Welcome to Nutrition and Healthy Eating!

Hello there! Today, we are going to explore how the food we eat helps us stay active, strong, and happy. Think of your body like a high-tech racing car. To win the race and keep the engine running smoothly, you need the right kind of fuel. In this chapter, we will learn how to choose the best fuel for your Active Living journey!

1. Food is Our Fuel

In our Active Living section, we focus on moving our bodies. But did you know that movement starts with what you eat? Food gives us energy. Without energy, we couldn't run, jump, or even think clearly!

The Energy Balance

Imagine a see-saw. On one side, we have the food we eat (Energy In). On the other side, we have the physical activity we do (Energy Out). To stay healthy, we want to keep that see-saw mostly balanced.
Example: If you are going to play a long game of soccer, your body will need a bit more "fuel" than if you are reading a book.

Quick Review:

Energy is the power our body uses to work and play. We get this power from the nutrients in our food.

2. The "Go, Grow, and Glow" Foods

Don't worry if all the different food names seem tricky! A simple way to remember what your body needs is to think of Go, Grow, and Glow.

Go Foods (Carbohydrates)

These are like the "petrol" for your engine. They give you the quick energy you need to run around the playground.
Key Terms: Carbohydrates (Carbs).
Examples: Bread, rice, pasta, oats, and potatoes.

Grow Foods (Proteins)

These help your muscles get stronger and help your body fix itself if you get a scrape or a bruise.
Key Terms: Protein.
Examples: Chicken, fish, beans, eggs, and milk.

Glow Foods (Vitamins and Minerals)

These keep your skin shiny, your eyes bright, and your immune system strong so you don't get sick. They make you "glow" with health!
Key Terms: Vitamins and Minerals.
Examples: Crunchy carrots, juicy oranges, spinach, and apples.

Memory Aid: The 3 G's

1. Go for Energy!
2. Grow for Power!
3. Glow for Health!

3. Making a Balanced Plate

How do we know if we are eating the right amount? A great trick is to look at your plate during lunch or dinner.
The Healthy Plate Rule:
- Fill half of your plate with colorful Glow foods (vegetables and fruits).
- Fill one-quarter with Go foods (like brown rice or pasta).
- Fill one-quarter with Grow foods (like beans or meat).

Did you know?

Eating many different colors of vegetables is called "Eating the Rainbow." Each color helps a different part of your body!

Takeaway:

A Balanced Diet means eating many different types of food in the right amounts to help your body stay active.

4. Hydration: Why Water is a Winner

When we are active, we sweat. Sweat is our body's way of cooling us down, but it means we are losing water. If we don't put that water back in, we might feel tired or get a headache. This is called being dehydrated.

Tips for staying hydrated:

1. Carry a reusable water bottle to school.
2. Take small sips often, even if you don't feel thirsty yet.
3. Analogy: Your brain is like a sponge. When a sponge is wet, it’s soft and flexible. When it’s dry, it gets hard and tough. Keep your "brain sponge" wet by drinking water!

Common Mistake to Avoid:

Many "Sports Drinks" or sodas have a lot of added sugar. While they look colorful, plain water is almost always the best choice for your body during physical activity!

5. Listening to Your Body

Your body is very smart! It sends you signals to tell you what it needs. Part of Active Living is learning to listen to these signals.

Hunger vs. Fullness

- Hunger: A rumbly tummy or feeling "cranky" usually means your engine is low on fuel.
- Fullness: Feeling satisfied and comfortable means you have had enough. You don't need to finish everything if your body says "I'm full!"

Mindful Eating

Try to eat slowly and enjoy the taste of your food. This gives your brain time to hear your stomach saying, "Thanks! I've had enough fuel now."

Quick Review:

Body Cues are the messages your body sends you, like "I'm hungry" or "I'm thirsty."

Summary: Your Active Living Checklist

To be the best "Active Liver" you can be, remember these simple points:
- Eat for Energy: Match your food to how much you move.
- Choose Variety: Get your Go, Grow, and Glow foods every day.
- Drink Water: Keep your engine cool and your brain sharp.
- Listen Close: Eat when you are hungry, and stop when you are full.

You are in charge of your health! Making small, healthy choices every day makes a huge difference in how you feel and play.
