CCEA GCSE Home Economics: Food and Nutrition is decided by whether Section C answers are written in paragraphs, not bullet points, and by naming the actual consequence of a nutrient, not just calling it healthy. This page covers the written paper and its most common mistakes.

The written paper is almost entirely short answer and extended writing, with occasional simple arithmetic around energy values per gram of protein, fat and carbohydrate. Where a calculator is used, the standard JCQ rule applies: no stored, retrievable information of any kind, including formulae, notes or text, and no symbolic algebra or internet or communication functions. There is no CCEA-specific calculator rule for this subject beyond the general JCQ position.

Writing the three Section C answers as bullet points or a list of disconnected statements instead of developed paragraphs.

Giving only the positive or only the negative side of a 4, 6, or 9-mark evaluate question, for example listing the benefits of a shopping app with nothing on its drawbacks.

Answering only one half of a two-part question, for example covering dietary advice but leaving out lifestyle advice when a question asks for both.

Giving generic nutritional advice for a lifecycle group instead of advice specific to that stage, for example general healthy eating tips rather than advice tailored to pregnancy or adolescence.

Assuming plant-based, non-haem iron is absorbed as efficiently as haem iron from meat, without mentioning that vitamin C improves its absorption.

Describing the Environmental Health Practitioner's role only in terms of closing unsafe restaurants, missing their broader statutory powers around food fraud, allergen enforcement, testing, and public education.
