Theme 1: Identity and Culture — Cultural Life: Reading, Music, Sport, Film and Television
Welcome to your study notes for Cultural Life (文化生活 / ぶんかせいかつ)! This topic is a core part of Theme 1: Identity and culture in the Pearson Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Japanese course (1JA0). Talking about what you read, listen to, play, and watch is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to score top marks in your Listening (Paper 1), Speaking (Paper 2), Reading (Paper 3), and Writing (Paper 4) exams.
Don't worry if learning all the kanji and vocabulary feels challenging at first. We will break everything down into bite-sized, digestible steps so that you can confidently understand and create Japanese sentences about your free time.
---1. Essential Vocabulary by Topic Area
In the Edexcel GCSE exam, questions often ask you what people do in their spare time, what their opinions are, and what activities they plan to do next. Let's master the lexis for each of the four areas.
A. Reading (どくしょ / 本)
Reading is a classic hobby topic. Notice how many words share the kanji 本 (book / origin) and 画/画 (picture).
• 本 (ほん) — Book
• ざっし (雑誌) — Magazine
• まんが (漫画) — Manga / Comic book
• しょうせつ (小説) — Novel
• 新聞 (しんぶん) — Newspaper
• 絵本 (えほん) — Picture book
• よむ (読む) — To read (Group 1 / u-verb)
• かりる (借りる) — To borrow (Group 2 / ru-verb)
• としょかん (図書館) — Library
• 本や (ほんや) — Bookstore
B. Music (おんがく / 音楽)
Music vocabulary includes traditional Japanese words as well as loan words written in Katakana.
• 音楽 (おんがく) — Music
• うた (歌) — Song
• かしゅ (歌手) — Singer
• コンサート — Concert
• ギター — Guitar
• ピアノ — Piano
• ロック — Rock music
• ポップス / J-POP — Pop music / Japanese pop
• クラシック — Classical music
• きく (聞く) — To listen / hear
• うたう (歌う) — To sing
• ひく (弾く) — To play (a stringed or keyboard instrument like guitar or piano)
C. Sport (スポーツ / 運動)
Sport words encompass both modern global sports (in Katakana) and traditional Japanese martial arts.
• サッカー — Football / Soccer
• 野球 (やきゅう) — Baseball
• 水泳 (すいえい) — Swimming (noun)
• テニス — Tennis
• バスケットボール — Basketball

• およぐ (泳ぐ) — To swim (verb)
• かつ (勝つ) — To win
• まける (負ける) — To lose
• れんしゅうする (練習する) — To practise
D. Film and Television (えいが・テレビ / 映画・テレビ)
Talking about screen media gives you a fantastic opportunity to use descriptive adjectives and emotional reactions.
• 映画 (えいが) — Film / Movie
• 映画館 (えいがかん) — Cinema / Movie theatre
• アニメ — Anime / Animation
• ドラマ — TV drama
• ニュース — News
• 番組 (ばんぐみ) — TV programme
• 俳優 (はいゆう) — Actor / Actress
• 見る (みる) — To watch / see
• おもしろい — Interesting / Fun
• つまらない — Boring
• こわい — Scary
• かんどうする (感動する) — To be moved / touched emotionally
Quick Key Takeaway: Check whether an activity takes a Katakana loan word (e.g., コンサート, テニス) or Kanji/Hiragana (e.g., 野球, 本). Accurate script spelling is strictly required for full marks!
---2. Essential Grammar Patterns
To move from Foundation to Higher tier scores in GCSE Japanese, you must be able to express likes, abilities, frequency, combined actions, reasons, and future plans.
A. Stating Hobbies and Preferences
To state what you like or dislike, remember the key particle rule: use が before すき, きらい, or だいすき.
• Pattern 1: [Noun] が すきです / だいすきです / きらいです。
Example: わたしは ロックが だいすきです。 (I love rock music.)
• Pattern 2 (Nominalising verbs with こと / の): しゅみは [Plain Verb] こと / の です。
Example: わたしの しゅみは まんがを よむこと です。 (My hobby is reading manga.)
B. Expressing Ability (Can / Cannot Do)
When you want to say you can play a sport or instrument:
• Pattern 1 (Noun): [Noun] が できます。
Example: わたしは 空手が できます。 (I can do karate.)
• Pattern 2 (Action): [Plain Verb] ことが できます。
Example: ピアノを ひくことが できます。 (I can play the piano.)
C. Frequency & Routine Adverbs
Examiners love to see how often you carry out leisure activities. Pay special attention to adverbs that require negative verb endings!
• よく (often) — よく 映画を 見ます。 (I often watch films.)
• ときどき (sometimes) — ときどき としょかんで 本を 読みます。 (I sometimes read books at the library.)
• あまり (rarely / not very much + negative verb) — あまり テレビを 見ません。 (I rarely watch TV.)
• ぜんぜん (never / not at all + negative verb) — ぜんぜん 水泳を しません。 (I never do swimming.)
• まい日 (まいにち) / まいしゅう (every day / every week) — まいしゅう サッカーの れんしゅうを します。 (Every week I practise football.)
D. Giving Justifications with から / ですから
In Paper 2 (Speaking) and Paper 4 (Writing), giving a justification is mandatory if you want to reach the top mark bands.
• Pattern: [Reason + から], [Opinion / Action]。
Example: その ドラマは おもしろいですから、まい日 見ます。 (Because that drama is interesting, I watch it every day.)
Example: こわい えいがが きらいですから、映画館に 行きません。 (Because I dislike scary movies, I don't go to the cinema.)
E. Connecting Actions: ~て Form and ~ながら
Instead of writing short, repetitive sentences, connect your activities like a fluent speaker!
• Connecting two actions in sequence (~て form):
本を よんで、音楽を ききました。 (I read a book, and then listened to music.)
• Doing two actions simultaneously ([Verb Stem] + ながら):
音楽を 聞きながら べんきょうします。 (I study while listening to music.)
F. Desires and Future Plans
Demonstrating variety in time frames (past, present, and future) is essential for GCSE success.
• Desire ([Verb stem] + たいです):
新しい しょうせつを よみたいです。 (I want to read a new novel.)
• Plan/Intention ([Plain Verb] + つもりです):
来週 (らいしゅう) 友だちと コンサートに 行くつもりです。 (I intend to go to a concert with a friend next week.)
Quick Key Takeaway: Build complex sentences by combining a frequency adverb, an action, a reason with から, and a future plan with つもりです.
---3. Common Pitfalls & Examiner Tips
Below are common mistakes highlighted in Edexcel GCSE examiner reports. Learning these traps now will safeguard your marks!
Pitfall 1: Using the Wrong Verb for Instruments and Sports
In English, we say "play" tennis, "play" the piano, and "play" with friends. In Japanese, these are completely different verbs:
• Sports / Games: Use する (e.g., サッカーを する — to play football). Never use あそぶ for sports; あそぶ means to hang out or fool around!
• Stringed / Keyed Instruments: Use ひく (e.g., ギターを ひく — to play the guitar, ピアノを ひく — to play the piano). Saying ギターをする is incorrect.
• Wind / Brass Instruments: Use ふく (to blow).
Pitfall 2: The Particle Trap with すき / きらい / できます
In English, "like" is a transitive verb taking a direct object ("I like books"). In Japanese, すき and きらい are na-adjectives, and できます describes potential. Therefore, they take the subject particle が, not を.
• Incorrect: 映画 を すきです。
• Correct: 映画 が すきです。
• Incorrect: 空手 を できます。
• Correct: 空手 が できます。
Pitfall 3: Tense Mismatches (Time-Marker Disagreements)
Always double-check that your time indicators match your verb endings. A common error is writing a future time phrase with a past-tense verb.
• Incorrect: あした 映画館に 行きました。
• Correct: あした 映画館に 行きます (or 行くつもりです)。
• Correct Past: きのう 映画館に 行きました。
Pitfall 4: Katakana Confusion and Script Rules
• Rōmaji Rule: Rōmaji is never credited in Edexcel Reading or Writing papers. You must write in accurate Hiragana, Katakana, and prescribed GCSE Kanji.
• Katakana look-alikes: Be extremely neat when writing pairs like シ (shi) vs ツ (tsu), and ソ (so) vs ン (n). In シ and ン, strokes sweep upwards from the bottom-left; in ツ and ソ, strokes drop downwards from top-right.
• Hiragana stroke accuracy: Do not omit the dot in お (or it will look like あ), and do not write ろ like an Arabic numeral "3".
Pitfall 5: Register Consistency and Genkō Yōshi (Squared Paper)
• Polite Register: Keep your style consistent throughout your writing. Stick to the polite form (です / ます) unless specifically guided otherwise.
• Genkō Yōshi rules: On the Pearson writing grid, each character and punctuation mark (such as 。 and 、) occupies its own individual square.
4. Model Answers and Exam Applications
Example 1: Foundation Tier Writing Task
Prompt: Write a short passage about your hobbies. Mention what sports you do and what music you listen to.
Model Response:
わたしの しゅみは スポーツと 音楽です。まいしゅう 土曜日に テニスを します。とても たのしいです。そして、まいにち 家で J-POPを 聞きます。来週 (らいしゅう) 友だちと コンサートに 行きたいです。
Translation: My hobbies are sports and music. Every week on Saturday I play tennis. It is very fun. And, every day at home I listen to J-POP. Next week, I want to go to a concert with my friend.
Example 2: Higher Tier Writing Task
Prompt: Write an extended response about your cultural life. Include past activities, reasons for your preferences, and future plans.
Model Response:
子どもの 時、よく 本や まんがを 読みました。しかし、さいきんは いそがしいですから、あまり 読みません。映画を 見ることが だいすきです。先週 (せんしゅう)、映画館で 日本の アニメを 見ました。とても 感動しました (かんどうしました)。今週の 日曜日に 友だちと 新しい 映画を 見るつもりです。
Translation: When I was a child, I often read books and manga. However, because I am busy recently, I rarely read them. I love watching films. Last week, I watched a Japanese anime at the cinema. I was very moved. This Sunday, I intend to watch a new film with my friend.
5. Quick Revision Checklist
Before sitting your exam, make sure you can tick off every item on this list:
1. I can name at least 3 reading materials (e.g., ほん, ざっし, しょうせつ) and where to find them (としょかん, ほんや).
2. I can state my favourite music genre in Katakana (e.g., ロック, ポップス, クラシック) using the verb ききます.
3. I remember to use ひく for guitar/piano and する for sports (never あそぶ).
4. I use the particle が with すきです, きらいです, and できます.
5. I pair あまり and ぜんぜん with negative verb endings (〜ません).
6. I can link actions using the ~て form and ~ながら.
7. I can justify my opinions using 〜から / ですから.
8. I express future intentions using 〜たいです and 〜つもりです.
9. I write neatly in Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji without relying on Rōmaji.
