Section 1: The Conventions of a Research Report

1. Abstract
The Abstract is a short summary (usually 150–200 words) at the very beginning of the report. It covers the aims, hypotheses, method, results, and conclusions.

2. Introduction

3. Aims and Hypotheses
These are the specific goals of the research.
- The Aim is a general statement of what the researcher intends to investigate.
- The Hypotheses are clear, testable statements. This includes the Null Hypothesis (predicting no effect) and the Alternative Hypothesis (predicting a specific outcome), which can be directional or non-directional.
4. Method
The Method section must be detailed enough for another researcher to replicate the study exactly. It is usually split into sub-sections:
- Design: (e.g., independent groups, repeated measures, or naturalistic observation).
- Participants: Details about the sample (size, age, gender) and the sampling method (e.g., volunteer or opportunity sampling).
- Apparatus/Materials: Any equipment or tests used (e.g., a specific questionnaire or a fMRI scanner).
- Procedure: A step-by-step "recipe" of exactly what happened during the study.
- Ethics: How the researcher followed BPS or HCPC guidelines (e.g., informed consent, right to withdraw).
5. Results
This section presents what the researcher found. It includes:
- Descriptive Statistics: Graphs, tables, and measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) or dispersion (range, standard deviation).
- Inferential Statistics: The results of statistical tests (like Wilcoxon, Spearman’s, or Chi-squared) to see if the results are significant.

6. Discussion
