What is Fieldwork?
Fieldwork is the process of observing and measuring the real world to test geographical theories. For your International AS Level, you are required to complete at least two days of fieldwork and research. This investigation will be the star of the show in Section B of your exam (where you talk about your own experience) and Section C (where you apply your skills to a new, unfamiliar location).
1. Starting with an Enquiry Question
Every great investigation starts with a question. You aren't just "looking at a beach"; you are investigating a specific problem.
Example (Coastal): "How does longshore drift affect the size of sediment along Sunny Bay?"
Example (Urban): "Does the quality of housing decrease as we move further from the city centre?"

2. Planning and Sampling
You can’t measure every single pebble on a beach or talk to every person in a city. That’s where sampling comes in. Choosing the right sampling method ensures your data is fair and representative.
Random Sampling: Every person or place has an equal chance of being picked. You might use a random number generator to pick coordinates on a map.
Systematic Sampling: You collect data at regular intervals. For example, measuring the beach profile every \(10\) metres.
Stratified Sampling: You divide your target area into groups. If a town is \(60\%\) modern housing and \(40\%\) old housing, you make sure your survey reflects that same split.
3. Collecting Your Data
In your exam, you need to know the difference between different types of data. Don't worry if these terms sound fancy; they are actually quite simple!
Primary Data: This is "fresh" data that you collect yourself in the field (e.g., pebble measurements, traffic counts).
Secondary Data: This is "second-hand" data collected by someone else (e.g., census records, old maps, or weather reports from a website).
Quantitative Data: Information that involves numbers and measurements. It answers "how much?" or "how many?".
Qualitative Data: Information that is descriptive and based on opinions or observations. It answers "what is it like?".
Common Fieldwork Techniques:
For Crowded Coasts:
- Beach Profiling: Using ranging poles and a clinometer to measure the slope of the beach.
- Sediment Analysis: Using a calliper to measure the size (long axis) of pebbles.
- Questionnaires: Asking tourists about their impact on the coastal ecosystem.
For Urban Problems:

- Traffic Counts: Counting the number of vehicles passing a point in \(5\) minutes.

4. Data Presentation and Analysis
