2. Sentence Patterns & Grammar Essentials

Don't worry if Mandarin grammar feels unfamiliar at first—following clear sentence formulas makes it much easier to build accurate sentences!

Rule 1: Time and Frequency Word Order

In English, we often put time words at the end of a sentence (e.g., "I use social media every day"). In Mandarin, time and frequency words must go before the verb or right at the start of the sentence:

Structure: Subject + Time/Frequency + Verb + Object

每天 (měi tiān) – Every day
常常 (cháng cháng) – Often
很少 (hěn shǎo) – Rarely / Seldom

Example:每天用手机上网。(wǒ měi tiān yòng shǒu jī shàng wǎng. – I use my mobile phone to go online every day.)

Rule 2: Expressing Completed Actions vs Ongoing Actions

正在 (zhèng zài) – In the middle of doing an action (present continuous).
Example:正在和网友聊天。(wǒ zhèng zài hé wǎng yǒu liáo tiān. – I am currently chatting with an internet friend.)
(le) – Indicates a completed action.
Example: 昨天我发了很多照片。(zuó tiān wǒ fā le hěn duō zhào piān. – Yesterday I posted/sent a lot of photos.)
(guò) – Indicates past experience ("have done before").
Example: 我写博客。(wǒ xiě guò bó kè. – I have written a blog before.)

Rule 3: Expressing Opinions and Interests

To reach higher mark bands, you need to justify your views, not just list facts.

觉得 (jué de) / 认为 (rèn wéi) – To think / To feel
对……有兴趣 (duì ... yǒu xìng qù) – To be interested in...

Example:社交媒体很有兴趣,因为很有意思。(wǒ duì shè jiāo méi tǐ hěn yǒu xìng qù, yīn wèi hěn yǒu yì si. – I am very interested in social media because it is very interesting.)

Key Takeaway: Never put time words at the end of a Chinese sentence. Always place them after the subject or at the very beginning!

Examiners love asking you to evaluate technology in both speaking and writing. Using balanced conjunctions shows great linguistic control.

Vocabulary for Evaluation

好处 (hǎo chu) – Advantage / Benefit
坏处 (huài chu) – Disadvantage / Drawback
方便 (fāng biàn) – Convenient
不安全 (bù ān quán) – Unsafe / Insecure

High-Scoring Connectives

不但……而且…… (bù dàn ... ér qiě ...) – Not only ... but also ...
一边……一边…… (yī biān ... yī biān ...) – Doing one thing while doing another...

Model Sentences for Revision

1. 虽然社交媒体很方便,但是有时候不安全。

Translation: Although social media is very convenient, it is sometimes unsafe.

3. 我喜欢一边上网,一边听音乐。
(wǒ xǐ huan yī biān shàng wǎng, yī biān tīng yīn yuè.)

4. Common Pitfalls and Examiner Tips

Here are key traps identified by examiners and how you can avoid them:

1. Confusing "发" (fā) and "收" (shōu)

Remember the direction of communication:
= Sending out (e.g., 发短信 send a text)
= Receiving in (e.g., 收到信息 receive a message)

2. Homophone Character Errors (Pinyin Interference)

When handwriting in Paper 4 (Writing), make sure not to confuse characters that share similar sounds:
• Do not write (wán - play) when you mean (wǎng - net/online in 上网).
• Do not mix up (kuài - piece/money) and (kuài - fast).

3. Missing Opinions and Justifications

In Speaking (Paper 2) and Writing (Paper 4), simply writing "I have a phone" will keep you in the lower mark bands. Always add an opinion and reason: "I think my phone is very convenient because I can chat with friends every day."

4. Script Rules for Paper 4

Remember that you must handwrite all responses in Chinese characters (both Simplified and Traditional characters are accepted by AQA). Pinyin typing is not permitted unless formal access arrangements are in place.
