist

  • Never assemble in your head alone: Always write out the numbers corresponding to the blanks in the booklet margin.
  • Search for grammar anchors: Particles (を, に, で) and grammatical endings (て-form, plain-form noun modifier, stem connectors) give away pairings immediately.
  • Read the assembled sentence back: Ensure it makes natural grammatical and logical sense before recording your answer.
  • Double-check the ★: Ensure the bubble you mark matches the number placed on the star blank, not slot 1 or 4.
