Introduction to Self-Report Methods and Sampling
In Psychology, we can’t always read minds or watch every behavior in a lab. Sometimes, the best way to find out what people are thinking, feeling, or doing is simply to ask them. This is called the self-report method. In this chapter, we will look at how psychologists use questionnaires and interviews to gather data, and how they choose the right people to take part in their research through sampling.
Don't worry if these terms seem technical at first. Think of it this way: if you've ever filled out a "Which Marvel character are you?" quiz or been interviewed for a part-time job, you've already experienced self-reports!
1. Self-Report Methods: Questionnaires
A questionnaire is a set of written questions used to collect data. They are great for reaching a large number of people quickly.
Types of Questions
Psychologists use different types of questions depending on what they want to find out:
- Closed Questions: These have a fixed set of answers (e.g., "Yes" or "No"). They produce quantitative data (numbers), which is easy to turn into a graph.
- Open Questions: These allow participants to answer in their own words (e.g., "Describe how you feel when..."). They produce qualitative data (rich, descriptive words).
- Ranked Scale Questions: These ask participants to rate something on a scale. For example, "On a scale of 1 to 5, how much do you agree with this statement?" This is a type of closed question that gives us more detail than a simple "Yes/No."
Strengths and Weaknesses of Questionnaires
Strengths: They are highly reliable because every participant answers the same questions in the same way. They are also cost-effective and time-efficient.
Weaknesses: Participants might give "socially desirable" answers (trying to look good) rather than being honest. This is called social desirability bias. Also, closed questions might force people to choose an answer that doesn't quite fit how they feel.
2. Self-Report Methods: Interviews
An interview is a face-to-face (or over the phone) conversation where the researcher asks the participant questions directly.
Three Types of Interviews
1. Structured Interviews: The interviewer has a pre-set list of questions and does not deviate from them. It’s like a questionnaire read out loud.

Researcher Effects
In an interview, the researcher effect (or interviewer effect) can happen. This is when the interviewer’s age, gender, or even their tone of voice influences how the participant answers. For example, a student might answer questions about school differently if the interviewer is a teacher versus another student.
3. Data Types and Analysis
When psychologists collect data, they need to know where it came from and how to analyze it.
Primary vs. Secondary Data
- Primary Data: This is "first-hand" data collected specifically for the current research (e.g., the researcher conducts their own survey).
- Secondary Data: This is "second-hand" data that already exists (e.g., looking at government statistics or another researcher's published results).
Thematic Analysis
When researchers have a lot of qualitative data (like pages of interview notes), they use thematic analysis. This involves looking for recurring themes or patterns in the text.

Alternative Hypotheses
When starting research, psychologists write an alternative hypothesis. This is a clear statement predicting that there will be a significant difference or relationship between variables.

4. Sampling Techniques
A sample is the small group of people chosen from the target population (the whole group the researcher is interested in) to take part in the study.
The Four Main Sampling Methods
1. Random Sampling: Every person in the target population has an equal chance of being picked (e.g., pulling names out of a hat).
- Pro: It is the most representative and unbiased method.
- Con: It can be very difficult and time-consuming to get a list of every single person in a large population.
2. Stratified Sampling: The researcher identifies sub-groups (strata) within the population (e.g., age or gender) and picks participants in the same proportions they appear in real life.
- Pro: Highly representative of the specific groups in the population.
- Con: Very complex to organize.
3. Volunteer Sampling: Participants choose to take part, usually by responding to an advert or a poster.
- Pro: It’s ethical (people want to be there) and easy to set up.
- Con: Volunteer bias – people who volunteer might be more motivated or have a specific personality type compared to the general public.
4. Opportunity Sampling: The researcher simply asks whoever is available at the time (e.g., stopping people in the street or using students in a classroom).
- Pro: Quick, easy, and cheap.
- Con: Often unrepresentative because you only get people who were in that specific place at that specific time.
5. Ethics in Self-Report Research
All research must follow the BPS Code of Ethics and Conduct (2009). When using self-report methods, researchers must be especially careful about:
- Informed Consent: Participants should know what the study is about before agreeing.
- Right to Withdraw: They can leave the questionnaire or interview at any time.
- Confidentiality: Their personal details and answers must be kept private.
- Protection from Harm: Questions shouldn't be so personal or upsetting that they cause psychological distress.
