N2 ポイント理解: Opinions, Reasons & the Art of the Buried Point

Six items, question-first — and at N2 the targets are almost entirely reasons and evaluations delivered in natural, hedged, workplace Japanese. The decoy-then-real-reason structure from N4/N3 persists, but the real reason now hides deeper: behind keigo, behind hedges, sometimes behind a speaker's self-correction. This chapter tunes the last edge of your selective-listening system.

1. The N2 Target Mix

TargetQuestion soundThe N2 twist
Reasonどうして/なぜ2-3 candidate reasons aired; the real one after 実は/というのは/それより
Evaluation〜についてどう言っていますかhedged verdicts: 悪くはないんですが…/期待したほどでは…
Problem何が問題だと言っていますかthe stated problem ≠ the surface complaint
Decision + reasonどうして〜することにしましたかcompeting factors weighed aloud; the DECIDING one wins

2. Hedge Decoding at Full Speed

N2 speakers judge without judging words. The decoder ring:

HedgeVerdict
悪くはないんですが、ちょっと…negative
期待したほどではなかったdisappointed
思ったより(ずっと)よかったpositively surprised
〜は〜で、いいんですけどねconcession before the real complaint
まあ、値段のわりにはfaint praise (for the price)
正直、微妙でしたpolitely bad
文句なしです/文句のつけようがないfully positive
〜さえなければ最高なんですがone flaw dominates — that flaw is the answer

The last row is an N2 darling: 「立地さえよければ…」names the deciding negative inside a compliment. When a question asks 何が不満か, the さえ-clause IS the answer.

3. Weighing Aloud: The Decision Items

女:新しいアパート、どうだった?
男:うーん、駅から近いのは魅力なんだけど、家賃がね…。今より2万も高いんだ。
女:じゃあ、やめるの?
男:それがね、会社への通勤時間が半分になるんだよ。毎日のことだから、結局そこが決め手で、借りることにした。
Q: 男の人はどうしてアパートを借りることにしましたか。→ 通勤時間が短くなるから

Factors aired: near station (+), rent (+2万, −), commute halved (+). The phrase 決め手 (deciding factor) crowns the winner explicitly — as do 結局, 何より, 一番は. Distractors are the other aired factors, verbatim. Pencil-tally +/− per factor and circle the crowned one.

4. Multi-Speaker Attribution

N2 dialogues let BOTH speakers hold opinions, and the question names its person. Pre-read the options tagging which speaker could hold each; while listening, prefix your notes: 男+駅近 / 男−家賃 / 女?. The wrong option is frequently the OTHER person's stated view — flawless Japanese, wrong mouth.

5. Formality Scenes (Unique-ish to N2)

  • Customer-service calls: the reason for a change/refusal hides behind apologies — 申し訳ございませんが、あいにく〜; the あいにく-clause carries the point.
  • Office feedback: ここはいいんだけど、この部分がもう少し… — the もう少し-clause is the requested fix (and the answer to 何を直しますか).
  • Announcements: reasons for delays/changes come after 〜のため (e.g. 車両点検のため) — the ため-phrase is liftable verbatim as the answer.

6. Strategy Recap

  • Question first: target type + WHOSE point.
  • Pre-read options; tag by speaker; find the contrast axis.
  • Track candidate reasons with +/−; crowns: 決め手・結局・何より・一番は. Cancellations: というのは実は…/それは問題ないんです.
  • Hedges are verdicts; さえ-clauses are answers; apologies precede the point.

Summary & Key Takeaways

  • N2 ポイント理解 = reasons and evaluations under hedges, at natural speed, across two opinionated speakers.
  • Decode hedges into verdicts; the concession's けど-tail holds the real position.
  • Decision items crown their winner (決め手/結局/何より) — tally factors, take the crowned one.
  • Attribution discipline: right content from the wrong speaker is a wrong answer.
