Construction and the Built Environment 0006 考試技巧

GCSE Construction and the Built Environment (CCEA) exam tips built from real examiner reports: the jointing allowance that wrecks cutting-list totals, the safety sign colours that get mixed up, and how to turn a QWC answer from a bullet list into marks.

計算機規定

Calculators are allowed in both written papers under the general JCQ and CCEA rules: no stored retrievable information such as formulae, text or programs, no computer algebra function, no internet or translator function. There is no Construction-specific calculator ban in the specification. You will need one for cutting-list totals, scaling calculations and cost or percentage questions in both units. If your calculator has an exam mode, switch it on rather than relying on the reset button, which does not clear stored memory.

  • AO1: AO1: recall, select and communicate their knowledge and understanding of concepts, issues and terminology (30%)
  • AO2: AO2: apply their skills, knowledge and understanding, including quality standards, in a variety of contexts and in planning and carrying out investigations and tasks (50%)
  • AO3: AO3: analyse and evaluate evidence, make reasoned judgements and present conclusions (20%)

Running total for a timber cutting list using the memory key

Casio fx-83/85 series (scientific)

用途: Adds up every piece in a cutting list correctly, with joint allowances included, without losing track partway through a long list.

使用時機: Any question that asks for a total length of timber, a number of standard lengths required, or a total material quantity built from several individual pieces.

步驟
For each piece, add the stated joint allowance to its base length (for example a rail length plus 27mm at each end for a mortice and tenon joint, so plus 54mm in total). Enter the resulting figure and press M+ to add it to memory. Repeat for every piece in the list. Once every piece is entered, press MRC (or RM) once to display the running total, then divide by 1000 to convert millimetres to metres before rounding up to the nearest standard timber length.

考試提示: This uses only the calculator's live memory key during the exam itself. CCEA and JCQ ban any stored or retrievable information, so nothing is prepared or saved in the calculator beforehand.

Percentage change and allowance calculation with the percent key

Casio fx-83/85 series (scientific)

用途: Finds a cost increase, a waste allowance, or an energy saving figure in one step, without converting the percentage to a decimal by hand first.

使用時機: Questions that ask for a percentage change in material cost, a waste or overage allowance on a quantity, or a percentage saving from a sustainable construction method.

步驟
To find a percentage change, enter the original value, press minus, enter the new value, press the percent key, then press equals to read the percentage change directly. To find a specific allowance amount, enter the base value, press multiply, enter the percentage figure, press the percent key, then press equals.

考試提示: This uses only the calculator's live percent key during the exam itself. CCEA and JCQ ban any stored or retrievable information, so nothing is prepared or saved in the calculator beforehand.

Bracketed area calculation for irregular room shapes

Casio fx-83/85 series (scientific)

用途: Finds the total floor or roof area of an irregular shape from the pre-release drawings in a single, checkable calculation instead of several separate sums.

使用時機: Scaling and quantity questions in Unit 2 where a room, roof or wall area on the pre-release drawing has to be split into two or more simpler rectangles.

步驟
Measure each rectangle's length and width from the scaled drawing, then enter the whole calculation in one line using brackets to keep each rectangle separate, for example open bracket 3.2 multiplied by 2.4 close bracket plus open bracket 1.5 multiplied by 1.1 close bracket, then press equals. The display shows the combined total, and the bracketed expression stays visible so you can check each part before you write down the final figure.

考試提示: This uses only the calculator's live bracket and arithmetic keys during the exam itself. CCEA and JCQ ban any stored or retrievable information, so nothing is prepared or saved in the calculator beforehand.

常見錯誤

  1. 1high涉及分數: 4Cutting lists and joinery calculations

Timber cutting-list calculations leave out the allowance for the joint itself, for example the 27mm added at each end of a rail for a mortice and tenon joint, 54mm in total, before the list is totalled.

如何避免: Add the stated joint allowance to every individual piece before you total anything. Convert the final running total from millimetres to metres last, then compare it against standard timber lengths.
  2. 2high涉及分數: 2Health and safety signage

Health and safety sign questions describe signs in vague terms, such as 'a green sign', or give the wrong colour and shape combination for the category, such as a red circular border for a mandatory action.

如何避免: Learn shape and colour together: mandatory is a white symbol on a blue circle, prohibition is a black symbol on white inside a red circle with a diagonal line, and safe condition is a white symbol on a green background.
  3. 3high涉及分數: 2Damp prevention

The damp proof course, DPC, a barrier built into a wall, gets confused with the damp proof membrane, DPM, the polythene sheet laid under a solid floor.

如何避免: Fix the two in your mind by location: DPC sits in the wall, DPM sits under the floor. Name the correct one for the construction detail the question describes.
  4. 4medium涉及分數: 2Structural forms and fire behaviour

Steel is assumed to be fire resistant because it does not burn, when in fact it loses tensile and compressive strength and buckles at high temperature, which is why structural steel needs fire protection.

如何避免: Separate combustibility from fire resistance in your answer. State that steel is non-combustible, then explain the strength loss and buckling risk that still makes fire protection necessary.
  5. 5medium涉及分數: 3The construction cycle

The RIBA Plan of Work stages, Strategic Definition, Preparation and Brief, Concept Design, Developed Design, Technical Design, Construction, Handover and Close Out, and In Use, are listed out of sequence or merged into each other.

如何避免: Learn the eight stages as a fixed, ordered list. Marks are tied to the correct stage, so an answer that puts a task in the wrong stage does not earn credit for that stage.
  6. 6high涉及分數: 5Extended QWC evaluation questions

Extended, quality-of-written-communication questions are answered as an unorganised bulleted list, and cover only advantages or only disadvantages instead of both.

如何避免: Write in structured paragraphs using correct specialist terminology, cover both advantages and disadvantages, and end with a stated judgement.
  7. 7medium涉及分數: 3Scaling from pre-release drawings

Scaling measurements taken from the pre-release drawings fall outside the accepted tolerance, typically plus or minus 100mm, especially on internal partitions or floor-to-floor heights that are not directly labelled.

如何避免: Measure with a physical scale ruler against the stated scale rather than estimating by eye, and double-check any dimension that is not printed directly on the drawing.
  8. 8medium涉及分數: 2Risk assessment

Risk assessment matrices identify a hazard correctly but give unrealistic severity and likelihood ratings, or omit multiplying the two together to reach a final risk score.

如何避免: Score severity and likelihood separately, on a realistic scale, then multiply them together and show that calculation, not just the two starting numbers.
