Motor Vehicle and Road User Studies 3070
CCEA GCSE Motor Vehicle and Road User Studies rewards precise Highway Code detail and full mathematical working, not general road sense. This page shows where the marks sit in Unit 1 and the exact recall gaps examiners flag every year.

A calculator may be used for the motoring mathematics questions in this paper, and CCEA's general rule applies: no calculator with a computer algebra system, no borrowing a calculator from another candidate, and nothing stored in memory that could be retrieved during the exam, including formulae, notes or text. If your calculator has an exam mode, switch it on. It clears stored data far more reliably than the reset button, which only resets display settings and leaves stored programs or text in memory.
- AO1: AO1: demonstrate knowledge and understanding in relation to motor vehicle and road user studies (45%)
- AO2: AO2: analyse, evaluate and draw logical conclusions from motor vehicle and road user information (20%)
- AO3: AO3: collect, select and use road traffic information from a variety of sources (10%)
- AO4: AO4: demonstrate skills of vehicle (moped) control and roadcraft (25%)

2Motor Vehicle Technology: Power Units and Engine Systems
Confusing internal engine components on cutaway schematic diagrams, for example misidentifying exhaust baffles or swapping the camshaft and crankshaft.
Learn engine cutaway diagrams by labelling them from memory repeatedly, not just recognising the parts when they are already labelled.
Omitting step-by-step working on multi-step financial percentage and fuel unit conversion questions, so a wrong final figure loses every mark rather than just the accuracy mark.
Write each conversion or calculation step on its own line, including the units at each stage, even when the arithmetic feels obvious. 4The Highway Code
Treating a 10-mark extended response as a bullet-point list of hazards without pairing each one with the driver or rider's precaution.
For every hazard named, write what the driver or rider should do in response, in connected prose, not as two separate lists. 2Legal Requirements for the Vehicle
Confusing the Northern Ireland MOT age criteria with those in England, for example applying the 3-year rule instead of the 4-year rule that applies in Northern Ireland.
Treat MOT age, R-plate speed limits and other vehicle regulations as Northern Ireland-specific facts to learn directly, not assumptions carried over from general knowledge. 2The Highway Code
Omitting the mirrors, signal, manoeuvre routine when describing procedures for negotiating a roundabout or junction in an extended answer.
Use the exact phrase 'mirrors, signal, manoeuvre' when describing any manoeuvre, rather than a vaguer description of checking and moving off. 1Physical and Mental Fitness of the Driver
Confusing the legal alcohol limits for blood (80 milligrams per 100 millilitres) and urine (107 milligrams per 100 millilitres).
Learn both figures as a pair with their correct units, since a mixed-up figure is marked wrong even if the candidate clearly knows there is a legal limit. 1Motor Insurance and Documentation
Confusing endorsable offences, which carry a fine plus penalty points on the licence, with non-endorsable offences, which carry a fine only.
When naming an offence, state explicitly whether points are added to the licence, not just whether a fine applies. 2Motor Insurance and Documentation
Believing third-party insurance covers damage to the policyholder's own vehicle, when it only covers damage or injury caused to others.
State what third-party insurance excludes as well as what it covers: it does not pay for repairs to the insured driver's own car.
