Geographers use four main tools to look at places across the United Kingdom and the wider world. Each tool has its own special superpowers!
A. The Globe
A globe is a three-dimensional (\(3\text{D}\)), spherical model of planet Earth. Because it is round just like the real Earth, a globe shows the true shapes, sizes, and locations of oceans and continents without stretching or squishing them.
Did you know? When we try to flatten a round Earth onto a flat piece of paper, land near the North and South Poles (like Greenland) gets stretched out and looks much bigger than it really is. A globe gives us the most accurate picture!
B. The Atlas
An atlas is a book full of different maps. An atlas contains:
• Reference maps: Maps that show where countries, major cities, rivers, and mountain ranges are located.
• Thematic maps: Maps that focus on a special theme, such as weather and climate, or where people live (population).
• The Index: A list at the back of the book in alphabetical order, telling you the exact page and coordinates to find any place.
C. Maps
A map is a flat, two-dimensional (\(2\text{D}\)) drawing of an area seen from above. This is called a bird’s-eye view or plan view. Maps use a scale so that huge areas of land can fit neatly onto a sheet of paper.
D. Digital and Computer Mapping (GIS)
Today, we can also explore maps on computers, tablets, and smartphones using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and programs like Digimap for Schools and Google Earth. Digital maps allow us to:
• Zoom in and out: Switch easily from looking at your whole school's neighbourhood to looking at the entire country.
• Switch layers: Turn on satellite photos, road maps, or terrain lines with a single click.
• Measure: Click on points to find direct distances and real-world areas instantly.

Golden Rule for Maps: On almost every standard map, North is at the very top of the page, unless a special North arrow points in a different direction.

2. OS Landranger Maps (\(1:50\,000\)):
On these maps, \(2\text{ cm}\) on the map equals \(1\text{ km}\) in real life (which means \(1\text{ cm} = 500\text{ m}\)). Each grid square measures \(2\text{ cm} \times 2\text{ cm} = 1\text{ km}^2\). These maps cover larger areas, perfect for cycling or planning day trips.
The Key (or Legend) and Symbols
Because words take up too much space on a map, geographers use small pictures, letters, and coloured lines called symbols. The key (or legend) tells you what every symbol means.
Here are common OS symbols you should know:
• Places of Worship: A church with a tower is shown with a cross on top of a square. A church with a spire has a cross on top of a sharp point or circle. Other places of worship are shown with a cross or a circle.
• Transport & Travel: A railway station is marked by a solid dot or train symbol. Bus stations are clearly labeled, and parking is shown with a capital white P in a blue square. Public footpaths appear as dashed green or red lines, while bridleways use longer dashed lines.
• Tourism & Leisure: A campsite is shown with a small tent icon, a caravan site with a caravan icon, a picnic site with a picnic bench, and a viewpoint with a blue fan shape with radiating rays. Information centres have a small i inside a square.
• Landscape & Nature: Woodland is shown with tree icons (deciduous leafy trees look rounded, while coniferous evergreen trees look spiky like Christmas trees). A triangulation pillar (or trig point) is shown as a small blue triangle with a dot in the middle, showing the exact height of a hill or mountain. Contour lines are thin orange or brown lines that join places of equal height above sea level.

Always read the Eastings (along the bottom) first, and the Northings (up the side) second.
Four-Figure Grid References (Finding a Whole Square)
A four-figure grid reference identifies a single \(1\text{ km}^2\) square.
Step 1: Find the square you want.
Step 2: Look at the bottom-left (South-West) corner of that square.
Step 3: Read the 2-digit Easting number along the bottom line that touches that corner.
Step 4: Read the 2-digit Northing number up the side line that touches that corner.
Step 5: Put the numbers together! If the Easting is \(24\) and the Northing is \(56\), the 4-figure grid reference is \(2456\).
Six-Figure Grid References (Pinpointing an Exact Building or Spot)
A six-figure grid reference is even more precise. It divides each \(1\text{ km}\) square into \(10\) tiny tenths from left to right and \(10\) tiny tenths from bottom to top, pinpointing an area of just \(100\text{ m} \times 100\text{ m}\)!
Let's find the six-figure reference for a church inside square \(2456\):
Step 1: Start with your 2-digit Easting (\(24\)).
Step 2: Look across the square from left to right and estimate how many tenths across the church is. If it is \(3\) tenths across, add \(3\) to the Easting to get \(243\).
Step 3: Now look at your 2-digit Northing (\(56\)).
Step 4: Look up the square from bottom to top and estimate how many tenths up the church is. If it is \(7\) tenths up, add \(7\) to the Northing to get \(567\).
Step 5: Join your two 3-digit numbers together: \(243567\).
Notice: The first three digits (\(243\)) are the Eastings, and the last three digits (\(567\)) are the Northings!

5. Fieldwork and Making Your Own Maps

During fieldwork, you can gather information using:
• Tally charts: Counting passing vehicles or pedestrians.
• Land-use surveys: Marking whether buildings are shops, houses, parks, or offices.
• Questionnaires: Asking local residents questions about their area.
• Transects: Walking along a set straight line and recording changes in features.
Once you are back in the classroom, you can present your findings using clear bar charts, pie charts, or by adding your findings directly onto a digital GIS map.

5. Assuming all map scales are the same: Always check if your map is \(1:25\,000\) (\(4\text{ cm} = 1\text{ km}\)) or \(1:50\,000\) (\(2\text{ cm} = 1\text{ km}\)) before measuring real-world distances.
