So, what exactly is air quality? It's a way of describing how clean or polluted the air is.

Good air quality means the air is clean, clear, and safe to breathe.
Poor air quality means the air has harmful things in it that can make us sick.

Imagine you have two glasses of water. One is clear and clean, and the other is muddy. Which one would you drink? Of course, the clean one! Our lungs feel the same way about the air they take in.

Why Does Poor Air Quality Matter?

Breathing in polluted air can cause health problems, especially for our lungs and heart. It can make existing problems worse or even cause new ones.

Some health problems linked to poor air quality include:

Asthma attacks and other breathing difficulties.
• Irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat.
• Lung and heart diseases over a long period.
• Headaches and dizziness.

3. Ground-level Ozone (\(\text{O}_3\))
Where it comes from: Formed when pollutants from vehicles and factories react with each other in the presence of strong sunlight (photochemical reaction).
Health effect: A powerful irritant that causes coughing, throat irritation, eye irritation, and reduced lung capacity.

4. Carbon Monoxide (\(\text{CO}\))
Where it comes from: Incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels in car engines and furnaces.
Health effect: Reduces the amount of oxygen carried by blood to vital organs. High levels can cause dizziness, unconsciousness, or worse.

5. Suspended Particulates (PM)
What they are: Tiny solid or liquid particles floating in the air.
Respirable Suspended Particulates (\(\text{PM}_{10}\)): Particles with diameter \(\le 10\ \mu\text{m}\).
Fine Suspended Particulates (\(\text{PM}_{2.5}\)): Extremely tiny particles with diameter \(\le 2.5\ \mu\text{m}\).
Where they come from: Vehicle exhausts, burning fuels, and construction sites.
Health effect: \(\text{PM}_{2.5}\) can travel deep into lungs and enter the bloodstream, causing serious respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

The AQHI is reported on a scale of 1 to 10+, grouped into five health risk categories:

1–3: Low Health Risk
Health Advice: Normal outdoor activities for everyone.

4–6: Moderate Health Risk
Health Advice: Most people can continue normal activities. Sensitive individuals with heart or breathing problems may consider reducing strenuous outdoor exercise.

7: High Health Risk
Health Advice: Sensitive groups (children, elderly, and people with heart/lung diseases) should reduce outdoor physical exertion. The general public should reduce strenuous outdoor activities if symptoms appear.

8–10: Very High Health Risk
Health Advice: Sensitive groups should avoid outdoor exertion. The general public should reduce outdoor exertion.

10+: Serious Health Risk
Health Advice: Sensitive groups should avoid going outdoors. The general public should reduce or avoid outdoor physical exertion to a minimum.


Who are the "Sensitive Groups"?

Sensitive groups include:
• Children and young people
• Elderly persons
• People with existing respiratory illness (e.g., asthma) or heart diseases.
These groups are more vulnerable to air pollution and should take extra precautions when the AQHI is elevated.




Section 4: Ways to Improve Air Quality

Clean air is everyone's responsibility. Governments, industries, and individuals can all take action to reduce air pollution.

Practical Measures:

Cleaner Fuels: Use cleaner energy sources (like natural gas, nuclear power, and renewable energy such as solar and wind) to replace coal for generating electricity.
Cleaner Transport: Promote electric vehicles (EVs), use ultra-low sulphur fuels, and fit catalytic converters on vehicles to convert harmful exhaust gases into less harmful ones.
Public Transport: Travel by railway, bus, or walk instead of using private cars to reduce traffic emissions.
