Theme 1: Identity and Culture
Topic 1: Me, My Family and Friends — Relationships with Family and Friends
Welcome to your study notes for Relationships with Family and Friends! This topic is a cornerstone of your AQA GCSE Chinese (Mandarin) course. You will use this vocabulary and grammar across all four exam papers: Paper 1 (Listening), Paper 2 (Speaking), Paper 3 (Reading), and Paper 4 (Writing).
Don't worry if learning all the characters and tones feels overwhelming at first. We will break everything down into bite-sized steps with clear patterns, practical examples, and essential memory tips.
1. Essential Family Vocabulary
In Chinese culture, family titles are very specific. Unlike English, where "brother" can mean older or younger, Mandarin has distinct words depending on age and family side.
Immediate Family Members
• 家 (jiā) — Family / home
• 爸爸 (bàba) / 父亲 (fùqīn) — Dad / Father
• 妈妈 (māma) / 母亲 (mǔqīn) — Mum / Mother
• 父母 (fùmǔ) — Parents (combining fù from 父亲 and mǔ from 母亲)
• 哥哥 (gēge) — Older brother
• 弟弟 (dìdi) — Younger brother
• 姐姐 (jiějie) — Older sister
• 妹妹 (mèimei) — Younger sister
• 兄弟姐妹 (xiōngdì jiěmèi) — Siblings (literally: older brother, younger brother, older sister, younger sister)
• 儿子 (érzi) — Son
• 女儿 (nǚ'ér) — Daughter
• 孩子 (háizi) — Child / children
Grandparents (The Important Distinction!)
In the AQA exam, listening and reading texts frequently test whether you know which side of the family a grandparent comes from:
• Paternal Grandparents (Father's side):
— 爷爷 (yéye) — Paternal grandfather
— 奶奶 (nǎinai) — Paternal grandmother
• Maternal Grandparents (Mother's side):
— 外公 (wàigōng) — Maternal grandfather
— 外婆 (wàipó) — Maternal grandmother
Memory tip: The character 外 (wài) means "outside" or "maternal", signalling your mother's side of the family.
Key Takeaway for Family: Pay close attention to age order for siblings and the 外 (wài) prefix for maternal grandparents.
2. Friends, Partnerships and Relationship Terms
Here are the key terms you need to describe friendships, romantic relationships, and marital status:
• 朋友 (péngyou) — Friend
• 好朋友 (hǎo péngyou) — Good friend / best friend
• 男朋友 (nánpéngyou) — Boyfriend
• 女朋友 (nǚpéngyou) — Girlfriend
• 先生 (xiānsheng) — Husband / Mr
• 太太 (tàitai) — Wife / Mrs
• 结婚 (jiéhūn) — To get married / marriage
• 离婚 (líhūn) — To divorce
• 关系 (guānxì) — Relationship
Key Takeaway for Relationships: Notice how compound words build logically: 男 (male) + 朋友 (friend) = 男朋友 (boyfriend).
3. Describing People: Personality and Physical Appearance
To score top marks in your Speaking and Writing assessments, you must be able to describe what your family members and friends look like and what kind of people they are.
Physical Appearance
• 高 (gāo) — Tall
• 矮 (ǎi) — Short (in height)
• 胖 (pàng) — Fat / chubby
• 瘦 (shòu) — Thin / slim
• 漂亮 (piàoliang) — Pretty / beautiful
• 帅 (shuài) — Handsome
Personality and Character
• 友好 (yǒuhǎo) — Friendly
• 热情 (rèqíng) — Warm / enthusiastic
• 幽默 (yōumò) — Humorous / funny
• 聪明 (cōngming) — Clever / smart
• 严格 (yángé) — Strict
• 亲切 (qīnqiè) — Kind / caring
Key Takeaway for Descriptions: Combine personality and appearance words with intensifiers like 很 (hěn - very) or 非常 (fēicháng - extremely) to give richer, more detailed answers.
4. Core Grammar and Sentence Patterns
Rule 1: Counting Family Members vs Counting Friends (Measure Words)
In Chinese, you must use a measure word between a number and a noun.
• When counting family members in a household, use the special measure word 口 (kǒu):
Example: 我家有五口人。(Wǒ jiā yǒu wǔ kǒu rén. — There are five people in my family.)
• For friends, siblings, and people in general, use the standard measure word 个 (gè):
Example: 我有一个好朋友。(Wǒ yǒu yí gè hǎo péngyou. — I have one good friend.)
Rule 2: Describing People Without 是 (shì)
A classic mistake is translating English "is/are" directly as 是 (shì). In Mandarin, adjectives act as verbs on their own. You connect the subject to the adjective using intensifiers like 很 (hěn), 非常 (fēicháng), or 最 (zuì).
• Correct: 妈妈很亲切。(Māma hěn qīnqiè. — Mum is very kind.)
• Incorrect: 妈妈是亲切。
Rule 3: Doing Activities Together: 跟 / 和...一起 + Verb
To say you do something "with" someone, the "with someone" phrase must come before the verb:
Structure: Subject + 跟 (gēn) / 和 (hé) + Person + 一起 (yìqǐ) + Verb Phrase
• Example: 我常跟我朋友一起去买东西。(Wǒ cháng gēn wǒ péngyou yìqǐ qù mǎi dōngxi. — I often go shopping with my friend.)
• Example: 周末我和姐姐一起看电影。(Zhōumò wǒ hé jiějie yìqǐ kàn diànyǐng. — At the weekend, my older sister and I watch films together.)
Rule 4: Describing Attitudes and Relationships
Use 对 (duì - towards) to explain how someone treats you:
• Structure: Person A + 对 (duì) + Person B + 很好 / 严格
• Example: 爸爸对我很友好。(Bàba duì wǒ hěn yǒuhǎo. — Dad is very friendly towards me.)
• Example: 妈妈对我非常严格。(Māma duì wǒ fēicháng yángé. — Mum is extremely strict with me.)
To talk about the quality of your relationship or arguments:
• Example: 我和朋友的关系很好。(Wǒ hé péngyou de guānxì hěn hǎo. — The relationship between me and my friend is very good.)
• Example: 我和我哥哥常常吵架。(Wǒ hé wǒ gēge chángcháng chǎojià. — My older brother and I often argue.)
Rule 5: Making Comparisons: A 比 B + Adjective
Use 比 (bǐ) to compare two people:
• Structure: Person A + 比 (bǐ) + Person B + Adjective
• Example: 我弟弟比我高。(Wǒ dìdi bǐ wǒ gāo. — My younger brother is taller than me.)
• Example: 爸爸比妈妈幽默。(Bàba bǐ māma yōumò. — Dad is more humorous than Mum.)
Key Takeaway for Grammar: Remember the sentence formula: Who + with whom + together + do what. Never put the "with someone" phrase at the end of the sentence!
5. Common Pitfalls and Examiner-Reported Errors
Be aware of these frequent mistakes highlighted in examiner reports:
• Mixing up sibling ages: Double-check 哥哥 (gēge - older brother) vs 弟弟 (dìdi - younger brother) and 姐姐 (jiějie - older sister) vs 妹妹 (mèimei - younger sister).
• Using English word order for prepositions: Never write 我去电影院和我朋友. Always place the companion phrase before the verb: 我和我朋友去电影院.
• Inserting 是 (shì) before adjectives: Saying 我的朋友是很好 is grammatically wrong. Write 我的朋友很好.
• Wrong measure word for family size: Always write 我家有四口人, not 我家有四个朋友 when talking about household members.
• Character confusion in Paper 4 writing: Watch out for look-alike characters and radicals:
— 友 (yǒu - friend) vs 发 (fā - send/hair)
— 弟 (dì - younger brother) vs 第 (dì - prefix for ordinal numbers)
— 没 (méi - not have) vs 设 (shè - set up)
• Tone errors in Paper 2 speaking: Keep your tones distinct when saying family words. For example, 妈妈 (māma - 1st tone) sounds very different from 马 (mǎ - 3rd tone, horse) or 骂 (mà - 4th tone, to scold)!
6. Quick Revision Checklist
Before your exam, make sure you can confidently:
• List all immediate family members and both sets of paternal/maternal grandparents.
• Give 3 appearance adjectives and 3 personality adjectives in Mandarin.
• Write a sentence comparing two family members using 比 (bǐ).
• Describe an activity you do with a friend using the 跟/和...一起 + Verb structure.
• Explain your relationship with your parents using 对...好 / 严格.
