The Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU)

The ALU is the computer's calculator. It handles two main things:
1. Arithmetic: Simple math like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
2. Logic: Making comparisons, such as "Is A greater than B?" or "Is this true or false?"

The Control Unit (CU)

The CU is like the conductor of an orchestra. It doesn't play an instrument itself, but it tells everyone else when to play and how fast to go. It coordinates the flow of data through the processor and manages the Fetch-Decode-Execute cycle.

The Registers

Registers are super-fast, tiny storage locations inside the CPU. If the main memory (RAM) is like a giant library, a register is like a Post-it note you are holding in your hand for immediate use.

You need to know these specific registers:

1. Program Counter (PC): Holds the address of the next instruction to be fetched. It’s like a bookmark telling the CPU where to read next.
2. Accumulator (ACC): Stores the results of calculations carried out by the ALU. If you add 5 + 2, the "7" is kept here.
3. Memory Address Register (MAR): Holds the address of the memory location currently being read from or written to.
4. Memory Data Register (MDR): Holds the actual data or instruction that has just been fetched from memory or is about to be written to memory.
5. Current Instruction Register (CIR): Holds the instruction that is currently being decoded and executed.

2. The Buses: The Information Highways

Data moves between the CPU and RAM using "highways" called Buses. There are three you need to know:

1. Data Bus: Carries the actual data (like numbers or characters) between the CPU and memory. It's bi-directional (two-way).
2. Address Bus: Carries the location (address) of where the data is going. This is one-way (CPU to memory).
3. Control Bus: Carries command signals from the Control Unit (e.g., "Read data" or "Write data").

Analogy: Imagine a pizza delivery. The Address Bus is the GPS telling the driver where to go. The Data Bus is the pizza itself being moved. The Control Bus is the phone call confirming the order was received.

3. The Fetch-Decode-Execute (FDE) Cycle

This is the continuous process the CPU goes through to run programs. It happens billions of times every second!

Step-by-Step:

1. Fetch:
- The address in the PC is copied to the MAR.
- the PC is incremented (adds 1) so it points to the next instruction.
- The instruction at that address is moved from RAM to the MDR via the Data Bus.
- The instruction is copied from the MDR to the CIR.

2. Decode:
- The Control Unit looks at the instruction in the CIR to figure out what needs to be done. It splits it into an opcode (the command) and an operand (the data or address to use).

3. Execute:
- The instruction is carried out. This might involve the ALU doing math or data being moved into the Accumulator.

Common Mistake: Students often forget that the PC increments during the Fetch stage, not at the end of the whole cycle!

4. Factors Affecting Performance

Why is one computer faster than another? It usually comes down to these three things:

1. Clock Speed: This is how many FDE cycles the CPU can do per second, measured in Hertz (Hz). A \( 3.5 GHz \) processor does 3.5 billion cycles every second! Higher clock speed = more instructions processed per second.
2. Number of Cores: A "core" is a complete copy of a CPU. A Dual-core processor can theoretically do two things at once, and a Quad-core can do four. Note: This only works if the software is designed to use multiple cores!
3. Cache Size: Cache is a tiny amount of extremely fast memory right next to the CPU. It stores frequently used instructions so the CPU doesn't have to wait for the slower RAM. More cache = less time waiting for data.

Analogy: A kitchen. Clock speed is how fast the chef moves. Cores are how many chefs are in the kitchen. Cache is the counter space right next to the stove—the more you have, the less you have to walk back and forth to the pantry (RAM).

5. Processor Architectures

Architecture describes how the CPU is laid out and how it connects to memory.

Von Neumann Architecture

This is the most common design. In this setup, data and instructions share the same memory and the same buses. It’s simple and cheap but creates a "bottleneck" because the CPU can't fetch an instruction and data at the exact same time.

Harvard Architecture

This design has separate memory and buses for data and instructions. This is faster because the CPU can fetch an instruction and data simultaneously. You usually find this in embedded systems like a microwave or a digital watch.

Contemporary Architectures

Modern CPUs often use a mix of both. For example, they might use Von Neumann for the main memory but have separate "Harvard-style" caches (Instruction Cache and Data Cache) inside the chip to speed things up.
