In our daily lives, we are surrounded by images—from the icons on your smartphone to the photos you see on social media. In this chapter, we are going to look at Topic 6: Graphics. You will learn how computers handle different types of images and the skills you need to create and edit them yourself.

Don’t worry if you don’t consider yourself an "artist." ICT graphics are more about using the right tools to communicate information clearly than being the next Da Vinci!


1. Understanding Image Types: Bitmap vs. Vector

Computers "see" images in two main ways. Understanding the difference between these two is one of the most important parts of this chapter.

Bitmap Images

Think of a Bitmap image like a giant mosaic or a piece of cross-stitch embroidery. It is made up of thousands of tiny colored squares called pixels arranged on a grid.

Key Features:

  • They are used for complex images like digital photographs.
  • If you zoom in too much, the image becomes "pixelated" (it looks blocky and blurry).
  • Common examples include photos taken on your phone or scanned images.

Vector Images

A Vector image doesn't use pixels. Instead, it uses mathematical formulas to remember where lines, curves, and shapes are placed. If you tell a vector program to draw a circle, it remembers the center point and the radius, rather than coloring in individual pixels.

Key Features:

  • They are used for logos, icons, and clip art.
  • You can zoom in as much as you want, and the edges will always stay perfectly sharp and smooth.
  • They are usually smaller in file size than bitmaps because the computer only has to save a few "instructions" instead of millions of pixel colors.

Top Tip: If you want to remember the difference, think: Bitmap is for Beautiful photos; Vector is for Very sharp logos!


2. Creating Images

In your Paper 2 practical exam, you might be asked to build an image from scratch using basic building blocks. You don't need to draw freehand; you just need to know how to combine these elements:

Basic Shapes

You should be comfortable inserting and resizing these standard shapes:

  • Rectangles and Squares: The foundation of most diagrams.
  • Circles and Ovals: Great for highlighting areas or creating "bubbles."
  • Lines, Triangles, and Arrows: Essential for showing direction or connecting ideas in a flowchart.

Adding Text

Images often need labels to make sense. You can do this by using text boxes. These allow you to type text and move it anywhere on top of your shapes. Remember to make sure the text color stands out against the background!

Quick Review: Creating a graphic is often like playing with digital building blocks. You take a few rectangles, add an arrow, and put a text box on top to create a professional-looking diagram.


3. Editing Images

Often, you will be given an existing image and asked to change it. This is called image editing. Here are the skills you need to master:

Cropping

Cropping is the process of removing the outer parts of an image. You do this to:

  • Remove "dead space" or distracting backgrounds.
  • Focus the viewer's attention on the most important part of the photo.
  • Change the shape of the image (e.g., turning a wide photo into a square one).

Adding Captions and Text

Just like when creating an image, you can add text to an existing photo. This is useful for adding titles, descriptions, or captions that explain what is happening in the picture.

Deleting Unwanted Aspects

Sometimes an image has something in it that shouldn't be there—maybe a "photobomber" or a piece of text that is no longer correct. You can use editing tools to delete these parts. This helps make the final product look clean and professional.

4. Key Terms for Your Exam

Make sure you are comfortable with these terms, as they often appear in questions:

  • Resolution: Usually refers to the number of pixels in a bitmap image. Higher resolution means more detail but a larger file size.
  • Layering: Placing one object "in front of" or "behind" another. (This is also covered in the Word Processing chapter!)
  • Grouping: Joining several shapes together so they act as one single object.
