N2 課題理解: Business-Speed Task Tracking

Task comprehension at N2 (5 items) moves to full workplace realism: natural speed, keigo-wrapped instructions, and multi-step arrangements where priorities get re-ranked mid-conversation. The paper ledger from N3 remains your instrument; this chapter upgrades it for keigo instructions, delegation chains, and the どれから (which first?) question in earnest.

1. Instructions in Keigo Clothing

At N2, "do it" arrives dressed. Hear THROUGH the wrapping to the action item:

You hearIt means
〜ていただけますか/〜お願いできますかdo it
〜てもらってもいい?(casual boss)do it
〜ておいていただけると助かりますdo it (in advance)
恐れ入りますが、〜request incoming — attention!
〜は私のほうでやっておきますstruck from YOUR list
〜は結構です/〜には及びませんnot needed — cancel
〜次第、〜てくださいsequencing: right after A, do B
できれば今日中にdeadline (soft phrasing, hard meaning)

には及びません ("no need to go that far") is the elegant cancel — N2 loves it precisely because learners miss it. And 助かります-requests are REQUESTS: politeness is not optionality.

2. Priority Re-Ranking: The N2 Plot

The standard N2 script piles three tasks, then re-ranks them:

The re-ranking REASON (鈴木さんが3時に出かける) is often itself a distractor option — a reason is not a task.

3. The Signals, N2-Complete

  • Promote: 先に, 〜より先に, まず, 急ぎで, 〜次第すぐ.
  • Demote: あとでいい, 夕方でいい, 急がない, 来週に回す.
  • Cancel: もう〜た, 私のほうで, 結構です, には及びません, キャンセルになった.
  • Replace: やっぱり, じゃなくて, 〜に変更, それより.
  • Conditional tasks: もし〜なら/〜場合は — a branch! The question's premise (e.g., "it's raining") selects the branch; hold both until the question repeats.

4. Announcement-Style Items

Some 課題理解 items are one-way announcements (store, station, event staff briefing): the "conversation" is a monologue of procedures, and the question asks what the LISTENER (customer/attendee) must do. Method: the same ledger, but every instruction verb targets you — note especially 〜方は…てください patterns (「参加ご希望の方は受付にお越しください」) and the order words (最初に, その後, 最後に).

5. Strategy Recap

  • Preview options in the question gap; classify the contrast axis (order? item? person?).
  • Run the ledger; edit on every signal; the confirmation echo (では、〜から始めます) is the answer restated — trust it.
  • Reasons for re-ranking are not tasks; done things are not next-things; other people's tasks are not yours.
  • 5 items at speed — reset between items without post-mortems.

Summary & Key Takeaways

  • N2 課題理解 = keigo-wrapped, re-ranked task lists at natural speed.
  • Hear through politeness to action items: 助かります=do it, には及びません=cancel, 私のほうで=struck.
  • Priority verbs rule: 先に promotes, 〜でいい demotes, もう〜た cancels; the re-rank reason is a decoy option.
  • Announcements are one-way task lists aimed at you — same ledger, monologue form.
