Introduction to Moscovici et al. (1969)

In our previous lessons, we looked at how the majority can pressure us to fit in (like in Asch’s study). But have you ever wondered how small groups—the minorities—manage to change the world? Think about the Suffragettes or environmental activists. They started as small groups and eventually changed the way the majority thinks. Moscovici et al. (1969) wanted to investigate exactly how this happens in a controlled lab setting.

This study is the "flip side" of conformity. Instead of looking at how we follow the crowd, it looks at how the "underdog" can lead the crowd somewhere new.

The Aim of the Study

The main goal was to see if a consistent minority could influence a majority to give an incorrect answer in a simple color perception task. Moscovici wanted to prove that if a minority sticks to their guns, they can actually change the minds of the larger group.

The Procedure: What did they do?

Moscovici used a laboratory experiment with a standardised procedure. Here is how it worked:

  • The Participants: There were \(172\) female participants in total. They were told they were taking part in a "color perception" test.
  • The Groups: Participants were split into groups of six. In each group, there were four real participants and two confederates (people working with the researcher). This meant the minority (the two confederates) was outnumbered by the majority (the four students).
  • The Task: Everyone was shown \(36\) slides. All the slides were clearly blue, though they varied in intensity (some were brighter than others). Participants had to say the color of the slide out loud.

The Three Conditions

Moscovici used three different experimental conditions to see what made the minority effective:

  1. The Consistent Condition: The two confederates said the slides were "green" for every single one of the \(36\) trials. They never changed their minds.
  2. The Inconsistent Condition: The two confederates said the slides were "green" \(24\) times but "blue" \(12\) times. They wavered in their answers.
  3. The Control Condition: There were no confederates. Everyone in the group was a real participant. This was used to make sure people didn't just naturally see the slides as green.

High Reliability: The study was a laboratory experiment with a highly standardised procedure. Every group saw the same \(36\) slides in the same order. This means the experiment can be easily repeated to see if the results are consistent over time.

Validity

  • Low Ecological Validity: Identifying the color of a slide in a lab is very different from real-life social influence. In the real world, minority influence usually involves deeply held beliefs (like politics or religion), not just naming colors.
  • High Internal Validity: Because it was a controlled experiment, Moscovici could be sure that it was the consistency of the minority causing the change, rather than other "extraneous" variables.

Objectivity vs. Subjectivity

The study is quite objective because it collected quantitative data (percentages of agreement). This isn't based on the researcher's opinion; it is based on clear, countable facts.

Ethics

Deception: Participants were told the study was about "color perception" when it was actually about social influence. They were also "tricked" by the confederates. However, this deception was necessary to prevent demand characteristics (where participants change their behavior because they know what the study is about).
