Phonetics and Phonology: The Sounds of English
Welcome to the study of the "sound" level of English! In the OxfordAQA International A-level, phonetics and phonology is one of the six essential frameworks in your analytical toolkit. While other frameworks look at words on a page, this one focuses on how we actually speak and hear language.
Don't worry if you find this topic a bit intimidating because of the symbols or technical terms. At its heart, it is simply about describing the "music" and "mechanics" of spoken English. Understanding this level will help you analyze everything from a child learning to speak to a politician giving a powerful speech.

1. What is the Difference?
It is helpful to start by separating these two closely related terms:
Phonetics: This is the physical side. It looks at how we actually produce sounds using our mouth, tongue, and throat (articulation). It also looks at the physical properties of the sound waves themselves.
Phonology: This is the "system" side. It looks at how sounds are organized within a specific language to create meaning. For example, why does "pin" mean something different from "bin" in English?

2. Consonants: The "Building Blocks"

- Fricatives: Air is squeezed through a narrow gap, creating friction (e.g., \( /f/ \), \( /v/ \), \( /s/ \)).
- Nasals: Air comes out through the nose (e.g., \( /m/ \), \( /n/ \)).

In your exams, you will often analyze transcripts of spoken language. Prosodics are the features that appear "on top" of the words. They are vital for understanding the speaker's purpose and attitude.
Pitch: How high or low the voice is. A sudden rise in pitch often indicates a question or surprise.
Pace (Tempo): How fast someone speaks. Speaking quickly might show excitement or nervousness; speaking slowly might show authority or careful thought.
Volume: How loud or soft the speech is. This is often used to assert power and status (Unit 2).
Intonation: The "melody" of the voice. Think of how your voice goes up at the end of a sentence when you are confused.
Stress: Putting extra emphasis on a specific syllable or word.
Example: Compare "I didn't steal your red pen" with "I didn't steal your red pen." The meaning changes based on the stress!
Quick Review: Prosodic features help us understand pragmatics (implied meaning). If someone says "Great job" with a falling, flat intonation, they are probably being sarcastic!
5. Connected Speech: How Sounds Change
In real life, we don't speak like robots. We talk fast, and sounds often crash into each other. This is called connected speech. You will see this in transcripts as non-standard spelling or "slurred" words.
Assimilation: When a sound changes to become more like a neighboring sound.
Example: "Ten cards" often sounds like "Teng cards" because the "n" moves toward the "k" sound.
Elision: When sounds are completely dropped to make speaking faster.
Example: Saying "next door" but dropping the "t" so it sounds like "nex door". Or "tell 'em" instead of "tell them".
Liaison (Linking): Adding a sound between words to make them flow.
Example: In many accents, we add a "r" sound between "law and order" so it sounds like "law-r-and order".
Why does this matter? In Unit 1, highly formal speech (like a news report) usually has very little elision. Spontaneous speech (like friends chatting) has a lot of it.

1. Mode: Is this spoken or written? If it's spoken, how do the sounds reflect the context?
2. Identity: Does the speaker have a specific accent or use "slang" pronunciations to show they belong to a certain social group?
3. Power: Is the speaker using volume and stress to dominate the conversation?
4. Development: (For Unit 3) Is a child struggling with certain places of articulation? For example, saying "tat" instead of "cat" (replacing a velar sound with an alveolar one).
