N4 課題理解: Tasks That Change Mid-Sentence
The biggest N4 listening block: 8 items of "what must this person do (first/next)?" The N5 skeleton — proposal → complication → revision → verdict — still runs the show, but N4 dialogues get longer, quantities and items get revised mid-call, and questions add a second shape: 何を持っていかなければなりませんか ("what must they bring?"). The official samples are the perfect training data, and this chapter is built around them.
1. The Two Question Shapes
- Next action: このあと、まず何をしますか — track the task list and its edits (your N5 method).
- Bring/buy list: 何を買って帰りますか／何を持っていかなければなりませんか — track an ITEM LIST with live edits: quantities changed, items added, items cancelled.
2. Official Sample 1: The Shopping Call
The classic: a man calls home and asks what to buy on the way back. The list mutates as the call goes:
妻：牛乳を買ってきてくれる？
夫：牛乳ね。1本でいい？
妻：うーん、2本お願い。それから、チーズも。
夫：チーズね、わかった。
妻：あ、チーズはまだあった。牛乳だけでいいよ。
Q: 男の人は何を買って帰りますか。→ 牛乳2本（チーズは取り消し！）
The mechanics to drill: quantities revise upward/downward (1本→2本), and items get cancelled after being confirmed (まだあった→だけでいい). Write the list with your pencil and EDIT it — never trust the first mention. The final state of the list is the answer, and the final state usually forms in the last two lines.
3. Official Sample 2: The Class Trip Briefing
先生：あしたはパン工場の見学です。飲み物を持ってきてください。それから、雨が降るかもしれませんから、かさも持ってきてください。お弁当は工場が用意してくれますから、いりません。カメラは持ってきてはいけません。
Q: 学生はあした、何を持っていかなければなりませんか。→ 飲み物とかさ
Four items are mentioned; only two survive. The kill verbs: 〜が用意してくれます (provided — not your job), いりません (not needed), 〜てはいけません (forbidden). The keep verbs: 持ってきてください, 〜なければなりません. This "mentioned ≠ needed" filter IS the question.
4. The N4 Signal Upgrade

5. Worked Script (Exam Simulation)
会社で女の人と男の人が話しています。男の人はこのあとまず何をしますか。
女：田中さん、3時の会議の準備、お願いできますか。いすを10、並べてください。
男：はい。資料のコピーもしますか。
女：コピーは私がもうしておきました。あ、それから、いすは10じゃなくて、12にしてください。人が増えたので。
男：わかりました。じゃ、まず部屋のかぎを借りてきます。
女：お願いします。
男の人はこのあとまず何をしますか。

Walkthrough: task list: chairs 10 → revised 12; copy → cancelled (私がもうしておきました); and the man himself announces the FIRST step: まず部屋のかぎを借りてきます → ④. Trap ② is the revised quantity — correct data, wrong question: the question asks what he does FIRST, and you can't arrange chairs in a locked room. When the listener announces their own まず, believe them.
6. Training Routine
- Drill number revisions specifically: listen to any N4 dialogue and write every number you hear, crossing out superseded ones. The final-number reflex wins several points per test.
- Rehearse the kill verbs aloud (いりません, もうしました, 〜てくれます, 〜てはいけません) until they trigger the pencil automatically.
- 8 items back-to-back: preview each item's pictures/options in the question gap, name them in Japanese, reset between items.
