CCEA GCSE Economics is decided by the 8, 10 and 15-mark evaluation questions and by whether students manipulate data instead of describing it. This page breaks down both papers and fixes the mistakes examiner reports see most often.

計算機規定
Calculators are permitted on both papers, which include price elasticity, break-even, and trade balance calculations. CCEA follows the standard JCQ rule: no stored, retrievable information of any kind, including formulae, notes or text, and no calculator with symbolic algebra, translator or internet or communication functions. Switch on exam mode if your calculator has one, since the reset button clears settings but not stored memory.
AO1: AO1: recall, select and communicate their knowledge and understanding of concepts, issues and terminology (30%)
AO2: AO2: apply skills, knowledge and understanding in a variety of contexts (35%)
AO3: AO3: analyse and evaluate evidence, make reasoned judgements and present appropriate conclusions (35%)
Elasticity percentage change, original figure first
用途: Get the percentage change in quantity or price needed for an elasticity calculation without dividing by the wrong figure.
使用時機: For price elasticity of demand or supply questions that ask you to find percentage change in quantity and percentage change in price before dividing one by the other.
步驟
For price elasticity of demand or supply, calculate percentage change in quantity as (new minus original) divided by the ORIGINAL figure, times 100, as one calculator step, write that number down, then repeat for percentage change in price before dividing the two.
考試提示: Do not store the elasticity formula itself in the calculator's memory or text function before the exam. CCEA and JCQ rules ban any retrievable formulae, notes or text stored in a calculator. Clear the memory and use exam mode if available.
Break-even point on the fly
用途: Get the break-even output figure to check against the graph you have drawn, rather than estimating it by eye.
使用時機: For break-even questions that ask you to calculate the break-even point and also draw or label a break-even graph.
步驟
For a break-even question, key in fixed costs divided by (selling price minus variable cost per unit) directly on the calculator rather than estimating it, then check the result makes sense against the graph you have drawn.
考試提示: The calculator only checks your arithmetic. You still need to draw and label the break-even graph by hand, since the diagram itself carries separate marks that a numerical answer alone does not earn.
常見錯誤
1medium涉及分數: 2Government policy instruments
Confusing corporation tax, which is levied on company profits, with general indirect taxes or VAT, which are levied on spending.
如何避免: State plainly what corporation tax is charged on, profit, before comparing it with any indirect tax in the same answer.
2high涉及分數: 3Interpreting economic data
Describing a trend from a line chart, such as unemployment over time, without quoting the starting figure, the peak or trough, and the final figure.
如何避免: Always give three numbers: where the series starts, where it turns, and where it ends, then state the percentage or percentage point change between them.
3high涉及分數: 3Markets and price determination
Drawing a supply or demand shift without dropping dotted lines from the new equilibrium down to both axes, leaving the new price and quantity unclear.
如何避免: After shifting the curve, draw dotted guide lines from the new intersection point to the price axis and the quantity axis, and label both new values.
4medium涉及分數: 3Costs, revenue and profit
Leaving the profit and loss zones unshaded or unlabelled on a break-even diagram.
如何避免: Shade the area between total cost and total revenue on each side of the break-even point, and label one side profit and the other loss.
5high涉及分數: 6Extended evaluation questions
Giving only one side of the argument in an 8, 10, or 15-mark evaluate or discuss question, which caps the answer at Level 2 however accurate the content is.
如何避免: Write at least one paragraph against your main argument as well as for it, then close with a judgement on which side is stronger and why.
6medium涉及分數: 2Demand and supply
Calculating a percentage change in elasticity by dividing by the new figure instead of the original baseline figure.
如何避免: Always divide the change by the starting value, not the ending value, and write this as a separate line before working out the elasticity coefficient.
7medium涉及分數: 3Exchange rates
Believing that a fall in the value of the pound makes imports cheaper and exports more expensive, the reverse of what actually happens.
如何避免: State the correct direction: a weaker pound makes UK exports cheaper for foreign buyers and imports more expensive for UK buyers.
8medium涉及分數: 2Social costs and benefits
Treating private costs and external costs as the same thing, rather than distinguishing a producer's own expenses from the costs imposed on third parties.
如何避免: Define private cost as what the producer pays directly and external cost as the cost borne by someone else, such as a nearby resident affected by pollution, then add them together to get social cost.
